Close sign reading (Spanish) "Do you like winning? Bingo." 16. Wide of Bingo hall STORYLINE Protesters gathered in a Madrid street on Saturday to march against a decision by Las Vegas Sands to choose the Spanish capital for a big "EuroVegas" casino project. Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson announced the decision to choose Madrid over Barcelona for the multi-billion dollar gambling resort project on Friday night. However, with Spain in recession and considering a bailout, raising 65 per cent of the cost could be difficult. And there is no guarantee officials would agree to change Spanish laws to let gamblers smoke inside the casinos and the new buildings to soar above the skyline. Adelson's announcement was not welcomed by Spain's opposition politicians who said gambling attracts crime and that jobs such as hotel attendants, waiters and blackjack dealers are low paying and not a positive option for Spain's many young unemployed citizens. One opposition group, EuroVegas No Platform, rallied in Madrid's central Puerta del Sol square on Saturday. Protesters were angry as they felt Madrid residents were not consulted over the project, and they felt it would bring prostitution and immorality to the city. Others welcomed the venture, saying it would bring desperately needed jobs. Gaming investors have investigated bringing a casino to Spain before. Harrah's Entertainment Inc. - now known as Caesars - explored the idea of building a Las Vegas-style casino-hotel near the picturesque medieval city of Ciudad Real, 190 kilometres (120 miles) south of Madrid in 2005. Although an airport was built there and the site was reachable in less than an hour by high-speed train from Madrid, nothing came of the plan. Through its majority-owned subsidiary Sands China Ltd., Las Vegas Sands also owns the Venetian Macao and Sands Macao casino resorts, the Plaza Macao hotel, restaurant and shopping complex, and the Sands Cotai Central resort with three hotels and two casinos. NAVY SEAL GOES ON RAMPAGE IN VEGAS 2010
A Navy SEAL will be tried for randomly hitting people with a pipe on the Las Vegas Strip. For the first time, surveillance video of the brutal attack has been released. His attorney, meanwhile, argues the case should be dismissed. Luke Shawley first came to Las Vegas as a proud Navy SEAL in town to train at Nellis Air Force Base. In March 2010, he became a manic person who went on a violent, bloody rampage on the Las Vegas Strip, assaulting random people with a metal pipe. His chilling crime was caught on camera. "The video captures Luke attacking these people, and it also shows him at the bar over a five-hour period of time before these attacks, drinking and socializing with everybody," Shawley's attorney Ross Goodman said. Goodman says his client began the night with dinner at the Venetian with friends. Shawley later went to Tao nightclub. Shawley admits to drinking eight or nine Jack and Cokes that night. At around 3:30 in the morning – with his friends already gone - he suddenly went berserk. Metal pipe in hand, Shawley hit anyone in his path, including a 67-year-old woman. Tourists watched in horror as he targeted his next victim, bashing and beating him senseless. Blood flowed from the man's mouth and face. "He has no interaction with these victims. They are unprovoked attacks. They're random people, and it's an emotionless interaction," Goodman said. Shawley returned to Tao and targeted a nightclub worker in the liquor room. Within seconds, the fight escalated. Metro Police says Shawley threw people off of him and charged at an officer, punching him in the back of the head. Shawley was tackled and rushed to University Medical Center, where tests showed he was drunk. His blood-alcohol level was nearly double the legal driving limit. Before it was over, eight people were hurt. Goodman says he knows why Shawley was so dangerous and destructive. "Something happened where he unknowingly ingested drugs that were put in his drink," Goodman said. Goodman alleges Shawley's drink was spiked at Tao, even though lab results from UMC did not detect drugs in his system. "He was given a urine test, which tested for a limited amount of drugs, none of which are drugs that are commonly associated with clubs," Goodman said. "We later learned that hair testing confirmed the presence of GHB and Hydrocodone." Despite damning evidence like the surveillance footage, Goodman hopes to persuade a jury that Shawley should keep serving his country as a Navy SEAL and not serve time behind bars. "He loves this country. He loves being a SEAL more than anything else," Goodman said. The Clark County District Attorney's Office declined to comment on camera, because this is an ongoing case. A trial date is scheduled August 1. Shawley has been charged with 15 felonies and a gross misdemeanor. He is still an active duty Navy SEAL stationed in Coronado, California.

NAKED HIJACKER BELONGS ON THE SHORT BUS 2008
A naked man was arrested after hijacking a Citizens Area Transit bus. Las Vegas police said the man, 35-year-old Charles P. Sell, was first seen stealing a beer at the 7-Eleven on the corner of Lamb Boulevard and Washington Avenue about 8 a.m. An officer arrived at the scene and the man fled, a police spokesman said. Sell then climbed onto the back of a moving CAT bus traveling east on Washington, broke one of the back windows with his fists, and climbed in. He threw the driver off the bus and drove it about 200 yards before jumping off, according to police. An officer climbed aboard and stopped it. Sell was arrested and taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation before being booked at the Clark County Detention Center on felony charges of robbery, grand larceny and malicious destruction of private property, according to police. He was being held on $14,000 bail. Police said the man was possibly on drugs during the incident. Sell has a history of criminal charges, records show. He most recently pleaded guilty to burglary in 2002 and was given probation.

PETE BUTTIGIEG LAS VEGAS NV GAGGLE ABC 2020
TVU 18 PETE BUTTIGIEG LAS VEGAS NV GAGGLE ABC UNI 011120 2020 GAGGLE FOLLOWING A TOWN HALL LAS VEGAS, NV - Pete Buttigieg gave his first reaction to the latest polling out of Iowa that shows a slight drop in support. "What we continue to see is a fluid race but that we're in the hunt and we'll keep pushing with an underdog mentality all the way until voting begins," Buttigieg said during a gaggle with reporters after a rally tonight." [201025] Buttigieg is counting on Iowa to propel him onward during the primary and it's a state where he's invested the most resources to do well. The former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, says he's not going to get too caught up in changes between polls. "What we do know is that we're in a very strong position, there's no campaign that I would trade with and It continues to be the case that Iowa is very important because it's our opportunity to demonstrate our strength for a lot of voters who I think are very pragmatic, places like South Carolina and Nevada who above all want to see a candidate who can win." [201043] A recent Fox News poll out of Nevada showed Buttigieg outside the top 5. He was asked if being successful in Iowa and New Hampshire will help him in this state. "I think there are a lot of voters here who will be looking for that show of strength and Iowa is of course the first opportunity on the calendar to demonstrate that so it becomes more important than ever, of course will be campaigning here on the ground directly working to earn the votes and supports of the Nevada(?) and caucus goers but it'll also be important to do well in that first contest." [201210] Don't expect a change of strategy from Buttigieg in Iowa as the caucus gets closer. "The message won't change, because my values, haven't changed but you will see us continuing to build toward closing argument that really brings home, why the best nominee to defeat Donald Trump and be the best president. [201300] Speaking about the latest on the situation with Iran, in regards to the flight that was shot down, Buttigieg said "Iran is responsible and they have indicated that they're responsible." "It's also the case that the entire region is becoming even more dangerous and a place where a single mistake can lead to death and destruction, and even set us on a path to war that nobody can stop so the priority now has to be making sure that we walk away from instead of toward that brink of war." [201105] Tonight's rally was held in the gym of Silverado High School. It was an impressive turnout for Buttigieg. His campaign says there were over 900 people who showed up to see the mayor. During Q&A, Buttigieg was asked for his number one foreign policy priority is, to which he said is restoring the credibility of the United States. "While I will never hesitate to use the tools of the United States strengths when necessary in order to keep us safe, I will also never hesitate to make sure we reach out and include our allies in our decisions and build up the friendships that do the bulk of the work to keep us safe. And make sure that the United States is known to be a leading nation in the community of nations." [193758] And asked by a voter how he plans to compete with billionaire candidates, Buttigieg said "it's a bit of a challenge." "I'll be the only person, I think, on the stage next week who isn't a millionaire or a billionaire. But we seem to be running ahead of a lot of folks who have a lot more money than we did." [194607] Buttigieg added that when he started his exploratory committee, he had no mailing list or years of building up campaign contributions, and yet he's turned into a top tier candidate in the current field of candidates. TVU 18 PETE BUTTIGIEG LAS VEGAS NV RALLY ABC UNI 011120 2020 GAGGLE [20:10:07] Mayor Rudy Jones, can I get your reaction to the latest? I will call where you dropped nine points. [20:10:12] We'll continue to see that there is a fluid race, but that we're in the hunt. We'll keep pushing with an underdog mentality all the way until the voting begins. [20:10:21] Martin, you talked about the importance of doing well in Iowa in order to compete in Nevada and South Carolina and onward. Why do you think? Why do you think was the cause of the turnout? [20:10:29] You know, we're not too caught up in the change from one poll to the next poll. What we do know is that we're in a very strong position. There's no campaign that I would trade with. China continues to be the case that I was very important because it's our opportunity to demonstrate our strength for a lot of voters who I think are very pragmatic in places like South Carolina and Nevada, who above all want to see a candidate who can go over here. [20:10:52] I know you recently tweeted, just find out everything going on in the Middle East with the military tit for tat with the flight that went down. Tell me, what's your reaction really means everything that's been going on in Iraq in the past couple of days. [20:11:03] Well, here's what we know. [20:11:04] First of all, with regards to the flight, Iran is responsible and they have indicated that their response. It's also the case that the entire region is becoming even more dangerous, a place where a single mistake can lead to death and destruction and even set us on a path to war that nobody can stop. So the priority now has to be making sure that we walk away from instead of for that break of war. More questions will be asked and Congress, of course, in the coming days and weeks. But the bottom line is we need to act to prevent war and to have a more rather than less safe and stable. [20:11:37] Iran is also placing blame on the U.S. for us, ratcheting up tension, high tension in the region. Is that fair? [20:11:44] Well, first of all, Iran is fully responsible for the shooting down of the airliner. It's also the case that we have a responsibility to make sure that the United States is doing what it can to de-escalate and to make the Middle East more stable once. [20:12:06] Your success in Iowa? [20:12:08] I think there are a lot of voters here who will be looking for that show of strength. And Iowa is, of course, the first opportunity on the calendar to demonstrate that. So it becomes more important than ever. Of course, we'll be campaigning here on the ground directly working their votes and supports a Nevada caucus goers. But it will also be important as well. And at first glance, the possible. Here without enduring well, I'll let analysts make their judgments. Victory is weak for the caucus in Iowa. Are you gonna be doing anything different? [20:12:36] To get respect to consolidate the party while also introducing yourself? Well, what we're seeing is everything from the voters who've been coming in to events for a year, narrowing down their choices to people who are just now. We've gotta make sure we're speaking Arabic so the message won't change because my values haven't changed. But you will see us continuing to build toward a closing argument that really brings home why I'm the best nominee to defeat Donald Trump and would be the best president to. We're on the Washington. To present don't think this has to and you're looking to introduce yourself to black voters, but in the CROSSFIRE, they found that only 3 percent. [20:13:15] The 40, you tell me when we're going to start to concerned about global warming. [20:13:20] Well, I think the biggest thing that we saw there is an interest in moving weather and making sure that there is a demonstration of being able to compete hands or feet. As president, we need to demonstrate that in one of the first chances we're going to do it will be. [20:13:35] Thank you.

MAJOR CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE (1992)
A PAIR OF SEVERE EARTHQUAKES RUMBLED THROUGH SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EARLY SUNDAY, CRUMBLING BUILDINGS, BUCKLING MOUNTAIN ROADS AND CAUSING AT LEAST ONE DEATH AND MORE THAN 100 INJURIES. OFFICIALS AT CALTECH SEISMOLOGY LABORATORY IN PASADENA SAID THE EPICENTER OF THE FIRST QUAKE, WHICH MEASURED 7.4 ON THE RICHTER SCALE, WAS BETWEEN JOSHUA TREE AND SAN BERNARDINO IN A SPARSELY POPULATED DESERT AREA ABOUT 130 MILES EAST OF LOS ANGELES. THAT AREA HAS HAD A SERIES OF AFTERSHOCKS SINCE A 6.1 QUAKE HIT APRIL 22. RESIDENTS OF THE LOS ANGELES AREA WERE AWAKENED BY A BIG JOLT FOLLOWED BY A 30-SECOND ROLLING MOTION AT 4:58 A.M. PDT. HUNDREDS OF AFTERSHOCKS ROCKED THE AREA IN THE HOURS AFTER THE QUAKE. ANOTHER EARTHQUAKE STRUCK AT 8:04 A.M. THAT SEISMOLOGISTS SAID INITIALLY REGISTERED 7.0 ON THE QUAKE-MEASURING SCALE BUT WAS LATER DOWNGRADED 6.5. THE SECOND QUAKE WAS NOT AN AFTERSHOCK OF THE FIRST BUT RATHER A SEPARATE GEOLOGICAL EVENT, THEY SAID. IT WAS LOCATED 6 MILES SOUTH OF BIG BEAR LAKE. IN THEIR WAKE WERE ROCK SLIDES, SCATTERED BRICKS AND CONCRETE CHUNKS, SHARDS OF BROKEN GLASS AND SEGMENTS OF SUN-WARMED ASPHALT THAT UPLIFTED AND SPLIT LIKE A FRESH HOMEMADE COOKIE. PAUL FLORES OF THE STATE OFFICE OF EMERGENCY SERVICES SAID SEISMOLOGISTS DETERMINED THE QUAKES WERE PART OF A ``MAJOR EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCE'' AND THAT OTHER POWERFUL QUAKES WERE POSSIBLE. ``THE CHANCE OF ANOTHER DAMAGING EARTHQUAKE IS GREATER THAN 50 PERCENT,'' FLORES SAID. OFFICIALS ADVISED SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS TO CURTAIL ALL UNNECESSARY TRAVEL BECAUSE OF THE THREAT TO BRIDGES. IN WASHINGTON, THE WHITE HOUSE SAID PRESIDENT BUSH CANCELED A GOLF DATE TO MONITOR THE QUAKE DEVELOPMENTS. ``I WANT TO EXPRESS MY CONCERN,'' BUSH SAID UPON HIS ARRIVAL IN WASHINGTON AFTER CUTTING SHORT HIS WEEKEND AT THE PRESIDENTIAL RETREAT AT CAMP DAVID, MD. BUSH SAID HE WAS GOING TO GET A BRIEFING ON THE DISASTER, AND PROMISED ``THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WILL DO EVERYTHING THEY POSSIBLY CAN DO.'' GOV. PETE WILSON SCHEDULED A TOUR OF THE QUAKE-DAMAGED AREA SUNDAY AFTERNOON. THE FIRST QUAKE CAUSED THE MOST SEVERE DAMAGE AND AT LEAST ONE DEATH WHEN A BOY WAS CRUSHED BY BRICKS FROM A FALLING CHIMNEY. HOSPITALS NEAR THE EPICENTER OF THE QUAKES REPORTED TREATING MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE FOR VARIOUS INJURIES. `WE DID HAVE A 3 {-YEAR-OLD CHILD KILLED (WHEN) AN UNSECURED FIREPLACE FELL ON THE SLEEPING CHILD,'' YUCCA VALLEY FIRE CHIEF MUNSEY SAID. MUNSEY SAID THE QUAKE APPEARED TO CAUSE FIVE FIRES IN THE YUCCA VALLEY AREA, WHICH HAD SUFFERED WIDESPREAD DAMAGE. AT LEAST 65 PEOPLE WERE TAKEN TO HI-DESERT MEDICAL CENTER IN JOSHUA TREE, SPOKESWOMAN THERESA GRAHAM SAID. MOST OF THE INJURIES RANGED FROM BROKEN BONES TO MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES AND SOME COMPLAINED OF CHEST PAINS AND OTHER HEART-RELATED SYMPTOMS. BEAR VALLEY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL TREATED AT LEAST 27 PEOPLE WITH QUAKE-RELATED INJURIES AND AILMENTS, SPOKESMAN JON SMILEY SAID. SEVERAL OF THE INJURED HAD BROKEN BONES AND A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WERE BEING TREATED FOR STROKE AND HEART ATTACKS. BECAUSE OF THE HOSPITAL'S REMOTE LOCATION, HIGH IN THE RUSTIC MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY OF BIG BEAR LAKE, FOUR PEOPLE WERE AIRLIFTED TO OTHER HOSPITALS, SMILEY SAID. AT JOHN F. KENNEDY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL IN INDIO, EIGHT PEOPLE WERE TREATED FOR EARTHQUAKE-RELATED INJURIES. A FEW PEOPLE WERE TREATED FOR MINOR QUAKE-RELATED INJURIES AT DESERT HOSPITAL IN PALM SPRINGS, BUT KAY HAZEN SAID THE HOSPITAL DID NOT YET HAVE A FINAL TALLY. THERE WERE SCATTERED REPORTS OF DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS IN DESERT COMMUNITIES NEAR THE FIRST QUAKE'S EPICENTER. A WALL COLLAPSED AT THE YUCCA BOWL, SENDING BRICKS TUMBLING ACROSS BOWLING LANES. THE OWNER PUT THE LOSS AT $1.2 MILLION. PART OF A ROOF COLLAPSED INTO THE SPORTING GOODS AND AUTOMOTIVE SECTION OF A K-MART. SEVERAL OTHER SHOPS IN COLTON AND REDLANDS SUFFERED BROKEN WINDOWS. BOTH QUAKES WERE REPORTEDLY FELT AS FAR AWAY AS SAN DIEGO AND PHOENIX. STARTLED RESIDENTS OF LAS VEGAS REPORTED RECEIVING A STRONG JOLT AND SEVERAL AFTERSHOCKS. EXPERTS AT CALTECH GAVE THE FIRST MAJOR QUAKE A READING OF 6.6, AND LATER REVISED THAT TO 6.7 ON THE RICHTER SCALE. BUT GEOLOGIST WILLIS JACOBS OF U.S. EARTHQUAKE CENTER IN GOLDEN, COLO., SAID THEIR INSTRUMENTS MEASURED THE QUAKE AS 7.4 ON THE RICHTER SCALE, MAKING IT CAPABLE OF CAUSING WIDESPREAD DESTRUCTION. IT WAS NAMED THE LANDERS QUAKE, AFTER A SMALL DESERT TOWN NEAR THE EPICENTER. THE SECOND QUAKE WAS CALLED THE BIG BEAR QUAKE. THE U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY, WHICH RECORDED THE HIGHER MAGNITUDE READING, SAID THE TEMBLOR WAS THE STRONGEST TO HIT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SINCE 1952, WHEN A QUAKE MEASURING 7.7 ROCKED KERN COUNTY AROUND BAKERSFIELD. THE BIG BEAR QUAKE CREATED GAPING CRACKS IN THE ASPHALT OF WINDING MOUNTAIN HIGHWAYS AND TOUCHED OFF NUMEROUS ROCKSLIDES, PROMPTING OFFICIALS TO CLOSE OR RESTRICT ACCESS TO AT LEAST SIX ROADWAYS. SOME RESIDENTS OF FOREST FALLS, NORTH OF YUCCA VALLEY, WERE EVACUATED AS A PRECAUTION AFTER SLIDES SENT UP THICK CLOUDS OF BROWN DUST. BUT THE LOCATIONS OF THE QUAKES, IN THE SPARSELY POPULATED AREAS OF THE MOJAVE DESERT AND SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAINS, LIKELY CONTRIBUTED TO THE RELATIVELY LIGHT CASUALTY AND DAMAGE FIGURES, OFFICIALS SAID. BY COMPARISON, THE OCT. 17, 1989, QUAKE MEASURING 7.1 THAT STRUCK THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA KILLED 65 PEOPLE AND INJURED MORE THAN 3,000. MORE THAN 100,000 BUILDINGS WERE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED.
