Other hikers around us, you know, had the same experience when we asked them, like, did you know there was going to be a flash flood? And they said, 'well, no, we were all expecting, like, light showers.' So we took shelter in a cove. We saw Native American man on horses. He was just rushing past, and he shouted at us, 'higher ground, higher ground.' We heard the panic in his voice, and we knew that, okay, we need to seek higher ground. What was going on in your mind? Just one thing that we just need to get out of here. There was total carnage. There was just like water all around us at that point, because we were in the valley, we were near the village, and mind you, like, you know, this was just like a half a mile distance, and it took us, like three hours to cross that. They sent Blackhawks and they airlifted us out. but it was quite a chaos there, like the way the flights were being managed, but when the Black Hawks came, we knew, you know, we'd be, we'd be evacuated out of here soon. We were lucky that we were at that point where we could find higher ground. Had we been, I don't know, two minutes from where we were, either forward or back. I don't know if you've been that lucky."
\n
--TAG--
\n
33-YEAR-OLD HIKER CHENOA NICKERSON DID NOT SURVIVE THE RUSHING WATER.
\n
HER BODY WAS DISCOVERED THREE DAYS LATER.
\n
HER HUSBAND WAS AMONG THOSE RESCUED.
\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n
NORTH CAROLINA NATIONAL PARK ARIZONA WEATHER
