EMI SET TO DUMP MARIAH CAREY ============================= Mariah Carey has had a very bad year - her album "Glitter" barely scraped gold, her movie of the same name didn't even achieve flop status, and she suffered an emotional breakdown. So how will she react to news that the record company who paid her £60 million as an advance on a four album deal want out of the contract? British based music giant EMI/VIRGIN are already seeking to buy the singer out of the eight month old deal. Reports in the Los Angeles Times and British tabloid The Mirror, suggest she is being offered a seven figure sum to walk away from the company. Former EMI boss Ken Berry signed the 31-year-old singer in April this year (2001). She received £15 million in advances for each album, £4.5 for video promotion and £1 million to promote four singles. Berry was himself ousted from the company in October with a £5Million payoff. New boss Alain Levy was hired after "Glitter" was released. The album sold just two million copies world wide, compared to the 20 million of her 1993 smash hit "Music Box", and Levy decided Mariah should go as part of his plan to cut the company's losses after a year of poor sales. Mariah Joined EMI after having a hard time at Sony Music, run by her by her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola. He discovered Mariah and masterminded the singer's climb to super stardom. Their five year marriage ended in 1998 and she has since described the time as the lowest point in her life. But she hit new lows this year when Carey checked herself into a re-hab clinic in July this year after suffering mental and physical exhaustion, and also suffered a relapse in September. Many observers think it was more than exhaustion, suggesting she had attempted to commit suicide. While her bad health limited her availability to promote her album, her poor sales are reflected in an overall music slump, with artists from Michael Jackson and REM to Paul McCartney and Macy Gray all suffering slow sales in 2001. Clip video 'Loverboy', Mariah Carey CAREY'S CAREER CRASHES All that glitters is not gold for Virgin Records who are poised to cut their losses in spectacular style when they pay off troubled diva Mariah Carey. After widespread media speculation, the singer is set to leave Virgin Records in a deal that will net the star $50 million in compensation. According to the New York Post, lawyers acting for Carey have secured the deal which will make her a free agent following just nine months of work for her new label. Virgin's five-album $100 million deal broken all previous records last year after her bitter split with Sony records but her latest album 'Glitter' failed to meet sales expectations and the film of the same name was a box office disaster. Meanwhile, the star behaviour became increasingly bizarre until she was eventually hospitalised due to mental and physical breakdown in July. According to the Post, Carey's US spokeswoman was unable to elaborate further on the developments. Whilst the stretch-limo load of cash will no doubt soothe the fact that Carey has been sacked, the fact is that 2001 was an awful year for the 31-year-old singer. How the insecure and sometimes difficult star must hanker for those glory days when she was the biggest female artist of the 90s, selling more than 140 million albums worldwide and putting out a near-unending string of hits including 'Heartbreaker,' 'Fantasy' and 'Always Be My Baby,' and winning two Grammys. She rose to superstardom on the strength of her stunning five-octave voice; an elastic talent who moved easily from glossy ballads to hip-hop-inspired dance-pop. Born in New York to mixed race parents, she was discovered as an 18-year-old by the Sony svengali Tommy Mottola, who signed the high-powered singer after hearing her demo tape at a party, he later married Carey (20 years his junior) in 1993. But their professional relationship lasted longer than their wedded bliss. The dysfuntional nature was referred to in the semi-autobiographical movie, 'Glitter', and Carey and Mottola divorced in 1998. She has now claimed to have found happiness with new partner Luis Miguel. Mariah Carey has checked herself into a hospital for "extreme exhaustion'', her spokeswoman said Thursday. The move comes after a series of bizarre incidents in which the singer refused to stop talking on an MTV show, wrote on her website that she doesn't take care of herself and was hauled away from an APTN interviewer after launching into a bizarre rant about "haters". In an attempt to explain Carey's behaviour her spokeswoman Cindi Berger said, Carey's busy schedule had contributed to her illness and hospitalization Wednesday night. Berger would not say what Carey's symptoms were, or where she was. "She's been working around the clock," Berger told The Associated Press wire service. In a separate statement, Berger said: "Carey has been hospitalized for extreme exhaustion after completing two movies, 'Glitter' and 'Wise Girls,' and simultaneously writing, recording and producing her album, the soundtrack 'Glitter.' " Before going to the hospital, the Grammy-winning singer posted a message on her official website. "What I'd like to do is just a take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone popping up about a video," Carey said. "All I really want is to just be me and that's what I should have done in the first place ... I don't say this much but guess what, I don't take care of myself." The message was removed from her own site, and Berger said: ``She was obviously very tired and not thinking clearly.'' (Parts of the message remained posted on MTV's site.) The news comes after Carey was dragged away from an APTN news crew by her press escort after launching into an incoherent rant. Carey was at the Roosevelt Field shopping mall in Westbury, Long Island, New York, where she was signing her new single "Loverboy" for fans when the incident took place last Friday (20July2001). The 31-year-old singer has cancelled all public appearances, including her performance at next week's MTV 20th anniversary party in New York. Last week, Carey made an impromptu appearance on MTV's ``Total Request Live,'' dressed in little more than a lavender T-shirt with the word ``Loverboy'' across it - the title of her new single. She was pushing an ice cream cart filled with popsicles, which she brought for members of the studio audience. "TRL" host Carson Daly kept trying to go into a commercial break, but the singer's talking prevented him. Carey then took off the T-shirt, saying it was a gift for Daly, revealing a tight tank top and skimpy shorts. She also brought with her a framed photograph of her mother, who she said was a huge fan of "TRL," and a handwritten letter from her mother to Daly, which she read aloud. When asked about the MTV appearance, Berger cited Carey's exhaustion and said: "She just hasn't been herself for a little while, and it just caught up with her." Carey came up with the story for "Glitter," about an aspiring pop star. The film, in which she has her first starring role, is scheduled for release next month, along with the album - which will mark Carey's debut for Virgin Records after signing a multimillion-dollar contract. "I'm trying to understand things in life right now and so I really don't feel that I should be doing music right now,'' Carey said in an audio message on her site. Mariah Carey is the latest in a long line of stars who have checked themselves into hospitals, or luxury health clinics like Britain's Priory, suffering from "exhaustion" and "extreme tiredness". Other singers and celebrities who have suffered from the same ailments include: British teen pop-star Billie (who collapsed in a nightclub), Robbie Williams (although he continued with his tour regardless), and supermodel Kate Moss who checked into the Priory clinic to recover. Carey, who has sold tens of millions of records, made her debut on Columbia Records in 1990 after being signed by Tommy Mottola, then Columbia Records president, now chairman of Columbia's parent company, Sony Music. The pair wed in 1993, and split up after four years. In her last year at Columbia, Carey had expressed dissatisfaction with the promotion of her music at Columbia. She has returned to the top of the charts with Virgin. "Loverboy" is expected to be No. 2 on next week's Billboard Top 100 singles chart. Among her past hits: "Fantasy," "Vision of Love," "Honey," and "Dream Lover."

B-roll Mariah Carey from the Top of the Pop awards CAREY'S $28 MILLION PAY OFF After weeks of widespread media speculation, Virgin Records have finally axed troubled diva Mariah Carey in a deal that will net the star $28 million. The announcement was made by Virgin's parent company EMI this morning leaving Carey a free agent again after just nine months of work for her new label. A statement issued to the London Stock Exchange today said: "EMI Group plc today announced that its subsidiary, Virgin Records America, has terminated its recording contract with Mariah Carey and has agreed to pay her $28 million in respect of this termination." EMI has been looking to cut costs as sales of CDs in the US have slowed in tough economic conditions and it seems the waning star has proved too expensive to keep. Virgin's five-album $100 million deal broke all previous records last year after her bitter split with Sony records but her latest album 'Glitter' failed to meet sales expectations, selling just two million copies worldwide and the film of the same name was a box office disaster. Meanwhile, the 31-year-old star's behaviour became increasingly bizarre until she was eventually hospitalised due to a mental and physical breakdown in July. The dysfuntional nature was referred to in the semi-autobiographical movie, 'Glitter', and Carey and Mottola divorced in 1998. She has recently brushed off criticism of her film debut 'Glitter' to take a more modest role in another movie 'Wise Girls'. Carey attended the premiere of 'Wise Girls' at Sundance Film Festival last week with co-star Mira Sorvino. She plays a waitress in a restaurant owned by the mafia, who witnesses an incident that gets her involved in the world of organised crime.

Sony released Mottola from the final two years of his contract, but his new company will be a partnership with Sony, but no further details of the venture were released. Mottola launched the career of a string of huge stars including Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Lauryn Hill and Pearl Jam. Among his best-known achievements was the discovery of a demo tape by a then-unknown Mariah Carey. Mottola signed the singer and helped launch her towards super-stardom. They also became a celebrity couple and, despite a 20 year age gap, Mottola and Carey were wed in 1993, divorcing five years later. Mottola tied the knot again with Mexican sex symbol, the singer Thalia, in 2000. One of pop music's biggest hitters, Mottola founded and ran Champion Entertainment in the 80s. After Sony's acquisition of CBS Records in 1988, Mottola took the Sony helm and guided the company through some of its most profitable years. But latterly, the company's profits have been hit by the slump in music sales. Last year, Mottola was attacked in public by Sony artist Michael Jackson who claimed the company failed to properly promote his album Invincible, and accused Mottola of being a racist, calling him "the devil." STORY: THE BACHELOR PREMIERE LOCATION: LA DATE: 3rd NOVEMBER One of the more eagerly awaited comedies this fall had its premiere in LA Wednesday night. Among those turning up to the screening of THE BACHELOR were stars CHRIS O'DONNELL, RENEE ZELLWEGER, BROOKE SHIELDS and director GARY SINYOR. The movie has a very basic premise. Jimmie Shannon (CHRIS O'DONNELL) values his freedom more than life itself. As his male peers, even his best buddy, Marco (ARTIE LANGE), begin to hook up in marriage, Jimmie continues happily plugging away with his dating lifestyle, in no rush to find the one. When he least expects it, Jimmie crosses paths with the adorable Anne (REN?E ZELLWEGER) and falls in love. After a three-year relationship, Jimmie feels the pressures of commitment and decides to \"give in\", reluctantly proposing to Anne at the most romantic of restaurants. Sensing his uncertainty and angry over his botched and lame attempt at a proposal, Anne dumps Jimmie back into the town known as \"Bachelorville.\" Soon after, Jimmie's grandfather (PETER USTINOV) passes away and wills a $100 million inheritance to his grandson, on the condition he marries before his thirtieth birthday, which is less than twenty-four hours away. After seeking advice from the family attorney, Gluckman (ED ASNER) and stock broker, O'Dell (HAL HOLBROOK), a desperate Jimmie hastily arranges for a priest (JAMES CROMWELL) to wait in the wings while he finds a bride. He tries to reconcile with Anne and several other ex-girlfriends, including Buckley (BROOKE SHIELDS), a well-to-do ex-debutante; Ilana (MARIAH CAREY), an opera singer; Monique (KATHARINE TOWNE), a chef; Daphne (JENNIFER ESPOSITO), a cop; Zoe (STACY EDWARDS), a window dresser; Carolyn (SARAH SILVERMAN), a college student; and Stacy (REBECCA CROSS) a commodities broker. Through these hilarious antics, Jimmie can't help but discover the true meaning of love. Actor Chris O'Donnell, who also serves as executive producer on the film, was looking to develop a romantic comedy from a distinctly male point-of-view. He was attracted by the idea that Jimmie Shannon is confronted for the first time with the idea that he may lose his freedom for the rest of his life and that scares the hell out of him. Director GARY SINYOR puts it more bluntly. The film is about a guy who panics during his proposal and spends the rest of the film realizing that marriage is really about finding your soul mate and being ready to commit simultaneously. In 1993, O'Donnell was nominated for a Golden Globe and won the Chicago Film Critics Award for his starring role opposite Al Pacino's Academy Award winning performance in SCENT OF A WOMAN, directed by Marty Brest. He went on to play 'D'Artagnan' in THE THREE MUSKETEERS, for which he was named the NATO/ShoWest Male Star of Tomorrow in 1994. He then adopted an Irish dialect to star in the romantic comedy sleeper CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, and won over audiences worldwide with his stand-out performance as 'Robin' in the highest grossing film of 1995, BATMAN FOREVER. Texan born RENEE ZELLWEGER gave a vulnerable performance as Dorothy Boyd in JERRY MAGUIRE that left critics raving. She was named Best Breakthrough Performer of 1996 by The National Board of Review, received a Blockbuster Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy and was nominated for a SAG Award. Most recently, Zellweger was seen in ONE TRUE THING opposite Meryl Streep and William Hurt. Other film credits include A PRICE ABOVE RUBIES and THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, which won critical acclaim at The Sundance Film Festival and garnered Zellweger a Best Actress Award at the Mar Del Plata Film Festival as well as an Independent Spirit Award nomination. An aggressive musical blend of metal guitar, hip-hop rhythms and rap-styled delivery of angry, confrontational, political lyrics, addresses RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE's concerns over inner city deprivation, racism, censorship, propaganda, the plight of Native Americans and many other issues. They've just released their latest album, BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES, which, this week rocketed to number one with a bullet on the Billboard 200, relegating MARIAH CAREY's new album to the number two spot. The album has been highly praised throughout the North American press. "Loud is back in.....Rage's new album is a landmark not only because it's an exhilarating mix of hip-hop and hard rock, but also because it's a winning fusion of loud music and intelligence" wrote Time Magazine. New York Magazine wrote: "On Battle", the band mixes scorched-earth heavy metal, funk, hip-hop with earnest, almost pamphleteering lyrics," USA Today says of the album: "Battle's battle of hymns benefit from the quartet's most focused, textured and melodic music to date." And Rolling Stone declares "Sonically, The Battle of Los Angeles is to rap metal what Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions . . . was to hip-hop." Formed in Los Angeles in 1991 by former Lock Up guitarist TOM MORELLO and ex-Inside Out vocalist ZACK DE LA ROCHA, with bassist TIMMY C and drummer BRAD WILK, Rage Against The Machine signed a major record contract which gave them creative control on the strength of a demo tape and some impressive early live shows. Further live work with Pearl Jam, Body Count, Tool and Suicidal Tendencies ensued but the band encountered problems with the French government during the Suicidal tour over T-shirts that showed a genuine CIA instructional cartoon on how to make a Molotov cocktail, taken from documents made for the Nicaraguan Contra rebels. The T-shirts were confiscated and destroyed by French Customs. The band subsequently released a self-titled debut, with a cover photograph of a Buddhist monk burning himself to death in protest at the Vietnam War, and rose rapidly to fame. The album was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and Rage Against The Machine enjoyed single success with 'Killing In The Name.' A sell-out UK tour in 1993 was followed by further powerful performances on the Lollapalooza festival tour in the USA. EVIL EMPIRE brought them to a wider audience, reaching number 1 in the USA. Tracks such as the highly political 'Vietnow' and 'Down Rodeo' showed the band at their angriest and most potent. Beyond the swearing are some of the most honest and powerful lyrical statements of the 90s. They're currently touring North America promoting the new album. The tour includes dates in: Oakland, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, Denver, Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Houston, Phoenix and Los Angeles.  Rage guitarist Tom Morello views the timing of the set's U.S. release as an aspect of the band's intention to give its fans "vital food for thought. We're telling the truth about the world as we see it. As with our other records, the intention here is to give people plenty to absorb and consider." The first single from The Battle of Los Angeles, GUERILLA RADIO, is a fierce rap-metal hybrid with muscular guitar riffs and lots of yelling. Spielberg, who had been an early favourite for the top prizes, had to content himself with the Oscar for best director and four other, minor Oscars. As expected GWYNETH PALTROW picked up best actress for her lead role in Shakespeare in Love and DAME JUDI DENCH was named best supporting role for her queenly performance in the comedy romance - a performance that features in a whole eight minutes of the film. The other big surprise of the night was Italian ROBERTO BENIGNI pulling off a stunning first - getting best actor award and best foreign film award for LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL. This tragicomic tale of a Jewish man trying to protect his son from the horrors of Nazi concentration camp also won for best dramatic score. And for once Benigni was almost lost for words. Paltrow was clear winner in the best gushing acceptance speech when she tearfully went up to pick up her best actress award. The fictionalized story of Shakespeare's love life also picked up awards for original screenplay, art direction, costume design and comedy score. Oscar host WHOOPI GOLDBERG got into the Elizabethan feel of the evening. Old timer JAMES COBURN won best supporting actor for his role as an alcoholic, abusive father in AFFLICTION. ELIZABETH, another best picture nominee, won just one award, for makeup. THE THIN RED LINE, another highly tipped movie, won nothing. "Am I allowed to say I really wanted this?" asked Spielberg as he accepted his second directing Oscar. His first was for SCHINDLER'S LIST in 1993. Saving Private Ryan also took prizes for cinematography, editing, sound and sound effects editing. In the marathon four hour awards show there was a hint of drama and controversy when director ELIA KAZAN stepped out to accept a lifetime achievement award. The film-maker behind classics like ON THE WATERFRONT is still reviled by many in Hollywood for naming names in a government investigation of communist influence on Hollywood in 1952. Many members of the audience gave him the traditional standing ovation while others, including actors NICK NOLTE and ED HARRIS, sat silently. Protesters with placards had gathered outside the ceremony to demonstrate against Kazan's award. Besides Benigni, the only performer in a foreign language film to win an Oscar was Sophia Loren for TWO WOMEN in 1961. And Sophia was there to help Benigni celebrate. Spielberg had another reason to celebrate the night. He was executive producer of THE LAST DAYS, a film about the Holocaust which won the best documentary award. The song WHEN YOU BELIEVE from THE PRINCE OF EGYPT soundtrack won for best original song from a movie. Performers WHITNEY HOUSTON and MARIAH CAREY were in the audience although the award was accepted by Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the movie song. But Oscar night is not just about awards. It's also about parties. Traditionally Vanity Fair magazine holds the party to be seen at on Oscar night. And among the floods of famous faces gracing the bash, the one person everyone wanted to see wasn't even in the movie business. MONICA LEWINSKY, a former intern at the White House, was the very special guest of the magazine. She was joined by lesser celebrities like Paltrow and MADONNA. The real a-list stars don't content themselves with just one Oscar night party. Instead they trawl around dipping into and showing their faces at all the top places. The party that had the most to celebrate was the Miramax bash hosted as usual by Miramax chairman HARVEY WEINSTEIN. The company has become expert in getting itself Oscar winners. This year it could celebrate the amazing successes of Shakespeare in Love and Life is Beautiful. Critics have attacked the way Miramax spends millions of dollars promoting its movies amongst the Academy elite who vote for the winners, but such carpings were not going to stop Weinstein from enjoying his Oscar night success. Elsewhere pop star ELTON JOHN attracted all his celebrity mates for his annual Oscar night party. Elton was receiving his guests at the Pagani's restaurant at the event which every year raising thousands of dollars for AIDS research. JIM CARREY, who was surprisingly not nominated for best actor for THE TRUMAN SHOW, did make it along as one of the presenters and managed to make light of his disappointment at not being nominated. Oscar is also about fashion and this year's Cher award for the most bewildering fashion statement was won by CELINE DION, who turned out in what could have been a pantsuit although no one was too sure. VAL KILMER paid his own personal tribute to cowboy stars of old by turning up with a horse and a black cowboy hat. And the new black is - anything but black. Stars went for the rainbow look with GEENA DAVIS in a peach corset dress while Oscar winner Paltrow wore a pink satin Ralph Lauren gown with a chiffon shawl. Paltrow also wore a diamond necklace and matching earrings. But she was outshone in the jewellery stakes by another nominee. LYNN REDGRAVE, who failed to pick up the best supporting actress award for GODS AND MONSTERS, wore "very expensive" diamonds from British royal jeweller Asprey & Garrard, and a stunning gown in a very spring powder-blue. Every designer name worth its salt was desperate to get its designs on the back of an Oscar nominee. And this year EMILY WATSON chose Valentino, BRENDA BLETHYN picked Escada and CATE BLANCHETT plumped for Galliano. But shock of the night was that Oscar-winner DAME JUDI DENCH ignored the big name Western designers for a shimmering and flattering outfit by Bombay duo ABU JANI AND SANDEEP KHOSLA. Her pin-tucked cream silk dress was topped by a flowing silk coat in the same colour, embroidered all over with white, gold and silver thread. Abu and Sandeep are feted by the fashionable in Bombay. Winning in the Oscar fashion stakes is almost as important for actresses as taking home a statuette. JENNIFER LOPEZ also opted for the full skirt on her black Badgley Mischka ballgown, although hers was strewn with jewels. The full skirts were reminiscent of the late 1950s, but British star of Zorro CATHERINE ZETA JONES went for a different kind of film star retro in a tight flame red Versace gown with a fish tail train, like a siren of the golden years of cinema. The show also included tributes to some of the Hollywood greats who passed away in the last 12 months. JOHN TRAVOLTA presented the tribute to FRANK SINATRA while Spielberg did the honours for STANLEY KUBRICK, whose last film EYES WIDE SHUT, which only a handful of people have seen yet, may well be an Oscar contender at next year's show.
