The Republican-led event could not hold attendees anxious to get their voices heard on health care overhauls inspired by President Obama. As most lobbied outside for Congress to vote the measures down, people inside the meeting cheered Senator David Vitter's assessment of the plan. According to Vitter, employers could pay for the private plan, about six-thousand dollars an employee, or drop it and pay the government 750-dollars a year to cover employees with a public plan. The public plan would require employers to provide health insurance for every employee. Vitter predicts most employers would go for the cheaper plan. Most attendees were against government-run healthcare and voiced a list of concerns. A lone, silent supporter of a national plan wore a pro-government health care sign. There were also those who wanted to hear all sides of the issue. The fight ahead will likely be long and difficult for both sides. Maryland Senator Ben Cardin had to shout his way through a town hall meeting Monday evening (08/10), where angry constituents booed and jeered as the Democratic senator tried to explain health care reform now working its way through Congress. More than two-hundred boisterous but peaceful protesters turned out before the meeting. Protesters chanted and carried signs outside that read, "No socialized medicine," "Public option is no option," "Health care can't wait," and " Health care is a right." Back inside, Cardin was booed and jeered repeatedly throughout his 25-minute presentation and the question-and-answer period. The crowd had to be asked to calm down to allow him to continue. Cardin said how to pay for the bill has not yet been worked out, a comment that prompted even more derision from the audience. Some shouted, "Taxes!" and others shouted, "Spend, Ben, spend!" At one point, four police officers strolled down the two aisles of the auditorium at Towson University and stood in front of the stage. Cardin defended the health bills, saying they would provide more choice, and that there would be more people, not fewer, with insurance. One questioner asked for an example of anything the government had taken over and provided cheaper. Cardin cited the national parks system and Medicare. That drew more boos and jeers. Cardin said Medicare is cheaper than private insurance for the elderly, adding, "your government runs it more effectively." He said the bill would be neutral on abortion, and there would be no change from current policy. But, Cardin had to stop speaking several times because crowd was so loud. Another questioner: "Yes or no?" on whether Cardin would enroll in whatever bill passes. Cardin began to answer twice, and each time the questioner asked him "Yes or no?" prompting a deafening roar from the crowd. Cardin finally said, "I turned 65 this year. I'm in a public plan. It's called Medicare." The protests continued even after the meeting with people shouting on the road outside of the hall, waving flags and placards. The forum was put on by the local TEA party, which is opposed to the reform. It attracted more than 200 people, most of them also opposed to President Barack Obama's plan. The tone of this meeting was set at the start when the crowd, as a whole, voiced their opinion that health care is a privilege, not a right. The CEO of Baptist Hospital in Orange presented basic details of the American Affordable Health Care Choices Act, then touched on issues he said are most common across the country. Those concerns include access to health services, along with the quality and cost of those services. Republican Congressman Ted Poe also spoke to the crowd about his problems with the plan. Attendees then expressed personal concerns and asked questions about the bill. Both supporters and opponents say their beliefs were strengthened by the meeting. SCRIPT: VERBATIM: I'm thrilled to have the chance to spend some time with the folks in this beautiful state. After all, here in Montana, you've got bears and moose and elk. Back in Washington, we mostly see a lot of bull. So this is a nice change of pace. ///The fact is, health care touches all of our lives in a profound way. So it is only natural that this debate is an emotional one. And I know there's been a lot of attention paid to some of the town hall meetings that are going on around the country - especially those where tempers have flared. You know how TV loves a ruckus. But what you haven't seen - and what makes me proud - are the many constructive meetings going on all over the country. Earlier this week, I held a town hall in New Hampshire. A few thousand people showed up. Some were big supporters of health insurance reform. Some had concerns and questions. And some were downright skeptical. But I was glad to see that people weren't there to shout. They were there to listen. And I think that reflects the American people far more than what we've seen covered on television these past few days. And I thank you for coming here today in that spirit.///The fact is, we are closer to achieving health insurance reform than we have ever been in history. We have the American Nurses Association and the American Medical Association on board - because America' s doctors and nurses know how badly we need reform. We have broad agreement in Congress on about 80 percent of what we're trying to achieve. And we have an agreement from the drug companies to make prescription drugs more affordable for seniors. The AARP supports this policy, and agrees with us that reform must happen this year. Because we are getting close, the fight is getting fierce. The history is clear: every time we are in sight of health insurance reform, the special interests fight back with everything they've got. They use their influence. They run their ads. They use their political allies to scare the American people. Well, we cannot let them do it again. Not this time. Because for all the scare tactics out there, what is truly scary - what is truly risky - is if we do nothing. Eric Shinseki U.S. Secretary of Veteran's Affairs VIDEO INFO: SOT-US Sec: "We're looking at how to increase access to our services and benefits for all veterans. How to raise the quality of the services we provide, especially in health care. And also, my responsibility, how to control costs so that veterans can take advantage of our services and benefits. To do this, it's that balancing of those three requirements - but doing this will make V-A a model for governance. It'll be a different organization than the one that exists today. Five years from now, we want to be the provider of choice for veterans - and insurance and education and health care, home loans, counseling, and employment. And to achieve that kind of status with veterans, we must make it easier for them to understand their entitlements. And then make it much simpler for them to access their benefits." 08/17/2009 11:21:59 **************************************************************************** 44. 02:15:20 NNS-Health Care-LA:Rep Fleming Town Hall Monday, August 17, 2009 Slug: Health Care-LA Story: Rep Fleming Town Hall Dateline: Shreveport, LA Source: KTBS Network: ABC Embargo: KSLA, KMSS Producer: MMondello Restriction: Duration: 00:00:31.00 Created On: 08/17/09 17:26:16 Topic: Legislation / Laws, Politics / Politicians Region: Southwest Format: SILENT .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
