Bill Moyers Did you dream? Maya Angelou Yes. Bill Moyers What? Maya Angelou Well, at eight, I dreamed once that I've refined in the number of years. Once I found I'd go to the movies, and I saw people like Shirley Temple and Judy- somebody. Bill Moyers Garland. Oh, gee whiz, yes. Maya Angelo And the Bill Moyers The Wizard of Oz. Maya Angelou Yes. Now that- not Judy Garland. Bill Moyers Oh. Maya Angelou But anyways, those young girls who were in the movies at the time, one is not a plumber on television. She does a plumbing kind of Bill Moyers Upward, downward mobility. Maya Angelou Anyway, I saw them and I thought, you know, they live such rich lives. Maybe what'll happen is maybe I'm really a white girl. And what's going to happen is I'm going to wake up, I'm going to have long blonde hair. And everybody's gonna just go around loving me and sending me off to school. And I would wait at the at the ranch gate for Johnny Mack Brown. And with a little bonnet on. Tragic.

Various of clouds over the sun at the end of the afternoon 13. Various of temple STORYLINE Thousands of people gathered at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza on the Mexican peninsula of Yucatan on Tuesday to celebrate autumn equinox. An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. Visitors turned out to watch a serpent-shaped shadow slither down the Temple of Kukulkan, the Feathered Serpent God, at daybreak. Some were sitting, some were standing, some singing but all admired the visual effect the sun had on the pyramid. The temple is considered a Toltec-Maya architectural masterpiece. Maya experts who have studied its structure believe it was connected with sun worship. During autumn and spring, the sunlight causes seven triangles to form a serpent-shaped shadow down the structure's main stairway which then meets a stone snake-head carved at the bottom. The square-based, stepped pyramid is approximately 75 feet (22.8 metres) tall. Researchers believe it was built for astronomical purposes. UNESCO, the United Nation's educational and cultural body, has included the temple in a list of seven wonders of the modern world for the last seven years, Jorge Esma Baza, a local official said. A Chilean tourist William Latsky said he couldn't "stop admiring the creative side, the astrological knowledge, the intelligence of our ancestors, the Mayas". The serpent-shaped shadow disappeared later on Wednesday as clouds covered the afternoon sun.

Sun's rays appearing through temple STORYLINE: Tourists and local residents visited the Maya archaeological site of Dizibilchaltun, Mexico, on Thursday morning to watch the sun rising over an ancient temple, marking the beginning of the autumn equinox. For approximately 30 minutes, the sun shone through the main gate of the 1,500-year-old Templo de las Siete Mu?ecas (Temple of the Seven Dolls), on the Yucatan peninsula, bordering Guatemala. This event occurs twice a year, once during the spring equinox on March 20, and again during the autumn equinox on September 23, but it can be witnessed for about five days before, and five days after, the equinox itself. According to Maya tradition, the sun god At Kin arrives at the autumn equinox, to make an early announcement of the upcoming harvest season. About 300 visitors gathered to watch this year's sunrise. Local architect Ana Escalante said the precision used in the construction of the temple was impressive. "If the Mayas were able to design this, without computers and all the tools we have today, what could we accomplish with the tools we have today if we wanted?" she said. Dizibilchaltun is located 8 miles (approximately 13 kilometres) from the colonial city of Merida. Its name means "where there is writing on flat stones" - a reference to the inscriptions on the memorial stones found at the site. INTERVIEW CONTINUES: David Susskind This is the food. This is the food of Hare Krishna. what is it? Rukmini Different things. This is different preparations that we prepared our temple offer to Krishna. This is called poppadoms. And these are simply wonderful is named by our spiritual master. He said he said you eat them and you will become wonderful. And this is a vegetable called Why don't you try some very delicious David Susskind okay that's lovely. Yeah. Rukmini Take something else. David Susskind I don't want to overdo it as this. You eat this stuff all the time? Rukmini On Sunday we have a special feast at our center in every city all over the world. There's a beautiful love feast. It's called and we distribute this for shah David Susskind This is what you'd have on a wedding feast or something Rukmini Yeah, Sunday we're having a beautiful wedding and David Susskind I'd love to but I have a previous booking. Tell me how do you live? What's your day? Like? When do you get up in the morning Rukmini very early? Because we get up I get up at three in the morning. David Susskind Why Rukmini different people different times. But that's our spiritual masters instructed us Prabhupada that that's the best time for self realization. David Susskind Three o'clock in the morning? Bhadra Raj Das Actually happiness to be awake. If you if you said so many things. David Susskind How do you get up at three? Is your body's wake up? Jia Adoyta Das The body can be adjusted. It's practice David Susskind This is simply wonderful as you get up at three o'clock in the morning, right? And the whole city's dark. what do you do Kalindi We chant Hare Krishna David Susskind at three o'clock in the morning you chant? Kalindi Well, first we bathe and then we chat. We go to the temple immediately. David Susskind You bathe first, Kalindi we bathe first. David Susskind How many times a day do you bathe Kalindi twice a day. David Susskind Sort of a cleaning finish. Kalindi The cleanliness is next to godliness. David Susskind leave yourself open for those and then you you get up and you take a bath and then you eat some of this do you Rukmini well after a while but we have a very beautiful program at each of our temples. David Susskind You go to the temple right away. Rukmini Yeah, we have a ceremony called Arati which is worshiping the Lord. Aratic means to receive the Lord. So we all chant this Arati ceremony and play nice instruments like this harmonium Matranga the drums you saw in nice cartels very beautiful. Very early in the morning Rupa Anuga And we study. We are very nice books literature's the Krishna book, the Srimad Bhagavatam. We study the past times of God. This is a specific contribution of our movement that we are explaining to the world. What God looks like, what he was doing, was associate saw, what does he look like? David Susskind what does he look like? What does God look like? He's light and ducks. Yoga Maya Dasi That's the spiritual world. We have descriptions in our literature of the spiritual world. David Susskind And who are his associates, animals and flowers Rupa Anuga all the spirit devotees. Mostly he has a family. You see, everything of this material world is a reflection of the spiritual world. The Supreme Personality of Godhead has a mother or father. He has a brother. He has friends servants. Everything that we see here is simply a reflection of that. It's temporary. That's why the love of this material world temporary. Actual love means what I am. Continuous David Susskind Why? Why do you have to get up at three in the morning? Mongo Maya Das Well those hours are called the most auspicious hours of the day. You know the best hours are the most conducive for a spiritual realization David Susskind what time you go to sleep Mongo Maya Das 9:30 David Susskind 9:30 at night, Rupa Anuga we don't even like to go to sleep. They're the greatest remasters in our line used to forget to go to sleep. There was so much love of Krishna. They forget to eat sometimes. We're so busy in the material world trying to sleep we think sleep as recreation but we think sleeping is death want to be awake, wide awake and conscious of Krishna all the time Yoga Suara Das Therefore this chatting in the street people are asleep. We're trying to wake them up David Susskind when you you don't eat. Rukmini Take some more. David Susskind No, no. I mean, it's delicious. But I'm full I think that throw me from it. Oh, what do you you don't eat meat? No, you're vegetarians, Mongo Maya Das only vegetable foodstuffs. Krishna says the Bhagavad Gita offer me a leaf, some fruit, some water. David Susskind But you also don't have fish Mongo Maya Das no fish either. Krishna says If you offer these foodstuffs to me with love, he says I will accept it. And so that's why this food stuff is call prasada. Prasada means mercy of the Lord. Because Krishna says anyone who, who eats something without offering it to me, first person is a thief. So we offer the food to Krishna first, and then he takes not that he needs it. But we offer to him with the love. And then we take the ruminants. David Susskind You also have no stimulants or intoxicants. Mongo Maya Das No if you're chanting Hare Krishna, that's the highest. It's the highest. Love of God David Susskind You will forget whiskey and all that. But what about tea and coffee? Mongo Maya Das That's also intoxicant. You know, pick me up. Jia Adoyta Das What's the value? David Susskind Would you have a Coca Cola? Jia Adoyta Das What's the How does it add to our God consciousness? That's our criteria for doing anything. Chanting Hare Krishna adds to our consciousness. Rukmini simply wonderful. Don't even desire it. That's, that's the philosophy that by experiencing a higher taste, you forget about the lower taste. So we've all given up smoking cigarettes, so many things, because we're tasting something sweeter. Rupa Anuga We're not We're not giving up the world. We're not ascetics. We simply are developing higher taste. So we can give up these things. You see if I said you stop smoking, David, now you stop. Alright, you say, all right. No, I'll stop smoking today. And never again. But what's going to happen within a week or two, that just maybe change a brand, which will be smoking. But if you develop a higher taste, you have no desire to smoke. So we have no desire to eat meat. We have no desire to smoke cigarettes, we have the desire for these things because David Susskind Do you have any desire. Rupa Anuga Yes, desires are always fulfilled. Because our desires are fulfilled by Krishna directly, not indirectly. We don't want to have indirect relationship with God. We want to be fully conscious of God. And say David Susskind Did God in any way say don't eat the fish or don't eat meat. Kalindi Jesus Christ said Thou shalt not kill the commandment. But we have said we we've said we shouldn't kill people. But why should we kill animals? Bhagavad Das How can you have a nice plate like this and a cow here? What would you do? Would you kill the cow? David Susskind I go right to the cow. For the milk Rupa Anuga We don't have to kill the cow to take the milk. Why Cause the animal pain? Why do you have to chop a tree down to get the apple? No, you can take the fruit the gods providing is providing this light even. It's providing everything we were taking David Susskind that's Con Edison Rupa Anuga It's coming from the sun, the sun's coming from Krishna. It's all coming from Krishna. Everything is emanating from Krishna. So all we're doing one little trick we've learned to be happy that we accept joyfully we accept because it's Krishna's mercy. But we give back. Because it's his Yoga Suara Das That's a very interesting example that you just gave when you say that this light is coming from Con Edison. That's the point of this movement to change the vision which people have from one of material consciousness or conscious of simply what their senses are dictating to them to one which is tempered by knowledge coming down through the line of teachers of spiritual masters Rupa Anuga Now, as we say, we know what the Sun is made of. Right, David, right here on this earth planet. There's all the ingredients for the sun, right? So why don't we make one little tiny one just to float over the New York area and light up the night? Because we don't really want David Susskind Back to the dish with stuff with Kalindi Because you are what you eat. David Susskind You are what you eat. I've read that Kalindi So this is spiritual food stuff. So simply by taking spiritual food stuff. David Susskind Would that be a typical dinner on Sunday? Kalindi Because during the week we eat very simply David Susskind that's a feast. Rupa Anuga Yes, isn't it? Rukmini Take some vegetables David Susskind Oh, no. We'll be back. We'll be back in a minute.
