A Mexican fisherman reported the sighting in the waters off of the state of Veracruz, about 20 miles (32.19 kilometres) from the coast. Humpback whales, renowned for their underwater vocalising, migrate at this time of year in search of the warm waters of the Caribbean, but it is unusual for them to venture into the Gulf of Mexico. Local fishermen say they could have gone there in search for food. Humpback whales follow a regular pattern of feeding in moderate or cold climates and then migrate to warmer waters to breed. This was the first recording of humpbacks in Mexican waters off the Gulf of Mexico, according to the Marine Mammal research programme of the University of Southern Baja California.
