ALICIA KEYS SWEEPS BOARD AT SOUL TRAIN AWARDS
ALICIA KEYS continued her Grammy winning streak at last night's (20MAR02) presitigious Soul Train awards, winning three trophies including Best Newcomer and Best Single.
Veteran R&B rockers the Isley Brothers also took home three trophies from the 16th Annual Soul Train Music Awards.
Keys, who scored five Grammys last month, won the best R&B/soul or rap new artist for her hit 'Fallin'', while her 'Songs in A Minor' took the best R&B/soul female album honor. She also was named female Entertainer of the Year.
The Isley Brothers also won a trio of awards, including best R&B/soul single and album by a group, band or duo. The group, which made a comeback more than 42 years after their first hit single 'Shout', was named Entertainer of the Year for male artists.
Aaliyah won best R&B/soul single, female for 'Rock the Boat'. She died in a plane crash in August, shortly after completing a video for the song in the Bahamas.
On the red carpet APTN talked to Destiny's Child member MICHELLE WILLIAMS who said the group are planning to spend more time on "solo" projects.
USHER, who won the Best Male Album award for "8701" (said eight seven oh one) explained the significance of the awards: "As a kid you watched Soul Train every week and think 'I want to be like those artists'. And then they started doing the awards and I thought if there's one thing I achieve in life it's to get one of those awards."
Alicia Keys signed to Arista Records in 1998 and appeared on the soundtracks of 'Shaft' and 'Men In Black' but it wasn't until she went to music mogul Clive Davis' J Records that her career took off. In a little over a year Alicia Keys has become one of the biggest artists in the world. She admitted it was a surprise.
"It shocked me," said the young Keys, "it definitely shocked me."
The Soul Train awards honor R&B, soul, hip-hop, rap and gospel performances. Winners were announced Wednesday, and the program was taped for a syndicated television broadcast that will air later this month.
