Lindbergh Makes Epic Flight to Paris May 1927. Lindbergh stands in front of the Spirit of St. Louis, along with his mother. The plane is pushed into position, fueled, and Lindbergh puts on his aviation suit. The plane taxis down the runway and eventually lifts off. The crowd waits in Paris, including American Ambassador Myron Herrick. Lindbergh poses next to his plane. The USS Memphis returns him, where his mother waits with the crowd. He is presented a Distinguished Flying Cross medal. The New York harbor is crowded with boats. Lindy’s plane flies over and the skyline of Manhattan is shown from the plane. He is picked up from a seaplane. The steamboats celebrate, followed by a tickertape parade. Lindbergh receives a Medal of Valor and takes a carriage ride to Central Park (:39-4:46). Rudolph Valentino Dies 1926. People stand outside Campbell Funeral Parlor in New York where Rudolph Valentino lies in state. Rudy is shown smiling in 1919, followed by his open casket. Helen Wills, tennis champion, shown in action on the courts. She returns from Europe, wearing a fur-trimmed coat and cloche hat (9:54-10:35). Swimmer Gertrude Ederle is shown exercising onboard a ship taking her to swim the English Channel. She prepares to enter the water after being coated in olive oil, lanolin, and Vaseline. She is shown swimming in the Channel and back on land (10:36-11:15). The Davis Cup doubles tennis players pose in front of the net and then are shown on the court (11:16-11:38). Sailors compete against professionals in a motorcycle hill climbing contest. A motorcyclists falls off his bike Others are shown gaining speed downhill and failing to make it up the other side.
