GANDHI REPORTEDLY HAD JUST GOTTEN OUT OF HIS CAR IN THE TOWN OF SRIPERUMBUDUR, WHEN THE BOMB EXPLODED. MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE WERE ALSO KILLED. GANDHI WAS 45 YEARS OLD. TODAY IN WASHINGTON, PRESIDENT BUSH COMMENTED ABOUT GANDHI'S DEATH BY DENOUNCING THE VIOLENCE IN THE WORLD. THE PRESIDENT SAID HE MOURNS THE LOSS ON A PERSONAL BASIS, AND ADDED THAT GHANDI'S DEATH IS A TRAGEDY BECAUSE OF HIS CONTRIBUTION TO INTERNATIONAL ORDER AND DECENCY. CONGRESS TODAY ALSO REACTED TO GHANDI'S ASSASSINATION BY HOLDING A MOMENT OF SILENCE. REPRESENTATIVE STEPHEN SOLARZ ALSO DENOUNCED THE VIOLENCE IN INDIA, ONE OF THE LARGEST DEMOCRACIES IN THE WORLD.
