HAIL STORM - STONES DAMAGE CARS AND CROPS (aka FREAK STORM - COLORADO, USA) (LNER)
Titles read: "HAIL STORM - STONES DAMAGE CARS AND CROPS".

Colorado, United States of America.

Several shots of cars driving along what looks like a snowy road near Colorado Springs after a severe hail storm. The 'snow' is actually the hail stones - a man picks up a handful to show to a person in a car - they look like new potatoes. A woman and a small girl run their hands through the hail ice on the ground. The same woman picks up leaves in a field that were knocked off trees in the storm. She runs her hands over plants in a garden to show how crops were flattened by the hail stones.

TO GREENLAND'S ICY MOUNTAINS NO. 2
Newfoundland, Canada. Introductory intertitle reads: "Come with us on the good ship 'Morrissey', in company with Capt. 'Bob' Bartlett (who accompanied Peary to the Pole) on perilous journey to Arctic Regions, calling first at Newfoundland."

Various shots on board the "Morrissey" - view of another ship (or possibly the "Morrissey" viewed from another boat), men (and a woman?) standing on deck as the ship approaches shore. Crowds wait on the quayside.

Crazy Bob Bartlett speaks to camera whilst hanging on to some of the ship's rigging. He announces they have arrived from New York and he has chosen this little port as a stopping off place as he and his crew hail from there. It is Captain Bob Bartlett's birthplace. He does name the port but I am unable to hear the name clearly - I think it begins with B.

Aerial shot of the port in Newfoundland showing the Morrissey at the government wharf. Various shots of the port, Bartlett's family home and local people on the quayside. The ship is loaded up with supplies then leaves port headed for Reykjavik, Iceland. M/S of a family watching the boat depart, father looks through a telescope.

Shots of the ship in high winds. Great shot of a man climbing the rigging filmed from the crow's nest. Waves crash onto the deck - it looks pretty rough. Captain Bartlett gives a passionate account on the soundtrack of the crew's valiant efforts to sail the boat in high seas. Ends with title card: "Another Instalment Next Week."

Note: perf damage on neg - given to Julian for repair 18/10/1999
North America precipitable water, 2023-2024
Map showing total precipitable water (TPW) in the atmosphere over North America and the Pacific from 2022-2023. TPW is the amount of water that can be obtained from the surface to the top of the atmosphere, if all of the water and water vapour were condensed to liquid. It is measured in millimeters, shown on a scale from light blue (10mm) to green (70mm). Atmospheric rivers can be seen as swirls of blue and green branching from oceans over land which bring concentrated water vapour with them. One example is the Pineapple Express which can be seen fluctuating over the north west coast of the USA. This brought severe storms to California in late January and early February 2024, causing flooding, landslides, record rainfall and power outages. This map uses data from the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) on the Suomi NPP satellite.
