*RES* BARBARA JORDAN FUNERAL (01/20/1996)
In Houston, Texas today the funeral of a "national treasure"...former congresswoman and University of Texas professor Barbara Jordan. President Clinton spoke at the funeral service, remembering Jordan as a "representative of the people with a powerful voice and a great spirit." In 1994, Clinton presented Jordan with the nation's highest clivilian honor - the Presidential medal of freedom. He also prepared brief remarks along with other mourners at the funeral sevice at the Good Hope Missionary Baptist church in Houston. Jordan was both a Texas pioner in politics, and a national leader in the civil rights movement. As a voice for the poor, Jordan in 1972 became the first black woman elected to congress from a former confederate state. Before that, she had been the first black woman in the Texas legislature. Again in 1976 Jordan broke down racial barriers when she became a professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson school of public affairs at the University of Texas. As a member of the House Judiciary committee in 1974, Jordan voted to impeach president nixon for crimes related to the Watergate scandal. The former legislator had been in poor health for several years before her death...and died of pneumonia wednesday at an Austin Hopsital at the age of 59.

Brewer, testifying in his own defence, said it was co-defendant Shawn Berry who slashed James Byrd Jr.'s throat. That was before he chained him to the back of a pickup truck and dragging him along a bumpy country road. For the first time to Byrd family heard one of the accused killers tell of the murder. They said they didn't believe anything he said. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There's no excuse on earth for what he done, nothing, and I wasn't interested and I wasn't buying any of it and I hope the jury wasn't either." SUPER CAPTION: Stella Brumley, Byrd's Sister For most of the day Brewer was on the witness stand telling of his life in prison, the tattoos and letters that linked him to a white supremacy prison gang. He also finally testified about the night that Byrd was dragged to death. Brewer says it was co-defendant Shawn Allen Berry who killed James Byrd Jr. by cutting his throat. The broken toe Brewer received he says came from trying to break up a fight between Byrd and William King. He acknowledged spraying paint on Byrd to stop the scuffle. Then he says Berry took out the twenty-foot chain, securing the body to the truck. In tears, Brewer refused to look at grisly crime scene photos. The final question from his attorney, Quote: Did you mean to cause his death?" The response: I had no intention of killing anybody. James Byrd Jr.'s sister accused Brewer of making the whole story up. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I know he was lying in fact he himself said he lied about some things and so when you think about it and when the bird is caught in the cage - what will a man not do to save his own soul." SUPER CAPTION: Mary Verrett, Byrd's Sister Brewer's trial was moved about 150 miles from Jasper west to Bryan to escape pretrial publicity. POLICE CHASE ENDS AERIALS / HD
EXT BROLL OF THE END OF A POLICE CHASE / A police chase through Houston Wednesday ended with a fatal shooting. The chase began around 8 a.m. local time when the suspect -- who has not been identified -- refused to pull over for officers. It is not clear what sparked the chase, but it is believed that the man was wanted for a burglary at an apartment, although police have not yet commented, KHOU reports. The suspect led officers to an area near the intersection of Fuqua St. and Featherwood Drive in southeast Houston. He stopped and ignored officers' commands for about 10 minutes. An officer then released a K9, which attacked the suspect, Fox 26 reports. Officers moved in on the suspect and four shots were fired, witnesses told the Houston Chronicle. A sheet was placed over the suspect's body. No police officers were injured in the incident.
