He called the more than 170 people killed this past year - heros. EMI SET TO DUMP MARIAH CAREY ============================= Mariah Carey has had a very bad year - her album "Glitter" barely scraped gold, her movie of the same name didn't even achieve flop status, and she suffered an emotional breakdown. So how will she react to news that the record company who paid her £60 million as an advance on a four album deal want out of the contract? British based music giant EMI/VIRGIN are already seeking to buy the singer out of the eight month old deal. Reports in the Los Angeles Times and British tabloid The Mirror, suggest she is being offered a seven figure sum to walk away from the company. Former EMI boss Ken Berry signed the 31-year-old singer in April this year (2001). She received £15 million in advances for each album, £4.5 for video promotion and £1 million to promote four singles. Berry was himself ousted from the company in October with a £5Million payoff. New boss Alain Levy was hired after "Glitter" was released. The album sold just two million copies world wide, compared to the 20 million of her 1993 smash hit "Music Box", and Levy decided Mariah should go as part of his plan to cut the company's losses after a year of poor sales. Mariah Joined EMI after having a hard time at Sony Music, run by her by her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola. He discovered Mariah and masterminded the singer's climb to super stardom. Their five year marriage ended in 1998 and she has since described the time as the lowest point in her life. But she hit new lows this year when Carey checked herself into a re-hab clinic in July this year after suffering mental and physical exhaustion, and also suffered a relapse in September. Many observers think it was more than exhaustion, suggesting she had attempted to commit suicide. While her bad health limited her availability to promote her album, her poor sales are reflected in an overall music slump, with artists from Michael Jackson and REM to Paul McCartney and Macy Gray all suffering slow sales in 2001. The 31-year-old Grammy-winning star wasted no time talking about her recent troubles. "We're expected to be perfect, " Carey told reporters, " but we're not perfect, we're human beings. I'm far from perfect, I'm still learning, you know. I overworked myself and I paid the price. My fans helped me through it and that's why I'm here tonight. And I'm grateful to be allowed." In August this year the 31-year-old singer cancelled all public appearances, including her headlining appearance at MTV 20th birthday party, and was rumoured to have checked herself into the Northern Westchester Hospital in New York. From there she was moved to a undisclosed hospital in Conneticut. Her publicist Cindi Berger told The Associated Press: "She has suffered an emotional and physical breakdown ... she is under psychiatric care." Berger denied tabloid reports that Carey tried to commit suicide. She said that just before the breakdown, Carey suffered cuts to her body, but the injuries were unintentional. "She did break some dishes and glasses, and she may have stepped on them," Berger said earlier this week. Carey's breakdown comes at perhaps the most critical point in her 11-year career. The singer signed a multimillion-dollar contract with Virgin Records in April after leaving Columbia Records, where she launched her career. She is also about to make her screen debut in a starring role in "Glitter" . The film, about an aspiring pop star, opens later this month. However, all promotion for the film has now been cancelled. Just before her hospitalization, Carey left two despondent messages on her official Web site, complaining of being overworked and getting too little attention from her new record label. She said she wanted to close her management company and take a break, but Berger said nothing has changed and her management remains the same. Before that Carey had made a surreal impromptu appearance on MTV's "Total Request Live," dressed in little more than a lavender T-shirt and pushing an ice cream cart filled with popsicles for the teen audience. She also made a publicity appearance at a mall, where her publicist took a microphone away from her to prevent her from speaking. Carey, who is divorced from Sony Music chief Tommy Mottola, had been dating Latin singer Luis Miguel. Berger said Miguel had not visited Carey in the hospital, but has called her manager to express concern. She said the two had not "officially broken up." Carey has sold tens of millions of albums and has numerous No. 1 hits, including "Fantasy," "Dream Lover," and "Always Be My Baby" but her career hangs in the balance. Sony released Mottola from the final two years of his contract, but his new company will be a partnership with Sony, but no further details of the venture were released. Mottola launched the career of a string of huge stars including Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Lauryn Hill and Pearl Jam. Among his best-known achievements was the discovery of a demo tape by a then-unknown Mariah Carey. Mottola signed the singer and helped launch her towards super-stardom. They also became a celebrity couple and, despite a 20 year age gap, Mottola and Carey were wed in 1993, divorcing five years later. Mottola tied the knot again with Mexican sex symbol, the singer Thalia, in 2000. One of pop music's biggest hitters, Mottola founded and ran Champion Entertainment in the 80s. After Sony's acquisition of CBS Records in 1988, Mottola took the Sony helm and guided the company through some of its most profitable years. But latterly, the company's profits have been hit by the slump in music sales. Last year, Mottola was attacked in public by Sony artist Michael Jackson who claimed the company failed to properly promote his album Invincible, and accused Mottola of being a racist, calling him "the devil." Performance ' Here Comes the Sun ' Travis STAR STUDDED UK POP CERMONY HONOURS MUSIC WINNERS The first ever Top of the Pops Awards ceremony honoured some of the hottest names in music on Friday. The UK's long running TV chart show tempted a host of stars and thousands of fans to the Manchester event. Celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Kylie Minogue, Westlife, Travis, Nelly Furtado, Wyclef Jean, Mel B, Tom Jones and Natalie Imbruglia headed for the Manchester Evening News Arena for the ceremony. As with the VH1 music awards in Los Angeles, the stars paid tribute to late Beatle George Harrison during the British ceremony. Scottish indie band Travis performed an acoustic version of 'Here Comes The Sun', in front of the 12 thousand strong crowd. Travis performed the song after going onto the stage to accept the award for Top Album for their The Invisible Band collection. SIR PAUL McCARTNEY had also been due to attend the event, but pulled out saying he felt it would be inappropriate. He had planned to perform his single 'Freedom' and accept his award as the first entrant into the Top of the Pops Hall of Fame. Instead, the former Beatle sent a message dedicating the honour to his 'brother' Harrison. Award host Jamie Theakston read the statement "It was a great honor to receive this Top Of The Pops Award but because of the sad news I can't be here tonight to accept it. I'd like to dedicate this award with love to my brother George, without whom it all would not have been possible." Despite the sadness of many stars who spoke fondly of Harrison, the event was a celebration, honouring the world's most popular acts.
