The singer braved the winter cold, arriving in an open topped horse drawn carriage led by a band of bagpipers. She was accompanied by courageous Kirsty Howard, who suffers from a rare heart condition and the pair were greeted by Harrods Chairman, Mohamed Al Fayed. A brass band played to the waiting queue of shoppers, followed by a live performance from opera singer, Lesley Garrett, who sung three songs prior to Victoria's arrival. Victoria then said a few words before the traditional countdown to the opening of the doors at 9.00am. Over 2000 eager shoppers then flooded through the doors on the hunt for bargains, spending almost £400,000 (GBP) in the first half an hour. Although Harrods caters mainly to the rich and famous, its sales are legendary throughout the world, as discounts of up to 75% are offered on some luxury goods. Many come from around the world to do battle for the cut-price items on sale, and an estimated 250,000 shoppers are expected to flock to the sale this Saturday. As the sale commenced, Al Fayed took Victoria Beckham and Lesley Garrett on the customary tour of the store, accompanied by the media scrum. The group focused on the jewellery and toy department with both singers trying on jewels. Victoria tried on a diamond necklace reduced from £100,000 to £75,000. After the walkabout, Victoria handed Kirsty a cheque for £20,000 for Francis House Hospice in Manchester, on behalf of Harrods. In return a shy Kirsty burst into her favourite Westlife song for the gathered press. Young Kirsty was born with her heart back to front and was given just six weeks to live in 1999. She has since raised £1 million for Francis House where she is a regular resident. Victoria first met the brave youngster when her husband, England football captain, David Beckham, accompanied her onto the pitch before last October's World Cup qualifier against Greece when she was team mascot. Victoria is the latest of a number of celebrities to open the bi-annual sales. Past celebrities include Salma Hayek, Jean Claude van Damme, Pierce Brosnan, Boyzone, Westlife, Cher, Gerard Depardieu, Charlotte Church and famously Sophia Loren. Victoria Beckham releases new single 'Mind Of Her Own' next month. It will be the second single from her album 'Victoria Beckham'. Wide shot of photo opp.with Bond 2. Angled mid shot Bond 3. CA photographers (Bond l-r: Haylie, Gay-yee, Eos, Tania) 4. SOT Tania: "Well it is a fantastic event to be performing at, it is just going to be such a great show, we are debuting a new single and we will be the opening act on the night so that is exciting for us. I think it is going to be broadcast on June the tenth, so that is very exciting, and of course you know we are a classically trained string quartet so we believe that we have a place here, and it should be a really exciting night for all of us." 5. Nigel Kennedy performing at classical Brits 2000 6. SOT Rob Dickens, chairman BPI: The great thing about the classical Brits is that it is open to every level, you can come in and there will be enjoyment form all kinds of music that forms from the basis of classical music. Nigel Kennedy will be repeating, he was just such a hit last year, we just couldn't go and not have him do the second one, and he is a great supporter and I spoke to him the other day, and the whole idea of the classical Brits he completely understands and supports. And we have just heard in the last few days that Simon rattle will be conducting one of his most famous pieces and will be joining us on the night, so a pretty fabulous evening it is going to be." 7. Music clip - Russell Watson performing "Nessun Dorma" (Classical Brit nominee) 8. SOT Angela Rippon, TV presenter and judge of album of the year: "Classical music can appeal to all the emotions, it can make you very happy, it can make you very sad, it can make you want to get up and dance, but it really does appeal to every one of your senses and something like the classic Brit awards on national television gives everyone an opportunity to say yes that is what classical music is all about in the twenty first century." 9. Music clip - "Dream A Dream", Charlotte Church 10. SOT Tania: "We just see ourselves as normal people, very natural, I mean we style ourselves, we don't have a stylist, we are not told what to say and how to act. I guess the sexy tag is always going to some along when it is four young women doing something like we are doing in the public eye, but we just think it is quite funny because we see each other first thing in the morning when we come out of hotel rooms going..." 11. C/A 12. SOT Haylie: "The classical Brit awards,we actually watched it in television last year as a group having pizza, but it is such an amazing occasion, and it brings a really wide audience into classical music that normally wouldn't be exposed to it, as you were asking before, so the classical Brits is a positive thing for classical music and introducing a whole new audience of people to it." 13. Performance by Bond POP GOES THE CLASSICAL BRITS ============================== The shortlist for the Classical Brit Awards has been unveiled, and pits William Orbit against soprano CHARLOTTE CHURCH and the soundtrack to Gladiator. Orbit, best known for his work producing All Saints and Madonna has been nominated for best album with 'Pieces in a Modern Style' - initially disqualified from the classical charts because of his association with pop, but later reinstated. The sexy string quartet BOND, whose album was excluded from the classical charts for similar reasons, will be performing at the event alongside violinist Kennedy (who has dropped his first name, Nigel), tenor Russell Watson and conductor Simon Rattle. Orbit faces stiff competition for the Best Album award, in the shape of nine other acts. They include RUSSELL WATSON for 'The Voice', ANDREA BOCELLI for 'Verdi', LESLEY GARRETT for 'I Will Wait for You', CARRERAS, DOMINGO and PAVAROTTI for 'The Three Tenors Christmas', BARRINGTON PHELONG for 'Magic of Inspector Morse', FILIPPA GIORDANO for 'Filippa Giordano', BYRN TERFEL for 'We'll Keep a Welcome', CHARLOTTE CHURCH for 'Dream a Dream' and HANS ZIMMER and LISA GERRARD for 'Gladiator OST'. The winner will be chosen by listeners of national British independent radio station Classic FM. Russell Watson is also nominated for Best Male Artist of the year, along with violin virtuoso Kennedy, and bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. Kennedy also has a second nomination under his belt - he's up for the critics award for his Elgar Symphony No. 3. TAPE: EF02/0946 IN_TIME: 14:56:12 DURATION: 3:26 SOURCES: APTN/EMI Classics RESTRICTIONS: music/performance rights must be cleared DATELINE: London. November 7, 2002 SHOTLIST 1. Film clip - The Queen Symphony 2. Various shots orchestra rehearsing 3. Question - "What are your earliest memories of Queen?" SOUNDBITE (English) Tolga Kashif - "My earliest memory is a really weird one, I was playing cricket at school and our music block was very near and a friend of mine was playing a radio and I hear 'Bohemian Rhapsody' for the first time and I thought that this is weird because this song went on for 6 minutes and obviously we know now that this was a revolutionary piece of music. I dashed to the piano and tried to pick up the tune. It's uncanny that 25 years later I would actually be working on the piece as a composer." 4. Various shots Tolga Kashif with orchestra 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Tolga Kashif - "I'm honored also to have the support of the band, obviously because Freddie has left us there is a bit of an aura around the whole issue at the moment and so I am very honored to be on board." 6. Various shots Brian May, Roger Taylor and Freddie Mercury's mother taking applause 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Brian May - "I was blown away, it was kind of hard to keep to my feet actually, I wanted to jump up. I've heard it a few times before because we had the rough but not the finished version, I had it in my car first of all and my first reaction was... jaw dropped, and I kept turning up and up and up as it got more magnificent. In a live situation it is another dimension and actually seeing happen live in the moment was totally thrilling, amazing." 8. Wide shot after party 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Roger Taylor - "Music is music and if it effects your soul and your emotions, it works. Too many boxes and too many names, let's break down the boundaries." 10. Film clip - The Queen Symphony QUEEN GET SYMPHONY TREATMENT FOR NEW CD A symphony inspired by Queen's most successful hits has been launched in London with a glitzy world premiere on the South Bank Wednesday (6NOV02). Brian May and Roger Taylor joined the audience to hear the music played by a live orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. 'THE QUEEN SYMPHONY' is a 6-movement piece which 'explores the themes' of Queen's back catalogue, from British composer Tolga Kashif. Kashif, the musical director behind the hugely popular charity ensemble cover of 'Perfect Day' for the BBC's Children in Need, has based the symphony on Queen hits including 'Bohemian Rhapsody,' 'We Are The Champions,' 'Who Wants to Live Forever' and 'Radio Ga Ga.' The composer also drew on Queen's musical influences and tastes to create his finished piece. Khasif was commissioned by EMI Classics to write the symphony, and has done so with the support of the surviving members of Queen. The band said in October they had not met Kashif before he embarked on the project, but endorsed his 'unique view and new dream.' He conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus at the South Bank Wednesday, for the live performance to launch 'The Queen Symphony' CD. As well as writing original compositions for live orchestra performance, Tolga Kashif has also written soundtracks for film ('The Criminal'), animation ('First Snow of Winter,' '2nd Star to the Left') and TV; composed and arranged for Lesley Garrett and conducted prestigious orchestras in the UK, Russia, Turkey and Poland.

SOT Rob Marshall, director (on casting): "I had auditions in New York City, work sessions with about 12 major actresses and Renee was the perfect choice. Richard I met, I heard that he had worked on Grease in the West End here and had done some musicals in New York City and when he was a kid coming out of school. All of a sudden I had this extraordinary cast. We worked really hard to make sure they could sing and dance and do it well. I wanted to make sure that it was them up there and not doubles and everything up there is them so I am very proud of that." 16. Arrival Renee Zellweger 17. SOT Renee Zellweger (on what attracted her to the role): "Rob Marshall, the director who's an extraordinary person. She taught me to really go for it because she doesn't hold back at all." 20. Film clip 'Chicago' CHICAGO COMES TO THE BIG SCREEN Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger braved freezing temperatures in London on Sunday evening for the UK premiere of the musical extravaganza 'Chicago', based on the award-winning Broadway show. The pair were joined at the West End premiere by past and present members of the smash hit musical, although fellow star Catherine Zeta Jones - currently pregnant with her second child to husband Michael Douglas - was not present at the screening. Zellweger plays seductive murderess Roxie Hart, who shoots her lover and ends up in prison alongside ruthless killer Velma Kelley, played by Catherine Zeta Jones. Looking stunning in a sequinned black dress by Chanel and showing off a new bobbed haircut, Zellweger went on a 10-minute walkabout to greet fans who had queued for hours in the cold to catch a glimpse of the star. She was untroubled by the Arctic weather - but then she has just spent months in Transylvania filming the movie "Cold Mountain" with Jude Law. Zellweger, 33, may be best known for her role as dumpy singleton Bridget Jones, but last night she showed off her figure, toned to perfection after undergoing a gruelling training regime for Chicago. Along with Zeta Jones, and co-star Richard Gere, she had months of vocal coaching and dance training to get her up to professional standard. Zellweger said that her Welsh co-star was never anything but glamorous - even at rehearsals. In the 40 (m) million US dollar film directed by Rob Marshall, Zellweger and Zeta Jones turn to Gere's sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn to save them from death row. Chicago is still playing to sell-out audiences in London's West End. Other famous faces who attended the premiere included singer Lulu, Richard E. Grant, Simply Red's Mick Hucknall and Elton John's partner David Furnish. CLEARANCE DETAILS Chicago Miramax 44 (0) 20 7535 8300 1 212 941 3800
