Dramatic footage taken immediately after a gunman shoots up a Los Angeles Jewish day camp. Several shots, many aerial, show cops approaching a building with weapons drawn and leading hand-holding children to safety. Interviews with a fire chief and Mayor Riordan. Firemen move victims on stretchers into a waiting ambulance and a helicopter. Mothers and neighbors on the street show anguish.

Last night in Los Angeles, five people were shot in a hail of gunfire, near the intersection known as the flashpoint of the 19-92 riots. The five victims were taken to the hospital, where one later died. There is no immediate word on what sparked the violence.

This 1950 black and white film is one of a series of traffic safety films. It was produced for Lumbermens Mutual Casualty Company by Traffic Safety Films Inc, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Police Department. The focus of this public safety video is to build trust with the police department, educate on the importance of driving laws, and encourage drivers to respect those laws. The film begins with an Education Unit Police officer opening a binder titled “The Driver and the Law” (0:07-0:29). A 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster Convertible cruises down the road. A Los Angeles police officer on what may be a 1938 Harley UH 80 motorcycle drives by (0:29-0:40). The driver runs a stop sign (0:41-0:55). The police officer sees it and pursues the car, turns on his siren, pulls the car over, and gives the driver a ticket (0:56-1:41). A smashed car is shown, and police roll a man into an ambulance (2:20-2:35). A driving school is shown with a young man practicing manipulating controls (2:58-3:20). A judge issues a verdict to a driver, who pays the fine to a police officer (3:21-3:52). An accident investigation unit uses chalk to indicate skid marks on the road behind an accident, a police officer examines their findings, and a female police secretary files the reports away (4:03-4:27). Officers discuss the reports, track all accident locations on a wall map, and make calls to report their findings (4:28-5:05). A deployment officer dispatches motorcycle officers, who pull out into the traffic (5:06-5:27). An officer types a press release on a manual typewriter and processes film reels (5:28-5:45). The title of the film was likely inspired by Star Trek. <p><p>Opening: a man drives in his station wagon on a Los Angeles freeway. He drives with a cigar in his mouth. His driving off the freeway, onto city streets, and then overturning on a country road is shown in fast motion. A Highway Patrol car arrives on scene. Title: SPACE DRIVING TACTICS (:06-2:01). A stop sign. Four cars approach an intersection at different intervals: a woman smoking, a housewife, a woman with a hat, and a gum chewing socialite (all played by the same actress). The four cars drive near one another on a road. Title card: Speed, your relation to other drivers, your ability to react. Cars drive through traffic. Animation shows a car with extra space driving. A man drives and another car weaves (2:02-3:46). A police car will drive and do a braking test at 30mph. A shot of paint will mark the road. Two men drive in the Highway Patrol car. One of the men marks the road and the officer immediately brakes. Flares on the pavement mark the two spots, the signal and the brake application. How many feet it took to stop is shown.
