INTERVIEW: David Susskind: What drives you to particular assignments? Why do you decide to photograph Picasso? Or why do you hop off to follow a particular war struggle somewhere? What's the incentive? David Douglas Duncan 15:51 Your mix two different factors there, David? Actually, the Picasso coverage came as a result from my work in Afghanistan, where as a Life magazine photographer, and had been given a very strange stone carved around the time of Christ with image of a rooster and it and I said, that looks like a Picasso's work. I came back through cannes and the French Riviera gave it to Picasso mounted in a ring. And that led into a friendship that went on for the last forever. No, I hope I met him in 55. And it's still a very deep friendship. David Susskind 16:27 You know, David it occurs to me, we're a visual medium, we describe you as one of the world's great photographers. Indeed you are, we should look at some of your stunning photographs. What Why don't we have a look at them and show them to the audio pleasure? Alright, the first one. What is this photograph? David Douglas Duncan 16:43 Well I was a kid in Kansas City, Missouri and started off trying to do something more with a camera nearly 30 years ago, then just take snapshots around the house. So I took my old Graflex and shot a picture in an old folks home great grandmother, her great granddaughter and the child simply helping the old lady to thread a needle. Simple as that. But trying to tell a story my way photographically. David Susskind 17:08 It's a beautiful picture. David Douglas Duncan 17:10 This I made in 1937. Can you Imagine David Susskind 17:12 let's have a look at the next one. What is this one going to be doing? David Douglas Duncan 17:17 This is in Trinidad. As a kid from Missouri, I kept looking for faraway places to make pictures and talk Pan American Airways and descend me out along their route to do travel posters, and Omaka and an East Indian priest. Simple as that. But photographically the thing. It's amusing and that is the the contour of the ear of the priest and the contour the beak of the macaw. These are childhood pictures. David Susskind 17:43 These were done as a child when David Douglas Duncan 17:43 I was 18. David Susskind 17:49 Alright, let's have a look at the next one David Douglas Duncan 17:50 I had been making pictures for about two about a year in fact David Susskind 17:54 What is this one David Douglas Duncan 17:55 Mexico Patzcuaro at Ruskin Indian, using a butterfly net designed before Columbus came to the new world called a butterfly net they sent a seine out fish from the like simple ordinary travel pictures that a kid was making with his camera I look at them like a stranger now, but they put them in the beginning of this last book, to try to give a foundation for later work. And our world changed very quickly. We got into World War Two Of course, I was a Marine combat photographer. But prior to that, I went to South America for the American Museum of Natural History here in New York, big game fishing. And while on those expeditions, I made one shot I think we have on the monitor here David Susskind 18:38 Let's have the next one. David Douglas Duncan 18:40 It's a shot made off the San Lorenzo island of Peru. of guano birds. hundreds of 1000s Wanna bird guano birds? That's the fertilizer. Yes, it's harvested every four years. They come in the mountains in the foreground are there are there ness and hundreds of 1000s of birds were there? And I was downwind. David Susskind 19:00 down of a couple of 100,000 birds. What about war? You've covered war a lot. David Douglas Duncan 19:06 Yeah I was shooting at that time, I say for the American Museum here in New York and then off South America. Then when the work came, I became a Marine combat photographer and went to South Pacific. And I think there's a shot here that might interest you because in photography, it's hard to say that any single picture is unique, but this is unique. It's an act of treason to Japanese officer lieutenant who walked in the Marine Corps lines and Mindanao and said I want to surrender and I want to bomb my own headquarters. And the Marine colonel said fellow would fix you right up as a Japanese lieutenant in a way so a B 25 bomber in the background are more flights of the of the attack groups. Far out are the course air fighters and for three days. We hit his headquarters with everything we had in the book for David Susskind 19:55 you were in the bomber. David Douglas Duncan 19:56 We flew together nicely just before the a bomb was dropped. That's A naked act of treason. And it's never been photographed before or since to my nice class fuxion Restroom have given secret to the Soviet Union, but that's treason. David Susskind 20:09 What's this next photograph? David Douglas Duncan 20:12 It's funny, you know, it's not funny at all, actually, but I came out of WW II as a Marine, went into Palestine as a Marine as a Life magazine photographer and ran into more violence. That's right. That's an Arab one of three. Killed closer than you're sitting to me. No, David. It was a group of terrorists were raiding Godwin bank in Jaffa. I heard the bombs go off right into the attack group. Left up one street perfectly clear. Look up the next street. A guy with a machine gun in the backseat of North Chevy said ready to cut loose. Luckily for me, they thought I was Jewish. I don't khaki shirt, khaki pants. The driver just weigh me against the wall and they cut loose with the Brandon killed all three of them. violence violence has followed me all my life. It's very strange. I've sought beauty with men like Picasso. But there's been a deep involvement of violence. That's the whole the whole theme of Yankee Nomad, this book that

49874 ISRAEL HOUSE IN THE DESERT 1947 JOSEPH KRUMGOLD FILM
Note: this film is entirely in Hebrew. Anyone who wants to translate a bit of it for us and post details, is very welcome!

One of fifteen films made by beloved author Joseph Krumgold working with Norman Lourie, ISRAEL HOUSE IN THE DESERT won a medal for best documentary at the Venice Film Festival in 1948. The film was used to raise money and awareness in the United States about the plight of Jewish settlers in Palestine as part of the United Palestine Appeal of 1947-48. The film shows the difficult task of converting desert lands into viable farmland through irrigation and careful farming techniques. Although somewhat dramatized, the film is fairly accurate in terms of showing the co-operative farming efforts of the period, with settlers living in tents (11:10) performing back breaking labor in their struggle to make the land useful. At (12:50) a shabbat service is seen, and at 14:20 Arab neighbors are seen with the Israelis. At 14:30, a water pipeline is shown that ensures further agricultural development of the desert lands. By the end of the film the situation is greatly improved and tractors are being used to develop farmland which is now bountifully producing crops.

The author Jospeph Krumgold, who is most well known for his award-winning children's books, didn't turn to writing for this audience until mid life. He was born in 1908. His father Henry was a movie house operator and exhibitor and his older brother accompanied the silent films on organ. By the time Krumgold was 12 years old, he decided on a career in film. He wrote a number of screenplays in Hollywood when "talkies" first gained popularity between 1930-1945. An example of one of these films, Lady Behave, can be seen below. His first adult novel, Thanks to Murder, was published in 1935 by the Vanguard Press. Working in the Office of War Information during WW II, Krumgold became interested in traveling and documenting real places and people. This resulted in him producing several movies and directing a handful of documentaries. In 1947 he moved to Israel with his wife Helen Litwin where he was associated with Palestine films. He made 15 films while in Israel including The House In The Desert which won a prize at the Venice Film Festival. His luck with prizes though, was just beginning. When he returned to the United States in 1952, he owned and operated his own production company through 1960. During this time, he lived with his wife and son, Adam, on a 120 acre farm in Hope, New Jersey. His next novel, and his debut book for children, was And Now Miguel, first published in 1953. It was based on the screenplay of a documentary he made with the same title that took place outside of Taos, New Mexico. The Thomas J. Kromwell company commissioned the book and it ended up winning the prestigious Newbery Award.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! But some students worry events could move in that direction.
\n

\n
Some Jewish groups say the protests are causing unnecessary tension on campus, and the country’s federal opposition leader has called them “racist” and “antisemitic.”
\n

\n
At the pro-Israel “Camp Shalom” at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Jewish students said they were on edge after strangers came into the camp and spat on a sign attached to a tree that reads “Zionist and proud.”
\n

\n
From the other side of the Great Court, Liam Parry from Students for Palestine UQ camp said, “We’re here to speak up for Palestine and we’re not interested in people trying to provoke a fight or anything like that.” He said there’d been no interaction between the two opposing camps. “We’ve basically been ignoring them,” he added.
\n

\n
Meanwhile, at Monash University in Melbourne, Students for Palestine organizers said in the early hours of Thursday, a group of 12 people wearing Australian and Israeli flags tore down Palestinian flags and trashed the camp kitchen.
\n

\n
“We will not be intimidated by these people,” said Students for Palestine Monash representative Madeline Curkovic.
\n

\n
Tensions build over ‘intifada’ video
\n

\n
About 50 tents line the quadrangle at the University of Sydney, where up to 100 protesters are sleeping each night.
\n

\n
It’s been relatively peaceful so far. The students are mindful of scenes in the US, where police have made hundreds of arrests on campuses across the country and have sent officers to clear camps and building occupations.
\n

\n
“I think we’re very concerned to see a repeat of the scenes in America, which have been truly horrifying,” said Shovan Bhattarai, a 25-year-old USYD history student.
\n

\n
Jasmine Al-Rawi, convenor of the USYD Students For Palestine, said they’ve planned a “peaceful, static demonstration.”
\n

\n
“We want to just stay here, to say that we have a right to protest peacefully, here on our campus, and demand an end to a genocide,” said Al-Rawi, 21, who studies architecture.
\n

\n
But Jewish groups say USYD is not a safe space as long as the protests are allowed to continue, and on Friday called supporters to march against what they call “a disturbing trend of antisemitic and anti-Israel activities” at the university.
\n

\n
More than 200 people, some wearing Israeli and Australian flags, gathered at the Sydney campus, but there was no direct encounter between them and the pro-Palestinian group, which had urged followers to help them “defend” their camp.
\n

\n
In a show of unity, some pro-Palestinian protesters formed a human chain around the camp, but as of mid-morning there was no sign the pro-Israel protesters had any intention of attempting to breach it.
\n

\n
Tali Hamilton, a science student at the counter-rally, said the pro-Israel protesters tried to talk to members of the pro-Palestinian camp, but they walked away.
\n

\n
“The whole thing is horrific, what happened in October is horrific and what has happened after is horrific. We don’t want war, but the perpetrators are Hamas. To look at the news makes me want to crawl into a hole,” she said.
\n

\n
The invitation to Friday’s counter-rally – organized by Together for Israel and Stand with Us – pointed to a video that circulated on social media last week that showed children attending an excursion to the pro-Palestine camp, during which a child led chants of “intifada,” the Arabic word for uprising, and “from the river to the sea.”
\n

\n
“This is unacceptable and we cannot allow universities to condone such actions on their campuses,” the invitation said.
\n

\n
The chant “from the river to the sea” has long been heard at pro-Palestinian rallies around the world and is often accompanied by the phrase “Palestine will be free.” The phrase demands equal rights and the independence of Palestinians, although in some cases it is intended to call for the abolishment of Israel.
\n

\n
In response, pro-Palestinian groups rallied behind the organizer of the children’s event, author and academic Randa Abdel-Fattah, with more than 1,100 people signing a letter of support.
\n

\n
Abdel-Fattah said in a lengthy statement on social media platform X that children were offered the megaphone “to lead chants of their choosing, hoping to give them a sense of agency in a moment of distress.”
\n

\n
Those that “jumped at the opportunity had been to the weekly rallies for over 7 months, observing and participating in chants and calls for justice, freedom and an end to the slaughter,” she wrote.
\n

\n
She said attempts to depict the children as “radicalized and violent extremists” was “reprehensible.”
\n

\n
Members of Students for Palestine told CNN on Thursday their protest includes a diverse array of students and does not tolerate any form of discrimination.
\n

\n
Calls for universities to cut ties with Israel
\n

\n
Scenes of violent clashes at US colleges have made the protesters in Australia even more determined to dig in – and for now, Australian universities have not signaled any intent to remove them.
\n

\n
Mark Scott, vice chancellor of the University of Sydney, suggested a US-style police response was unlikely to unfold on campus.
\n

\n
“I am not convinced what is happening on US campuses demonstrates a pathway to greater safety and security for any students or staff, nor helps to build a community committed to free speech and thoughtful exchanges of divergent views,” Scott said.
\n

\n
He said he was “shocked” to see children involved in the protest last week, and understood how upsetting it was for some people. “You will get moments in protests that can be uncomfortable and upsetting,” he added.
\n

\n
In a statement, the University of Queensland said it’s “committed to freedom of speech and is reiterating expectations that while expressing their views, people treat one another with dignity and respect to ensure our community can go about their studies, research, work or other activities.”
\n

\n
Similar to demands from protests at other universities, Students for Palestine UQ want the university to disclose all links to Israeli companies and universities, and cut ties with weapons companies.
\n

\n
This week they yelled slogans outside the Boeing-led Research Center, which opened on campus in 2017 to allow the aircraft manufacturer’s staff to collaborate with university researchers and students.
\n

\n
Boeing has links to Israel that date back “more than 75 years” and supplies the Israel Defense Forces with nine products, according to its website. Its involvement in Israel’s bombardment of Gaza has also angered student protesters in the US.
\n

\n
The Australia Palestine Advocacy Network (APAN) has called on Australian universities to protect the right of students to peaceful protest, saying their action is justified.
\n

\n
“It is unconscionable that our educational institutions are cultivating relationships with a genocidal regime and companies and entities that profit from Israel’s brutality towards Palestinians,” said APAN President Nasser Mashni.
\n

\n
But Danny Channan, a member of the small Queensland Jewish community, said allowing protesters to camp on site created a culture of fear among Jewish students.
\n

\n
He and others set up “Camp Shalom” as a safe space for students and staff to gather and discuss what’s going on, but he says they’ll respect the wishes of the university if they’re asked to leave.
\n

\n
“At the moment we see no purpose in encamping other than as a reactionary element, to provide a different sentiment, a different feeling and to provide a safe space,” he told CNN.
\n

\n
So far, he says there’s been no meeting across the path that cuts through the lawn on the Great Court that separates the two camps – something he hopes might change in time.
\n

\n
“I would love a world where instead of instead of, ‘I’m on Team Israel’ or ‘I’m on team Palestine,’ we’re just waving two flags and saying, I’m on ‘Team let’s figure this out.’”
\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n
AUSTRALIA PRO-PALESTINE PRO-ISRAEL PROTESTS CAMPUS STUDENTS UNIVERSITY GAZA ISRAEL HAMAS WORLD
\n
