Stenotelegraph, 19th century
Stenotelegraph. Animated historical illustration of a device called a stenotelegraph, invented by a French civil engineer called Cassagnes. It was used in the French Chamber of Deputies in 1890, combining shorthand typing (stenography) with telegraphy. This machine enabled up to 200 words per minutes to be transmitted by telegraphy between French cities, with speeches thousands of words long transmitted in just one hour. 53994 1950s COTTON INDUSTRY & COTTON HARVESTING IN SOUTHERN USA (for b&w version see 51884)
Paul Hoefler Productions presents “Cotton Picking and Ginning.” The black-and-white educational film, made in cooperation with the National Cotton Council of America, provides the viewer with “the story of cotton from harvest to mill” and was the first film in a series of five subjects on cotton. There are a few strains of “My Old Kentucky Home” before we’re told how cotton is the most important crop grown in the United States (mark 00:40) and the most widely used fiber in the world. It takes about 200 days for cotton to ripen following planting, we learn, as the camera pans fields and provides up close shots of the white tufts. Stooped workers hand-pick cotton (mark 01:22) as we are told more of its importance as a crop. “Hand-picked cotton is cleaner and brings the highest prices,” says the narrator (mark 02:23). After weighing the the 70-pound bags of cotton it is carried up a ladder and tossed into a trailer. At mark 03:25, lines of mechanical pickers are shown making their ways through fields, gathering cotton at a rate 50 times faster than humans, freeing people to take others manufacturing jobs. Come mark 05:00 the viewer learns of the cotton gin and the process involved in separating seeds from the lint. A telescoping pipe literally sucks the cotton from trailers (mark 05:48) into the gin machinery, where saws begin the separation process, which is shown in slow-motion photography. The line is shown being pressed into 500-pound bales (mark 06:40), wrapped, and tagged, before being taken to a warehouse. Following an inspection, the bales are graded and offered for sale. As workers are shown loading cotton bales onto boxcars (mark 09:10) for transport across the United States, the narrator explains that cotton is also sold to other countries in high-density bales, which later are shown being placed on ships.

She is on the ground engaging with people who have been devastated. And of course, my heart goes out to all of the people across the southeast and she is focused on the uh response that includes moving the machinery of government $100 million plus from F MA flowing for response, moving uh to respond with thousands of personnel. That's what you should focus on and the politics is secondary to the pain that so many people are experiencing. Well, look, I think it's clear that he plays politics uh at, at the worst times, this is a time where we should be coming together. There is not a democratic response or Republican response uh to an emergency like this, there is a response that it relies on the compassion uh of our leaders and to move forward in supporting people at their time of need. And we, and we've heard reports that uh President Trump was known to play politics when it came to a response, asking for information about the types of voters and the the information related to his electoral prospects rather than supporting people uh when they need government. So I, I don't think we should take him seriously and we should focus on the people who need our help. Well, I'm here in North Carolina because this is a state where the Black vote matters significantly. Uh Remember President Biden uh only lost this state to former President Trump by 1.3%. And so we have to share the message of the accomplishments of the Biden Harris administration. But more importantly, where we're going in the future, which is why the vice president has been focused on things like wealth creation, emphasizing the importance of home ownership of small business growth, of uh ensuring that everybody has the opportunity to thrive in our economy by expanding uh the child tax credit. So it's got to be anchored in results anchored in delivering material benefits to all Americans, but especially Black Americans who are going to play such a vital role uh in this election. Well, he's such an effective messenger. I I am an alumnus of both of his presidential campaigns and his White House as well as working in the Biden Harris White House. So I know that when you think about the arc of uh his journey uh as president that connective tissue to what this administration has done the historic work of the rescue plan and the infrastructure law. So much more, he will build a bridge between uh that promise of hope and turning it into action under uh a Harris administration. So I look forward to seeing him out there delivering the message like no one else can.
\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n
POLITICS KAMALA HARRIS NORTH CAROLINA ELECTION 2024
\n

Hughes printing telegraph, 19th century
Hughes printing telegraph. Animated historical illustration of the printing telegraph invented in 1855 by the British physicist David E. Hughes (1831-1900). It was the first telegraph to print text at both the sending and receiving end. This meant that there was no longer a need for codes such as Morse code. The apparatus was powered by a weight attached to the chain at bottom centre. Later models were powered by electricity. Artwork from 'Electricite' (1911) by Max de Nansouty, part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
