NEW INFORMATION OBTAINED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT THAT HAITIANS ARE BEING POLITICALLY PERSECUTED IN HAITI HAS RESULTED IN AN INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF REFUGEES GRANTED HEARINGS FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM, A REPORT SAID TUESDAY. IMMIGRATION AND NATURALIZATION SERVICE OFFICIALS BY MONDAY HAD DEEMED THAT 757 OF THE 4,593 HAITIANS INTERVIEWED AT THE U.S. NAVAL BASE IN GUANTANAMO, CUBA, HAD POTENTIAL CLAIMS FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM AND WILL BE GIVEN HEARINGS IN MIAMI, THE MIAMI HERALD REPORTED. DURING THE FIRST 10 YEARS OF THE U.S. INTERDICTION PROGRAM ONLY 28 OUT OF 23,000 REFUGEES WERE ALLOWED TO COME TO MIAMI AND ASK FOR POLITICAL ASYLUM. LAST WEEK ONLY 210 OF THE NEWEST REFUGEES HAD BEEN DEEMED AS HAVING A POTENTIAL CLAIM.
