AUSTRALIAN STUDENT DISCOVES US MILITARY SECRET SITES
--SUPERS--\nTuesday \nHong Kong \n\nJanuary 30, 2018\n\nNathan Ruser\nAustralia National University Student \n\n --LEAD-IN--\nTHE PENTAGON SAYS IT HAS ALERTED U-S DEFENSE SECRETARY JAMES MATTIS OVER NEWS THAT A FITNESS TRACKING APP COULD HAVE REVEALED SENSITIVE U-S MILITARY LOCATIONS AROUND THE WORLD.\nTHE SPOKESMAN SAID THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE IS LOOKING INTO TIGHTENING ITS WEARABLES POLICY IN LIGHT OF THE DISCOVERY, AND REFINING ITS PRIVACY POLICIES.\n"STRAVA" LETS ITS USERS SYNC THEIR WEARABLES AND UPLOAD THEIR EXERCISE DATA--\nCREATING HEATMAPS.\nONLY-- A 20-YEAR-OLD STUDENT NOTICED THAT DATA UPLOADED BY MILITARY USERS ARE LIGHTING UP U-S BASES ON THE MAPS AS WELL. AND THAT'S NOT ALL HE NOTICED. \n\n --SOT--\nNathan Ruser, Security and Middle East studies, Australia National University: "Some of the more interesting stuff for example is not always in the military element of it. You can see a couple smuggling routes between Ecuador and Colombia, even a possible one between Mexico and the United States. But I think to me one of the ones that stood out the most is possibly the identification of CIA sites. For example, there's a lot of activity around a buidling rumored to be the CIA site in Somalia." \n\n --CNN WIRE-- \nTwenty-year-old college student Nathan Ruser has an interest in the Syrian conflict and an affinity for maps.\n It's this combination that led him to discover the potential security risks posed by fitness app Strava.\n On Friday night, the Australian came across a tweet of Strava's global heatmap, which was originally published in November 2017. Ruser noticed lit up in areas in regions of Syria and the Sahara, often not occupied by civilians, that indicated the presence of security forces working out near military bases and other sensitive locations.\n His findings went viral over the weekend, exposing remote areas and conflict zones where military personnel and government officials are seemingly present. This sensitive information could be used to track the running routes and identify locations where personnel are deployed.\n Strava, which allows users to share their running routes, tracks location data using GPS from Fitbit devices, smartphones, and other health tracking devices. \n Ruser, who is studying international security and Middle Eastern studies at Australian National University, said he noticed the fitness activity "pretty much the second I scrolled over Syria." \n\n\n -----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----\n\n --KEYWORD TAGS--\nSTRAVA FITBIT\n\n
