Apollo 8 was the first human spaceflight to the Moon, launching on 21st December 1968 and returning six days later. Astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders became the first people to leave Earth orbit, and orbited the Moon ten times before returning to Earth. The success of the mission paved the way for Apollo 11's successful Moon landing in July 1969.
