Kosovo Prime Minister - Presser by Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci
NAME: KOS PM 20080218I TAPE: EF08/0194 IN_TIME: 11:09:09:10 DURATION: 00:02:20:21 SOURCES: AP TELEVISION DATELINE: Pristina - 18 Feb 2008 RESTRICTIONS: SHOTLIST: 1. Wide of Hashim Thaci, Kosovo's Prime Minister, walking into news conference 2. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) Hashim Thaci, Kosovo's Prime Minister: "Today the republic of Kosovo is receiving recognition of Kosovo's independence from the strongest countries. Today, the new Kosovo state slowly is getting it's right to international recognition from the decision making countries." 3. Wide of news conference 4. SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) Hashim Thaci, Kosovo's Prime Minister: "In Kosovo and in the region there will be only peace and stability. The region has to work closely together towards global security, and tonight Serbia's reaction (from the parliament) towards declaration of Kosovo's independence understandably, was expected. But very soon we will send them and a letter of invitation for recognition of Kosovo's independence. But I need to state as well, that apart from what Serbia's state is declaring towards Kosovo - I'm stating as Serbia's prime minister stated, to ask the people of Serbia to stay out of streets and to go back to their normality. And this is what we need. Slowly Belgrade will understand the reality of new Kosovo." 5. Wide of news conference 6. Mid of Thaci and delegates walking out STORYLINE Kosovo's Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci on Monday welcomed swift recognition of Kosovo as a newly declared independent state, from the United States and major European powers. "Today the republic of Kosovo is receiving recognition of Kosovo's independence from the strongest countries," Thaci said during a news conference in Pristina. "The new Kosovo state slowly is getting it's right to international recognition," Thaci added. But US recognition of Kosovo's independence provoked anger from Serbia, who recalled its ambassador to the US on Monday. "Serbia's reaction towards declaration of Kosovo's independence understandably, was expected," Thaci said. The Kosovo Prime Minister explained that "very soon" Kosovo would send Serbia "a letter of invitation for recognition of Kosovo's independence." "Slowly Belgrade will understand the reality of new Kosovo," he said. Recognition from the US, Britain, Germany and France came hours after Kosovo's leaders sent letters to 192 countries seeking formal recognition. Britain has upgraded its office in Kosovo to an embassy. Spain led a group of five against the move fearing it could set a dangerous precedent encouraging separatist minorities elsewhere to seek statehood. Russia and China also oppose. The rift deepened a stalemate at an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Monday on the international response to Kosovo's unilateral declaration. Kosovo had formally remained a part of Serbia even though it has been administered by the UN and NATO since 1999, when NATO airstrikes ended former Yugoslav leader Slobodan Milosevic's crackdown on ethnic Albanian separatists, which killed 10-thousand people.

Scientist carrying out a test for Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Kosovo in 2008. This bacteria can cause the STI (sexually transmitted infection) chlamydia, trachoma, an eye disease that can cause blindness, and pneumonia, a lung infection. The sexually transmitted form can cause infertility if left untreated, and in Kosovo in 2008 this was a growing issue due to a lack of sexual education and awareness.

74542 YUGOSLAVIA AND BELGRADE / SERBIA 1930s SILENT FILM TRAVELOGUE
Released by Eastman Kodak as part of their Classroom Film series in the 1930s, this movie shows the people of Yugoslavia. It includes images of village life with farmers taking care of routines, women baking bread, dairy products being made, vegetables and flowers being planted and grown, pigs and other farm animals being raised, and more. A "modern farm" appears around the 6 minute mark with steam-driven harvesting machinery. The film also shows textiles being made, a school, and contains precious images of Belgrade.

Yugoslavia was a country in Southeast Europe during most of the 20th century. It came into existence after World War I in 1918 under the name of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes by the merger of the provisional State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs (itself formed from territories of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire) with the formerly independent Kingdom of Serbia. The Serbian royal House of Karadordevic became the Yugoslav royal dynasty. Yugoslavia gained international recognition on 13 July 1922 at the Conference of Ambassadors in Paris. The country was named after the South Slavic peoples and constituted their first union, following centuries in which the territories had been part of the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary.

Renamed Kingdom of Yugoslavia on 3 October 1929, it was invaded by the Axis powers on 6 April 1941. In 1943, a Democratic Federal Yugoslavia was proclaimed by the Partisan resistance. In 1944, the king recognised it as the legitimate government, but in November 1945 the monarchy was abolished. Yugoslavia was renamed the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia in 1946, when a communist government was established. It acquired the territories of Istria, Rijeka, and Zadar from Italy. Partisan leader Josip Broz Tito ruled the country as president until his death in 1980. In 1963, the country was renamed again to the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY).

The constituent six Socialist Republics that made up the country were Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, SR Croatia, SR Macedonia, SR Montenegro, SR Slovenia, and SR Serbia. Serbia contained two Socialist Autonomous Provinces, Vojvodina and Kosovo, which after 1974 were largely equal to the other members of the federation. After an economic and political crisis in the 1980s and the rise of nationalism, Yugoslavia broke up along its republics' borders, at first into five countries, leading to the Yugoslav Wars.

After the breakup, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro formed a reduced federation, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY), which aspired to the status of sole legal successor to the SFRY, but those claims were opposed by the other former republics. Eventually, Serbia and Montenegro accepted the opinion of the Badinter Arbitration Committee about shared succession. Serbia and Montenegro themselves broke up in 2006 and became independent states, while Kosovo proclaimed independence in 2008.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
