Hurricane Milton, 8-10 October 2024
Satellite imagery from 8 October 2024 to 10 October 2024 showing the evolution of Hurricane Milton. The storm formed on 5 October 2024, and rapidly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico by 7 October, after being classified as a Category 1 just one day earlier. This rapid intensification was fuelled by very high sea surface temperatures (approaching 31 degrees Celsius), high relative humidity, and low wind shear. On 8 October, Milton was downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane. With its wind speed, Milton became the strongest hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico since Hurricane Rita in 2005. In terms of pressure, it ranks as the fifth most intense hurricane on record in the Atlantic basin. Milton is also notable for being the second Category 5 hurricane of the season, following Hurricane Helene just two weeks earlier. Imagery obtained by the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 16 (GOES-16).
