FRANCE: WORKERS PROTEST AT FACTORY CLOSURE (V)
TAPE_NUMBER: EF00/0805 IN_TIME: 18:47:41 LENGTH: 01:02 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: French/Nat XFA VOICED BY: Susan Poizner French authorities have condemned the actions of angry workers who poured sulphuric acid into the gutters of a northeastern factory town as part of a labour dispute. The workers are angry at plans to close their textile factory in Givet, located in an economically depressed region of northeastern France. The protesters on Monday unleashed what is being described as a "small amount" - five-thousand litres - of the corrosive acid into a stream. Firefighters battled to stop the acid from leaking into the Meuse River, which feeds from the stream and flows into neighbouring Belgium. 0000 A workers protest outside the Cellatex textile factory in France which is bankrupt and slated for closure. Production here ceased on July 5 and these workers want the government to guarantee new jobs - or else. The crisis began a week ago, when the employees shut themselves in the building and threatened to blow it up. 0022 The factory, near the border with Belgium, contains toxic materials, including thousands of gallons of sulphuric acid and carbon disulphide - both become explosive on contact with air. 0033 "This factory is at the top of the scale on the chemical list register," a spokesman for the workers says. "A explosion could lead to a real catastrophe for Cellatex and for people nearby." 0047 Meanwhile, some damage has already been done after workers poured sulphuric acid into the gutters. French authorities say they've managed to prevent it from seeping into the Meuse River, which flows into neighboring Belgium.
