Blood moon above Mayan pyramid
Animated time-lapse sequence of a blood moon setting behind the ancient Mayan pyramid, Kukulkan, at Chichen Itza, Yucatan. The night sky is punctuated by bright streaks from shooting stars and the lights of passing jets. Blood moons occur during total lunar eclipses like the one that was visible from the Yucatan and most of North America on November 8, 2022. The copper-red color of a blood moon occurs when direct sunlight is totally blocked by the Earth, and the only light reaching the moon is that which is refracted and filtered by the Earth's atmosphere in such a way that red wavelengths become more visible than blue. The optical phenomenon behind blood moons is referred to as Rayleigh scattering which is also responsible for the red sunrises and sunsets we see on Earth. To the Maya, eclipses, both lunar and solar, could be portents of doom and were sometimes associated with bloodletting and human sacrifice

The two brothers were among hundreds who turned out at London's Banqueting House for the Act Now Kosovo charity dinner and star studded concert, to raise money for UNICEF. After dinner the audience was treated to a musical extravaganza including performances by Midge Ure, Nigel Kennedy and Des'ree. Also appearing on stage were UNICEF ambassador, Roger Moore, giving his own personal account of his recent visit to Kosovo as well as Ralph and Joseph Fiennes who were speaking about the crisis. The fundraising evening, attended by other such famous faces of the fashion world as Naomi Campbell, Sophie Anderton and Marie Helvin, also included an auction offering an array of items such as a watercolour footprint of ballerina Darcey Bussell, a weekend for six people aboard a luxury yacht in the Aegean and various paintings. Ralph and Joseph Fiennes linked up with their songwriter brother Magnus and his Macedonian wife Maya to form the committee which organised tonight's extravaganza. Magnus and Maya performed together with Roger Moore's son Geoffrey in a band called Odessa which also included Nigel Kennedy. During the evening a special video by Midge Ure for his song "Dear God" dedicated to the children of Kosovo was shown for the first time. Mingling amongst the guests before the concert was Roger Moore accompanied by his wife and daughter. Of his visit to Macedonia, he said: "One lasting impression I have was when a young refugee, which I thought was a boy, turned out to be a girl. Her father had shaved her head because he was petrified she would be raped." The charity has launched a #41 million (pound) appeal which will help finance everything from essential health care and education to raising awareness of the dangers of land mines and providing people with help on their return journeys to their villages. UNICEF is already working in Bosnia, Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro, providing urgently needed supplies, medical care, trauma counselling and vital help in re-uniting families separated by the confusion of war. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA HONORS 2015 WNBA CHAMPIONS MINNESOTA LYNX
Monday, June 27, 2016 President Obama's remarks to the WNBA Champion Minnesota Lynx DC Slug: 1640 WH WNBA STIX FS37 79 AR: 16X9 THE PRESIDENT: Hello! (Applause.) Everybody, have a seat. Everybody, have a seat. Oliver is upset -- (laughter) -- that Mom is up here and he's not. Now, if you want to bring Oliver up here, that's fine. Coach, what do you think? Come on. Yes, come on. There you go. Look, he's got his little suit on and everything. (Laughter.) Look at him -- got the bowtie. COACH REEVE: Say hi to Mr. President. THE PRESIDENT: Hi. High five? (Applause.) There you go. All right, now that we've got that settled. (Laughter.) 16:43:06 Good afternoon, everybody. Give it up for the 2015 WNBA champion the Minnesota Lynx! (Applause.) So this is this team's third visit to the White House in the past five years. So I guess I should ask: "Whose house?" (Laughter.) COACH REEVE: Our house! THE PRESIDENT: Our house! We have some Lynx fans in the house, including your outstanding Senator, Amy Klobuchar. (Applause.) WNBA President Lisa Borders is here. (Applause.) Welcome back to Coach Cheryl Reeve -- third title with the Lynx. (Applause.) You get a sense she's feeling greedy, though. She wants more. (Laughter.) When the Lynx won it all, with banners going up, champagne popping, she looked around and said, "This never gets old." This never gets old. And you can see by the way they're playing this year that it has not gotten old for any of the players either. 16:44:26 I want to take a moment to recognize somebody who I know would have loved to have been in this moment -- Flip Saunders -- who was a huge part of Minnesota basketball at all levels and a supporter of this team. Obviously he experienced a tragic illness. And so on behalf of all basketball fans, this day, too, is "For Flip." And we want to give him a big round of applause. (Applause.) So I think it's fair to say this team is a powerhouse. (Laughter.) You got Maya Moore, Lindsay Whalen, Seimone Augustus -- recently named among the top 20 players in WNBA history. (Applause.) Seems like you all should have more than three -- (laughter) - 16:45:27 when you got that much talent. Oh, oh, I got you. (Laughter.) All right, you just wanted this moment in the sun. (Laughter.) Now, this isn't to say t's always easy. Last year, these women faced down midseason roster shake-ups and multiple injuries -- (baby cries) -- I know, it was frustrating -- (laughter) -- and a championship game that started a little bleak. Lindsay sprained her ankle. Maya was trying to find her rhythm. But in the second half, the Lynx started to gain some steam. Seimone finished with 16 points. Sylvia Fowles had 20. They pulled away and won the championship by 17 points. It was their first championship at home, in front of their loyal Minnesota fans. And as Maya put it, "It wasn't a perfect year, a perfect series, or a perfect game.but we are the champions." And that's what matters. (Applause.) 16:46:25 They did manage to have a pretty close to perfect victory party, though. After the game, the Lynx drove out to Paisley Park for a private concert by one of their biggest fans -- Prince -- which was pretty cool, and reminds us of how much we miss him. In fact, the last time I saw him he was on this stage at a really good party. (Laughter.) These women are not just all-star basketball players, they're also leaders in the Minneapolis community. They host an annual Breast Health Awareness game in partnership with the Mayo Clinic. They made holiday cards for children of military members, teamed up with the Twin Cities Boys and Girls Club to help prepare meals for kids who would otherwise go hungry. And the team signed honorary contracts with young boys and girls who are facing big challenges, but dream of playing basketball. For a day, those young people were Lynx teammates -- and that, as much as any trophy, is what makes these women champions. So on the 20th anniversary of the WNBA, this is a good moment to celebrate all that these players and the many others who came before have accomplished. Twenty years ago, Maya, Seimone, and Lindsay were playing H-O-R-S-E in their driveway. And suddenly, they saw players like Lisa Leslie and Sheryl Swoopes and Sue Bird to look up to as role models. And there's no discounting how important that is. Today, these women, and women across the WNBA, are setting their own outstanding example for girls who are growing up today. And they're aware of the responsibilities that come with that. As Maya says, "We're not super rich like the guys.but 16:48:12 money's not everything when you're talking about dynasties and legacies, and inspiring young women and men, and opening people's minds." Although, money is useful, too. (Laughter.) And I am for equal pay for equal work. (Applause.) With that, I know Lindsay would like to say a few more words. 16:48:41 Let's give a big White House congratulations once again to the Minnesota Lynx, 2015 WMBA Champions. (Applause.) END 4:50 P.M. EDT

Woman dressed like tree performing dance 23. Man painted in blue playing pre-hispanic instruments STORYLINE Thousands of pilgrims dressed in white climbed the towering Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico on Friday to celebrate the spring equinox in an annual ceremony which dates back to pre-hispanic times. The pyramids are located in Teotihuacan, a sprawling pre-Hispanic ghost town 30 miles (50 kilometres) north of Mexico City. People from across the country make an annual pilgrimage to the ruins to celebrate the first day of spring, climbing the tallest structure, the Pyramid of the Sun, and throwing their arms skyward. Others stream to the Moon Pyramid, which is not as high but is older. The pilgrims believe the pyramids hold a special energy on the equinox that can be transmitted to people, especially those who dress in white. Pilgrim Virginia Zamora stressed that it is also a time when people can absorb the energy for the good of others, as well. "It's when we ask our Father to illuminate us with His sun, for all humanity, for those who suffer, for those who are sick, which many times are negative things that are caused by bad thinking transmitted by other people," she said. Teotihuacan emerged about two centuries before the birth of Christ and was home to as many as 200-thousand people at its peak. The pyramids once formed part of a city the size of ancient Athens or Rome which served as the primary centre of learning in the Americas for over a millennium. But the city began declining sharply around 650, and was almost completely abandoned by 750 for unknown reasons. The equinox also is an important event at Chichen Itza, the Mayan ruins on the Yucatan Peninsula. There, thousands turned out to watch a serpent-shaped shadow slither down the Temple of Kulkulkan (The Feathered Serpent God) at daybreak The ruins are best known for the Temple of Kulkulkan, considered a Toltec-Maya architectural masterpiece. Maya experts who have studied its structure believe it was connected with the worshiping of the sun. During autumn and spring, the sunlight causes seven triangles to form a serpent-shaped shadow down the structure's main stairway which then meets a stone snake-head carved at the bottom. The square-based, stepped pyramid is approximately 75 feet tall. Researchers believe it was built for astronomical purposes.
