A LITTLE TRAINING...GOES A LONG WAY
" 'S'no use," they told Jack Buchanan ("Battling Butler") You'll have to train... and here's someone to help you." L/S of a boxer shadow boxing beside a punch ball. Jack Buchanan comes into shot wearing a shiny dressing gown and the boxer "accidentally" hits him. He falls backwards and is caught by his dresser. His dresser tries to persuade him to spar with the boxer. They shake hands and lots of funny business ensues with Jack pretending that his hand has been crushed. The dresser tries to take Jack's dressing gown off but each time a shoulder comes down, Jack puts it on again. The boxer meanwhile is hitting the punch ball. "It's only our Joe" they urged. "He won't hurt you... not to speak about. Time!"

The boxer and Jack sit on chairs, the dresser plays referee. The boxer and Jack stand up and a fight ensues. Jack is pretty pathetic. C/U of Jack getting punched in the face. He gets a bit "punch drunk". More slapstick stuff. Jack distracts the boxer's attention by pointing at something then hits him. "Next round!" shouted Jack's assistant. "Hurry up - I'll find your ear afterwards...don't fuss about trifles...Joe's waiting." Strange sequence which uses film superimposition to trick effect. A ghostly boxer moves around and Jack has been shrunk to half his real size. "Trifles!" thought Jack after he had distinctly seen several forty-foot Joes over the way..."Well, here goes." The two spar. Jack doesn't look too bad this time. They shake hands at the end.

Issue number unknown - was probably a Pathe Pictorial item.

Note: Battling Butler was a C.B. Cochran presentation at the Oxford Theatre in 1922.

16mm safety print exists.

Clip video "Foolish" Ashanti ASHANTI GIVEN KEY TO HOME TOWN The 21 year old singing sensation, Ashanti came home on Friday to Glen Cove, New York to be honoured with the key to the city and sign autographs of her new album CD, 'Ashanti.' It is a triumphant return for several reasons. The star has been on an amazing roll with chart topping duets over the last few months, first with Ja Rule and his hit, 'Always on Time.' Her success with that song equalled, if not topped with her duet with Fat Joe and his hit, 'What's Luv.' Her first single alone, 'Foolish' also topped the charts - topping off the amazing feat of Ashanti's first three chart entries all hitting number one in America. The only other musical act to achieve that success on the charts was the Beatles back in the mid-1960's. If that was not enough, her recently released solo CD, 'Ashanti' debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with sales of over 503,000 in the first week. That makes her CD the biggest selling R&B release of all time, even surpassing Lauren Hill's "The Miseducation of Lauren Hill". Ashanti may only be 21 but she set out on the road to stardom when she was much younger. She began singing with her church choir at just 6 years old. Her parents hoped she would grow up to become a dancer but when Ashanti explains when she was 14 her voice caught her mother's attention. "I was downstairs, doing chores, vacuuming and my mom was like no television, no radio, just do what you have to do, so then she comes flying down the steps yelling at me, I thought I told you no radio and I'm like mom that was me singing and she said what let me hear that again so I actually sang "Reminisce" by Mary J. Blige and after that we started doing local talent shows, shopping a deal, got a deal at 14 with Jive Records." The Jive Records deal did not lead to success for Ashanti, and neither did a second record contract a few years later. But her recent deal with Murder Inc. Records has more than made up for the slow start. The owner of Murder Inc., Irv Gotti has personally managed her career and can be easily be credited with much of her success. He paired her with Ja Rule and Fat Joe to slowly introduce to her a public hungry for young talent. Ashanti believes that "What we did, Irv Gotti, Murder Inc. Records, Ja Rule, I believe what we did is we kind of shifted R&B, we changed it a little bit, a nice fresh look right now, lyrically and with the beats that they are coming up with, I think we're edging a little bit." Ashanti has been writing music for a number of years now, even helping Jennifer Lopez out. "I wrote a song for her and I also referenced, "I'm Real" for her and they left my background vocals on the record." When asked, "And people, they say, you know, are you the ghost voice for her? Have you heard that?" Ashanti said, "Yes, I heard that but I referenced the record for her which is done a lot in the music industry and they left my background vocals on there so." The star laughed off a more direct question. "And that's the end of it, you're not the ghost voice are you?" Ashanti said "I'm not the ghost voice of J-Lo." Ashanti has been busy making a name for herself creating some of the most memorable music in years. Her next release is the follow up single to 'Foolish' entitled, 'Happy,'. Ashanti had been working on the track's music video all day, before her appearance outside the Roosevelt Field Mall. Photographers 6. Presser 7. Cameramen 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Richard Armitage, US Deputy Secretary of State: "Now I suppose there are still some in this country as well as around the region who believe that a self-confident Japan is something to fear. Those fears are ghosts of the past, they have no foundation in the present. Indeed, I see that the debate within Japan about changing the constitution is now picking up speed without changing the unique character of this country." APTN 16 January 2004 9. Various shots of farewell ceremony for Air Self Defense Force going to Iraq STORYLINE: Japan's dispatch of military forces on a humanitarian mission to Iraq is a sign of Tokyo's growing global leadership, US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said on Monday. Armitage, in Japan for a two-day visit as part of a tour of Asia, said the dispatch was earning Japan respect that it wouldn't have received by simply contributing money to Iraqi reconstruction. "Japan has not been caught standing still," Armitage said in a speech before the Japan National Press Club. "Japan is putting its skillful hands on the tiller of the international community." The deputy secretary dismissed the notion that the United States pressured Japan into contributing soldiers to the Iraq reconstruction effort, saying Japan decided to send the mission based on its own national interests. Armitage did say, however, that Japan's Iraqi mission was increasing its military cooperation with the United States. Earlier, Armitage met Japan's defense chief after stops in Mongolia and China, where he expressed hope that a new round of talks on North Korea's nuclear program could start soon. The Defense Agency refused to immediately disclose details of Defense Agency Director Shigeru Ishiba's discussions with Armitage, but North Korea and Iraq were on the agenda. Armitage's visit came as Japan is launching its first military mission in a combat zone since World War II. The government was sending about one-thousand military personnel to southern Iraq to purify water and carry out other humanitarian, noncombat duties. Japan's mission to Iraq is being hotly debated in Japan because of concerns the soldiers could be the target of insurgent attacks, and many also argue that the dispatch violates Japan's pacifist constitution.

The performances by a great cast led by VAL KILMER were all singled out for praise but the material was just too bleak for most. The movie is finally about to open in the United States. A coming-of-age story with some twists: almost every adult seems to be lined up against young Joe (NOAH FLEISS), who finds little other solace in the world. Almost every adult in the film fails him. One of Joe's first lasting impressions comes from being humiliated in front of his class by the teacher for trying to hide the fact that his father (VAL KILMER) was the school janitor. Five years later, Joe is still ashamed of his father, but now it's for being an abusive, unemployed alcoholic. Set in the 1970s, it tells the story of a kid who feels the weight of the world on his shoulders. Joe is a victim of good intentions gone wrong. Forced to work illegally as a dishwasher in a restaurant, he has no qualms about stealing from the till to repair other parts of his broken life, including paying off his dad's debts and replacing his mom's album collection, destroyed in his father's drunken rage. Joe eventually gets caught and is sentenced to six months in juvenile prison. He has one day of freedom and sadly spends it playing alone. It's not until he says good-bye to his family that they finally begin to realize what he has sacrificed for them. The cast also includes ETHAN HAWKE, KAREN YOUNG, JOHN LEGUIZAMO and MAX LIGOSH. Val Kilmer has previously starred in The Ghost and The Darkness, Top Gun and The Doors. Karen Young appeared opposite Jeff Bridges in Starman and opposite Harrison Ford in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ethan Hawke is best known for Before Sunrise, Alive and Dead Poet's Society and John Leguizamo appeared in Romeo and Julliet, Carlito's Way and To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar. Director, Frank Whaley, is best known for his acting roles in Field of Dreams, Born of the Fourth of July, Pulp Fiction and Broken Arrow.
