The 90's, episode 401: ""TAKING CHANCES"
01:36 ""Bungee Jump"" by Patrick Creadon and Randy Jaffe. Patrick Creadon prepares to bungee jump from a crane. he has a camera taped to his hand to capture the moment in all its glory. ""It's not that dangerous, is it?"" Pat asks. ""You're gonna be just fine,"" replies the jumping aid? And he is, despite a slight ""drunk"" feeling. 07:16 ""Lilly Barry"" by Skip Blumberg. Lilly Barry, a blind woman, talks about the perils of negotiating New York's streets. She says the best way a sighted person can help her is to ""just ask me if I need assistance."" 08:56 ""Lane Sarasohn"" by Nancy Cain. Lane Sarasohn, a lottery player, picks the following numbers: years he has lived in home, his daughter's age, his son's age, years married, wife's age and his age. He partakes in this ritual as ""insurance against a lifetime of self incrimination."" Nancy asks, ""Is it taking a chance to buy it or not to buy it?"" ""It'd be courting disaster not to buy it,"" he replies. 10:03 ""Visa Lottery"" by Nancy Cain, Eddie Becker, Miguel Kohan and Fabian Wagmister. A look at the chaos surrounding the visa lottery. Attorney Vera A. Weisz helps describe how the lottery works. A post office box in Arlington, Virginia, handles the millions of applications, which they accept for one week. Of the 19 million applications received, 40,000 will get a permanent visa, 16,000 of these must be of Irish descent... Applicants discuss their strategies. Sending in 400 applications is not uncommon. Eddie Becker encounters an Argentinean camera crew. They say ""The 90's"" is one of their favorite channels. Eddie suggests that they submit a tape. They happened to have shot tape of the riot that ensued at the post office the previous night, which is shown here. The masses surge toward the mail bins, their future determined by the bin they get their application in? A screen roll indicates that both the Senate and the House are working on an improved process. Meanwhile, the US Post Office grossed $5.51 million from this year's lottery. 17:47 ""We Play For Tips"" by Esti Galili Marpet. On the streets in New Orleans, Doreen's Jazz Band belts out the classic ""Down in New Orleans."" 18:46 ""72 Stories Up"" by Nancy Cain and Hector Garcia. A window washer cleans pollution's residue off a Los Angeles skyscraper. On the smog, he says, ""It's kind of unsightly, but it's also home."" 29:05 ""Tovey Halleck"" by Skip Blumberg. In New York: Skip Blumberg ""burns some tape"" on his way to see Tovey Halleck, an artist. ""I guess every time I go out shooting I'm taking a chance. Who knows what I'm going to find?"" ponders Skip. Tovey takes Skip to his ""studio,"" an outdoor sculpture/shed, where he forges iron into art. Skip asks him if he was taking a chance by his career choice. ""I think some people aren't cut out for it. Some people have to learn in a hands-on way,"" he replies. ""From the outside looking in, some people would say you're taking a chance,"" says Skip. 34:22 ""Fire Dance"" by Judith Binder. In Bali, Indonesia, natives chant around a fire. 35:25 More from ""Lane Sarasohn"". Lane Sarasohn, the lottery player, says, ""I saw a guy on a PBS documentary who said, 'Look, this is America. You can win the lottery and tomorrow be a millionaire.' That's not the American Dream. The American Dream is a house, a car, two kids and a dog. Now the American Dream is never having to worry about money again."" 41:46 ""Pat Arbor"" by Tom Weinberg and Patrick Creadon. Pat Arbor, a soybean trader at the Chicago Board of Trade, says, ""The risks we underwrite are different than the risks of a bingo parlor or Las Vegas. You don't have to turn a card, you don't have to roll a dice. The farmer, however, does have to plant the grain, because we have to eat. As soon as the farmer plants the grain a risk is created. All we do at the Chicago Board is underwrite that risk. We do not create that risk, the risk is already created."" 42:37 ""From the Horses Mouth"" by Jay April. A trip to the race track yields a collection of gamblers talking about the topic they know best. ""What's the biggest chance you ever took in life?"" asks Jay. The man responds, ""Getting married."" 49:42 ""John Schuchardt"" by Andrew Jones. John Schuchardt, a former captain of the US Marine Corps, recounts his story of speaking up against the Gulf War while President Bush attended church in Kennebunkport, Maine. ""We understand the church to be the place where urgent moral concerns belong and ought to be addressed... I stood up and said, ""I have a concern... We must think of the 18 million people of Iraq... We must think of what it is to be bombed by 2000 planes a day'... Someone shouted for me to sit down and the congregation rose up to sing 'God Bless America' to drown out my voice. I continued, 'I will speak for those who are suffering. Before we sing the Lord's Prayer I have a word' and it was for that statement that I was assaulted by the chief of police. I was expelled from the church. I lifted my voice and spoke, 'I am the voice of the voiceless. Stop the bombing. Stop the massacre' I was charged with disorderly conduct. They used the law as a weapon. They felt their purpose was to prohibit anyone from talking in front of the Commander-in-Chief."" Footage of Schuchardt being dragged away is also included.

50594a RAYTHEON HAWK SURFACE TO AIR MISSILE SYSTEM
Dating from the early era of the Hawk Missile system, this promotional film details the capabilities of the surface-to-air missile, showing it destroying a series of target drones including targets flying at low level. At 1:00, the narrator describes the components of the Hawk system which include an Acquisition Group, a Guidance Group, and three launchers and nine missiles.

The Raytheon MIM-23 Hawk (standing for Homing All the Way Killer) is a U.S. medium-range surface-to-air missile. It was designed to be a much more mobile counterpart to the MIM-14 Nike Hercules, trading off range and altitude capability for a much smaller size and weight. Its low-level performance was greatly improved over Nike through the adoption of new radars and a continuous wave semi-active radar homing guidance system.

Hawk was originally intended to attack aircraft, especially those flying at medium and low altitudes. It entered service with the Army in this role in 1959. In 1971 it underwent a major improvement program as the Improved Hawk, or I-Hawk, which made several improvements to the missile and replaced all of the radar systems with new models. Improvements continued throughout the next twenty years, adding improved ECCM, a potential home-on-jam feature, and in 1995, a new warhead that made it capable against short-range tactical missiles. Jane's reported that the original system's single shot kill probability was 0.56; I-Hawk improved this to 0.85.

Hawk was superseded by the MIM-104 Patriot in US Army service by 1994. The last US user was the US Marine Corps, who used theirs until 2002 when they were replaced with the man-portable short-range FIM-92 Stinger. The missile was also produced outside the US in Western Europe, Japan and Iran. Although the U.S. never used the Hawk in combat, it has been employed numerous times by other nations. Approximately 40,000 of the missiles were produced.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! #1 Conference April 28 - Jay Garner, Tom Cross and others regarding reconstruction of Iraq
COLOR SYNC Conference in Iraq held April 28, 2003 to Iraqi leaders to discuss reconstruction 00:00:00 - 00:05:05 prior to start of conference, people mingling in the room 00:05:10 - 00:09:30 start of meeting by the reading of a few verses from the Koran - everyone stands and then is seated 00:09:30 - 00:13:50 thank you to all who have come from all areas of Iraq - some had difficulties getting there but applaud your commitment to building a new Iraq. Purpose of meeting is for those assembled to hear from Jay Garner regarding reconstruction and humanitarian structure as well as to continue the national dialogue that was started in Nasaria in regard to building the Iraqi interim authority as soon as possible. First Jay Garner will prsent and then discussion will begin about the principles in building a free and democratic Iraq. We will read the principles that were developed in Nasaria to facilitate that discussion and for volunteers to chair and co chair those sessions. After lunch we will have a focused discussion on how to build the Iraq INterim Authority. INtroduces General Jay Garner 00:13:50 - Garner mentions that the Iraqi people brought forth a culture that represents civilization and codification of law (mike goes out). 00:16:00 - 21:00Garner mentions that the raqi people brought forth a culture that represents civilization and cbrought about goverment process and codified laws for the first time and society as we know it started here. (simultaneous translation going on ) .... it is our responsibility to give democracy a chance here today and continue from what we started in Nasaria. I am here and Tim Cross is here, is to create an environment in Iraq which will give us a process to start a democratic government, which represents all people, all religions, all tribes, all ethnic groups, all profesions and to begin that process that we will have a government that will represent a free society. TO start that we have two paths to travel and these paths are side by side. First path is reconstruction and the second path is government. I am going to give you a report on reconstruction and you are going to give the process of government. It is our job to give you the tools you need and the resources. But before we can begin reconstruction successfully we have to have security. We are trying to put security throughout Iraq. It is very difficult but we will make this happen....discusses an upcoming town hall meeting about security and we have asked for people to join us and we will do this throughout Iraq. The qustion will be where do you need security and how do we bring forth a police force that will be accepted by the people. 00:21:00 - 00:24:30 Tim Cross introduces himself and talks about how he helped to liberate Kuwait 12 years ago. He refers to many assembled in the room have returned to Iraq after several years and with great pride we have come to help you rebuild this great country. He says he knows security is a big issue and it is of concern to all but that they are working hard to make it better. There are people who are claiming to be working with the Coalition and they are using force to move people from their homes and establish their own areas of responsibiity.. General McKiernan who is responsible for secure environment in which we operate, has made it clear that this is unacceptable...these people are not working with us - 00:24:30 - 00:28:00 ws of room. Garner talking that one of the most important things is to get the people back to work. and in a matter of weeks we will be able to pay people salaries. They discuss payment process. He introduces general from Corps of Engineers who will help to get infrastructure working and to get materials here to your engineers. 00:28:00 - 00:32:33 General Carlstadt(?) talks about success of getting power plants up and running. We must now turn our attention to the national system so we can move power to where it is needed more effectively. Electrical system requires fuel so we are working hard to restore the oil fields. Our first priority is to provide fuel to the refineries because we know this nation provides for itself in the area of fuel. It is aprropriate that the first flowing of oil in a free Iraq is for the benefit of the Iraqi people (applause). We know it is importnat to get the oil flowing for export as this is the wealth of the Iraqi people and you must benefit from that wealth. When I say ""we"" I am referring to the Iraqi people with the assistance of the American and British. The key is to get your peopleback to work. This is a nation of engineers and you are very very capable of doing this on your own. The people we have worked with show confidence and commitment and with hazard to their own health to put your systems back in place. 00:32:35 - 00:36:45 ws room - Garner talks about health and sanitation needs - this goes back to security issues. pan of room. Talks about the needs for people in public service to come back to work and we are prepared to pay them rapidly. TIm Cross talks about how they plan to implement this through meetings with people at the individual ministries to locate the leaders of the ministries and to listen to their needs. 00:36:45 - 00:41:40 Garner talks about preparations to be ready for the harvest. So the work this week and next is to provide security and get water, hospitals, teachers and students back to pre-war and to prepare for the harvest. Cross adds that there is assistance from other countries from around the world. We look to you to tell us how best the international community can help... we will make mistakes. Some of the things we have spoken about will take time. We need to hear from you when we make mistakes and we will try to improve and not make those mistakes again. We need you as the possible future leaders of Iraq to talk to your people to help and to be patient so that together in the weeks and months ahead their lives will get better instead. Garner talks about how he prays that his two grandaughters will be able to grow up in a world full of peace and prosperity. And now we have this opportunity to establish a government where your sons and daughters, grandsons and grandaughters will be safe and free
