This rare film shows activities at the Farnborough Air Show in 1949, beginning with rare footage of the Cierva Air Horse helicopter. The largest helicopter in the world at the time of its debut, the Air Horse was unusual for using three rotors mounted on outriggers, and driven by a single engine mounted inside the fuselage. Also seen are the Black Arrows (the forerunners of the Red Arrows) as they demonstrate the very meaning of precision during their giant aerobatics display. Despite its size, roughly between an Airbus A300 and a Boeing 767, it was designed to carry only 100 passengers, each one granted room about the size of the entire interior of a small car.<p><p>The prototype was completed and flown in 1949, only to prove a commercial failure when airlines felt the airliner was too large and expensive to be useful. In the end, only the single prototype was flown; it was broken up in 1953 for scrap, along with the uncompleted turboprop-powered Brabazon I Mk.II.<p><p>The Farnborough International Airshow is a week-long event that combines a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries with a public airshow. The event is held in mid-July in even-numbered years at Farnborough Airport in Hampshire, England. The first five days (Monday to Friday) are dedicated exclusively to trade, with the final two days open to the public.<p><p>The Farnborough Airshow has its origins in the annual RAF Airshow at Hendon from 1920 to 1937. On 27 June 1932, the Society of British Aircraft Constructors held an exhibition of 35 aircraft by 16 companies at Hendon as a showpiece for the British aircraft industry. After World War II, the show recommenced at Radlett (the site of Handley Page's airfield) in 1946 and was held there until 1948, when the show moved to its present location of Farnborough, Hampshire, home of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, about 30 miles (48 km) south-west of central London.<p><p>Initially an annual event, the show has been biennial since 1962. The 7th Antarctic Ice Marathon, has taken place in perfect conditions. Thirty-six athletes from 17 countries braved the sub-zero temperatures and completed the 42.2km race at the bottom of the world. Great weather produced ideal running conditions as the marathon got underway. This resulted in a comfortable win for France's Clément Thévenet in a course record time of 3:47.07 hrs. Every competitor had to have their skin fully protected. Clothing included a full balaclava, goggles, gloves and mittens, long johns, waterproof running pants and several layers of thermal clothing under a ‘shell’. Hydration for the runners is difficult to manage in the excruciating cold and sweating was one of the biggest issues for all the runners to deal with. Mainly for safety reasons the course itself was laid out around the Union Glacier camp where markers were positioned in the snow and ice.The race started at the Antarctic base camp of the Union Glacier, in the southern Ellsworth Mountains, just over 600 miles (100km) from the South Pole at 10:00 local time.Competitors had to complete one and half laps of the course but were able to rehydrate themselves with hot drinks and snacks at one of five aid (check point) stations.Despite the unfavourable terrain, every competitor managed to finish this unique race, beating the elements and for many achieving a personal dream. It’s no wonder that this race is so alluring for marathon runners, the stunning surroundings make this one of the most beautiful and also challenging places on the planet.In the men's event, Clément Thévenet from France took the lead straight away. The 37 year old private banker was never challenged for first position setting an Ice marathon record time of 3:47:07 some 33 minutes ahead of 2nd place runner Alvin Matthews from the USA.Nine ladies took part in the women's competition. Yvonne Brown from London, England proved a decisive winner in a time of 4:26:10 while Emer Dooley (Ireland) and Alison Hamlett (GBR) finished second and third, respectively.Results Men’s Race1.
