Animation showing Mars through the Noachian period (4.1-3.7 billion years ago), the Hesperian period (3.7-2.9 million years ago) and the Amazonian period (2.9 million years ago to present). The Noachian was characterised by high rates of meteorite impacts and volcanism. There was surface water and an atmosphere that was more substantial than at present, that warmed the planet. During the Hesperian there was still considerable volcanic activity, but the rate of impacts was much lower. The planet cooled and water was stored as ice, that was occasionally heated by volcanic activity or impacts leading to catastrophic flooding that carved deep canyons into the surface. The Amazonian is a cold dry period, with low rates of impacts and geological change and a very thin atmosphere.
