NNS-Health Care-IL:Durbin On Town Hall Disruptions
Friday, August 07, 2009
Dateline: Chicago, IL
Duration: 00:00:56.00
INFORMATION:
Congressional town hall meetings across the country to
discuss health care have turned into shouting matches this
week, and some Democrats say Republicans are instigating the
incidents. Democrats say it's their way of trying to
derail President Barack Obama's health care plan. Senator
Dick Durbin of Illinois told reporters Friday (8/7)
he thinks the health care industry is also behind the
disruptions. Durbin says the industry has been making a lot
of money over the years and doesn't want to see a change
in the way they do business.

VIDEO INFO:
SOT-Sen. Durbin: "The people, many of whom have been motivated
by web sites that instruct them on how to come and disrupt a
town meeting. I want to tell you, that doesn't do any good
for anybody. There's no real conversation, there's no
information, there's no dialogue. I would just say to the people
who are watching this, it's not about you, these folks are
there about you tube! That's why they're showing up!
They want to get a little clip on you tube in an effort to
disrupt a town meeting and to send the Congressmen
running for his car."
SOT-Sen. Durbin: "This is an organized effort put together.
It turns out, you can trace it back to the health insurance
industry that opposes health care reform because they're making
a ton of money on the current system. And they don't want
anybody to rock the boat."

Thousands who showed up for a health care event in Jefferson Parish,
Louisiana Monday (8-10) never made it inside.
The Republican-led event could not hold attendees anxious to get their
voices heard on health care overhauls inspired by President Obama.
As most lobbied outside for Congress to vote the measures down, people
inside the meeting cheered Senator David Vitter's assessment of the plan.
According to Vitter, employers could pay for the private plan, about
six-thousand dollars an employee, or drop it and pay the government
750-dollars a year to cover employees with a public plan.
The public plan would require employers to provide health insurance for
every employee. Vitter predicts most employers would go for the cheaper plan.
Most attendees were against government-run healthcare and voiced a list of
concerns. A lone, silent supporter of a national plan wore a pro-government
health care sign. There were also those who wanted to hear all sides of the
issue.
The fight ahead will likely be long and difficult for both sides.

Maryland Senator Ben Cardin had to shout his way through a town hall meeting
Monday evening (08/10), where angry constituents booed and jeered as the
Democratic senator tried to explain health care reform now working its way
through Congress.
More than two-hundred boisterous but peaceful protesters turned out before
the
meeting.
Protesters chanted and carried signs outside that read, "No socialized
medicine," "Public option is no option," "Health care can't wait," and "
Health
care is a right."
Back inside, Cardin was booed and jeered repeatedly throughout his 25-minute
presentation and the question-and-answer period. The crowd had to be asked
to
calm down to allow him to continue.
Cardin said how to pay for the bill has not yet been worked out, a comment
that prompted even more derision from the audience. Some shouted, "Taxes!"
and
others shouted, "Spend, Ben, spend!"
At one point, four police officers strolled down the two aisles of the
auditorium at Towson University and stood in front of the stage.
Cardin defended the health bills, saying they would provide more choice, and
that there would be more people, not fewer, with insurance.
One questioner asked for an example of anything the government had taken
over
and provided cheaper. Cardin cited the national parks system and Medicare.
That drew more boos and jeers.
Cardin said Medicare is cheaper than private insurance for the elderly,
adding, "your government runs it more effectively."
He said the bill would be neutral on abortion, and there would be no change
from current policy. But, Cardin had to stop speaking several times because
crowd was so loud.
Another questioner: "Yes or no?" on whether Cardin would enroll in whatever
bill passes. Cardin began to answer twice, and each time the questioner
asked
him "Yes or no?" prompting a deafening roar from the crowd.
Cardin finally said, "I turned 65 this year. I'm in a public plan. It's
called
Medicare."
The protests continued even after the meeting with people shouting on the
road
outside of the hall, waving flags and placards.

Senator Claire McCaskill was frequently interrupted during her town hall
meeting in Hillsboro, Missouri Tuesday (8/11).
The Missouri democrat was speaking on health care reform at the public forum
.
McCaskill admonished the crowd for being rude. At one point she told a woman
she couldn't hold up a sign. That spectator was then escorted out of the
room.
The senator is traveling across her home state to try to answer questions
and
dispel rumors about President Obama's national health care plan.
Similar events by lawmakers across the country have attracted protesters and
have developed into heated shouting matches between opposing sides of the
issue.

Oklahoma Congressman Tom Cole got another earful about health care reform at
a
packed town hall meeting in Moore on Tuesday (8/11).
The crowd appeared to be overwhelmingly against President Obama's plan to
overhaul health care. One man voiced his approval of reform and was quickly
booed. Others who spoke out against it were cheered.
Cole believes the bills Democrats are pushing through the House are not
putting enough focus on common sense ways to cut costs. He'd like to make
health care more affordable without the costly overhaul the president wants.
Obama also held a town hall meeting on Tuesday. He told a New Hampshire
crowd
that health care reform is needed because the status quo isn't working.

More opinions on the issue of a government run health care plan being
proposed
by President Obama brought out citizens in Portland, Oregon Tuesday (8-11-09

both in support and against the proposal.
Congressman David Wu of Oregon held his second town hall meeting, gathering

reform.
During the town hall, there were moments where passions flared up, but
overall
officials say the situation was very controlled.
One man did show up with a poster of President Obama with a mustache drawn

A man said President Obama is supporting genocide of Americans to keep

Congressman Wu took issue with the statement, calling it outrageous.
Most of the people at the hour long meeting brought up questions of how the
program would be paid for to whether illegal immigrants and abortions would

Sen. Arlen Specter faced jeers and taunts?along with a smattering of cheers
Wednesday (8/12) in State College, Pennsylvania during a town hall meeting
on
health care reform.
More than 400 people packed the ballroom on the Penn State University campus
.
Specter assured questioners that the country was not moving to socialism
should a health care reform bill be enacted. Specter reiterated his position
that a public option for care ought to be on the table in negotiations
between
the U-S House and U-S Senate.
Many Democrats, including President Barak Obama, support a public option
entity. Many Republicans and critics of reform are staunchly opposed to the
public option.
Town hall meetings with leaders across the country have become stormy
sessions, at times raising security concerns for elected representatives.
Specter said all sides of the health care debate should be heard, even those
thought to be disruptive. He added that those who willfully disrupt

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says he won't hold any town hall meetings about
healthcare reform. Instead he's talking to healthcare professionals.
On Wednesday (8/12), he was in Decatur to meet with doctors and patients. He
echoed what President Obama said on Tuesday (8/11). The health care the U-S
has now isn't working.
Durbin says his goal is to give all Americans the same health insurance as
members of Congress. He also wants everyone in the country to have some kind
of coverage. And he thinks that people should have the option of buying
their
own private plans.
But Durbin wasn't able to talk about specifics of a reform plan because

details have not been hammered out yet. The House has a bill but the Senate
doesn't.

Call it health care outrage. For the second time this week, Maryland
Senator
Ben Cardin has had to take on a rowdy crowd at a town hall meeting on health
care reform.
Residents in western Maryland were not holding anything back, letting
Senator
Cardin know exactly how they feel about President Obama's proposal.
This is the most Republican region of Maryland, and it was very clear early
on
at the meeting that conservatives dominated it. They gave Senator Cardin an
earful; some even called him a socialist.
Senator Cardin struggled to be heard at the meeting.
Police had to remove some of the rowdy attendees.
A major issue in the proposed reform bill is limiting medical malpractice.
But for some, there's simply no middle ground.
The meeting in Hagerstown was Cardin's last town hall meeting on health care
reform.

during Friday's meeting saying he wouldn't support a bill funding abortion

A standing room only but calm crowd debated health care reform in a town
hall
meeting Thursday night (8-13) at Roger's Park pavilion in Beaumont, Texas.
The forum was put on by the local TEA party, which is opposed to the reform.
It attracted more than 200 people, most of them also opposed to President
Barack Obama's plan.
The tone of this meeting was set at the start when the crowd, as a whole,
voiced their opinion that health care is a privilege, not a right.
The CEO of Baptist Hospital in Orange presented basic details of the
American
Affordable Health Care Choices Act, then touched on issues he said are most
common across the country. Those concerns include access to health services,
along with the quality and cost of those services. Republican Congressman
Ted
Poe also spoke to the crowd about his problems with the plan.
Attendees then expressed personal concerns and asked questions about the
bill.
Both supporters and opponents say their beliefs were strengthened by the
meeting.

SUGGESTED INTRO: TAKING HIS CASE FOR HEALTH CARE REFORM TO CONSERVATIVE
MONTANA, PRESIDENT OBAMA ADDRESSED A TOWN HALL MEETING IN THE TOWN OF
BELGRADE, FRIDAY. THE PRESIDENT ACKNOWLEDGED THE HEATED AND EMOTIONAL
DEBATE IN TOWN HALL MEETINGS ACROSS THE COUNTRY, BUT SAID HE STILL BELIEVES
A HEALTH REFORM BILL WILL PASS.
SCRIPT:
VERBATIM:
I'm thrilled to have the chance to spend some time with the folks in this
beautiful state. After all, here in Montana, you've got bears and moose and
elk. Back in Washington, we mostly see a lot of bull. So this is a nice
change of pace. ///The fact is, health care touches all of our lives in a
profound way. So it is only natural that this debate is an emotional one.
And I know there's been a lot of attention paid to some of the town hall
meetings that are going on around the country - especially those where
tempers have flared. You know how TV loves a ruckus.
But what you haven't seen - and what makes me proud - are the many
constructive meetings going on all over the country. Earlier this week, I
held a town hall in New Hampshire. A few thousand people showed up. Some
were big supporters of health insurance reform. Some had concerns and
questions. And some were downright skeptical. But I was glad to see that
people weren't there to shout. They were there to listen. And I think that
reflects the American people far more than what we've seen covered on
television these past few days. And I thank you for coming here today in
that spirit.///The fact is, we are closer to achieving health insurance
reform than we have ever been in history. We have the American Nurses
Association and the American Medical Association on board - because America'
s doctors and nurses know how badly we need reform. We have broad agreement
in Congress on about 80 percent of what we're trying to achieve. And we have
an agreement from the drug companies to make prescription drugs more
affordable for seniors. The AARP supports this policy, and agrees with us
that reform must happen this year.
Because we are getting close, the fight is getting fierce. The history is
clear: every time we are in sight of health insurance reform, the special
interests fight back with everything they've got. They use their influence.
They run their ads. They use their political allies to scare the American
people.
Well, we cannot let them do it again. Not this time. Because for all the
scare tactics out there, what is truly scary - what is truly risky - is if
we do nothing.

A health care "Q and A" with Independent Senator Bernie Sanders sparked a
heated confrontation in central Vermont Saturday (08/15).
Sanders took questions inside and outside from among more than 600 people at
the state's first town hall meeting on the topic.
One angry resident held up a copy of the huge health care bill proposal
being
debated in congress and demanded it be written in a shorter simpler form
everyone could understand.
Sanders explained to residents upset over the so called "death panel" issue
concerning end of life counseling, that no such measure was ever in any of
the
bills being debated.
Others were worried the government would take away their freedom to choose

it
will simply cost the nation too much.
Those who support reform say they want affordable health care coverage for

U.S. Secretary of Veteran's Affairs
VIDEO INFO:
SOT-US Sec: "We're looking at how to increase access to our services and
benefits for all veterans. How to raise the quality of the services we
provide, especially in health care. And also, my responsibility, how to
control costs so that veterans can take advantage of our services and
benefits. To do this, it's that balancing of those three requirements - but
doing this will make V-A a model for governance. It'll be a different
organization than the one that exists today. Five years from now, we want to
be the provider of choice for veterans - and insurance and education and
health care, home loans, counseling, and employment. And to achieve that
kind
of status with veterans, we must make it easier for them to understand their
entitlements. And then make it much simpler for them to access their
benefits."

Northwest Louisiana congressman John Fleming says although he's glad to see
the Obama administration is considering dumping "public option", the fight
isn't over.
The congressman told seniors at "The Glen" retirement facility in Shreveport
that he wants to see a bill that says that before declaring victory.
Fleming believes the public outcry has helped dissuade the president.
