Approximatley 300 Hatian refugees were picked by the U.S. Coast Guard on their way to the United States today. The Coast Guard has begun to transfer the refugees from the boat to the cutter as officials believe that the Hatians are migrant workers. Immigration officials plan to send the 300 migrants back to their country. The Coast Guard located the boat southeast of Islamorada, Florida this afternoon.END

More than 400 Haitian refugees who were intercepted at sea are being taken ashore in south Florida where they are expected to have the opportunity to apply for political asylum. The Haitians arrived on an overloaded 65-foot freighter and were transferred to the Coast Guard cutter Mohawk. An anonymous official in the Clinton Administration says this is not a change in U-S policy on Haiti. The official says it is a "special case" because the Haitians were already so close to Florida when the Coast Guard stopped them.
