Patients affected by buruli ulcers, West Africa, 2008. These are painless open wounds caused by infection with the bacteria Mycobacterium ulcerans. The mechanism of this infection is still not known with certainty. The bacteria produce a toxin that causes this skin damage. If the ulcers extend into muscle or bone, they can cause permanent disability. Treatment is with antibiotics, but surgery may be required for larger ulcers. Buruli ulcers occur mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, Australia and parts of South America.
