ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: CHINESE MODEL COMP
TAPE_NUMBER: EN9928 IN_TIME: 10:37:09 LENGTH: 04:45 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: FEED: SCRIPT: xfa SEARCH IS ON FOR A VERY SPECIAL CHINA GIRL STORY: CHINESE MODEL STORY LOCATION: BEIJING DATE: 6 JULY 1999 The world of catwalks and haute couture fashion is not one that you would normally associate with China. But as the red nation moves slowly towards opening its borders to business with the West, selling style to the good people of Beijing is high on the minds on Western fashion people. And if you are going to sell high fashion to Chinese, then you need Chinese supermodels. CLAUDIA SCHIFFER and NAOMI CAMPBELL are all very well, but Chinese women need models they can relate to. That is why the ELITE model agency could be found in Beijing last week. The world renowned home to many supermodels, like Claudia and Naomi, had teamed up with make-up manufacturer Maybelline to find a few Chinese supermodels. The agency has spent years scouring other parts of the world for its annual 'Elite Model Look' competition. The winners are guaranteed a fast track entry into the world of high glamour, jet setting around the world to catwalk shows. Now the search has moved to Beijing where over 12,000 girls from all over China had applied for the chance to join the Elite elite. JOHN CASABLANCAS, founder and president of Elite, was on hand to judge the girls who were put through a grueling schedule where they had to prove their prowess on the catwalk in designer gear, casual clothes and, naturally enough, swimsuits. They were also questioned by a selection of local Chinese businessman who were checking for personality. They were also given written tests and tests on their clothing and sewing skills. Elite may have been searching for Chinese talent but the girls did have to fit into the standardised Western concept of catwalk beauty - they were all slim and unusually tall for Chinese women. Among the hopefuls was LI YE, a 20 year old student from Beijing and 1.77 metres tall. Li Ye is a fashion student at the Beijing Clothing Technology Institute but would happily swap her studies for the chance of a catwalk career. This was her second modelling competition. In April she was placed fifth in the China Top Ten Model Contest. Sadly however she failed to pick up their glittering prize at Elite. That went to Zhao Jun, number 44, who hails from Shanghai and stands 1.79 metres tall. In September she will travel to Nice, France to represent China to compete with other winners from Elite competitions around the world. THANK YOU. 11:08:03 THANK YOU. THANK YOU. 11:08:06 THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THIS IS FUN. 11:08:10 WELL, WE HOPE SO. BUT YOU'VE GONE THROUGH A LITTLE 11:08:14 BIT OF A BEATING THE LAST MONTH. DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT BEING 11:08:19 ON A SHOW WITH FIVE WOMEN WHO NEVER SHUT UP IS GOING TO BE 11:08:23 CALMING? LOOK. 11:08:25 I WAS TRYING TO FIND A SHOW THAT MICHELLE ACTUALLY WATCHED. 11:08:30 [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] THIS IS IT. 11:08:32 THIS IS IT RIGHT HERE. ALL THOSE NEW SHE'S, SHE'S LIKE 11:08:40 LET ME GET THE CLIQUER. HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED US? 11:08:44 OF COURSE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME I'VE 11:08:46 BEEN ON NOW. THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO 11:08:49 WATCH IT. THE FIRST TIME. 11:08:51 THE FIRST TIME I WASN'T. BUT I HEARD. 11:08:54 THE BOOK FIRST, THEN WHEN YOU WERE ROUNGE AND NOW AS PRESIDENT 11:08:58 OF THE UNITED STATES. [APPLAUSE] 11:09:01 VERY BUSY. I WAS EXPLAINING THAT THESE 11:09:04 COUCHES ARE MADE FOR THESE LITTLE PEOPLE. 11:09:09 IF YOU'RE A LITTLE TALLER, YOU KIND OF HAVE TO SETTLE IN A 11:09:13 LITTLE BIT MORE. YOU LOOK SETTLED. 11:09:17 WE SAID THIS HAS BEEN A KIND OF DIFFICULT TIME FOR YOU, 11:09:21 BETWEEN THE OIL AND QUESTIONS OF RACISM AND AFGHANISTAN AND A FEW 11:09:24 OTHER LITTLE THINGS. WE UNDERSTAND YOU SIT AT NIGHT 11:09:26 WITH YOUR DAUGHTERS AND YOUR WIFE AND YOU DO THE ROSE AND THE 11:09:28 THORN? DO YOU STILL DO IT? 11:09:31 WE STILL DO IT. ALTHOUGH MALIA IS NOW AT CAMP 11:09:34 AND SASHA IS AWAY AT A FRIEND'S HOUSE. 11:09:37 SO IT'S JUST ME AND MICHELLE. WE'LL DO IT FOR YOU. 11:09:40 GO AHEAD. IN THE LAST MONTH, WHAT HAS 11:09:42 BEEN THE ROSE AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE THORN? 11:09:44 WELL, IN THE LAST MONTH, THE ROSE HAS TO BE A COUPLE OF DAYS 11:09:49 WE TOOK IN MAINE WITH MICHELLE AND SASHA AND MALIA. 11:09:55 WE WENT ON BIKE RIDES AND HIKES. YOU KNOW, THE GIRLS ARE GETTING 11:10:00 OLD ENOUGH NOW WHERE THEY'RE NOT QUITE TEENAGERS YET, SO THEY 11:10:04 STILL LIKE YOU. [LAUGHTER] 11:10:07 BUT THEY'RE FULL OF OPINIONS AND IDEAS AND OBSERVATIONS AND IT'S 11:10:11 JUST A GREAT AGE. MALIA JUST TURNED 12 AND SASHA 11:10:13 JUST TURNED 9. AND IT COULDN'T HAVE BEEN A 11:10:16 BETTER COUPLE OF DAYS. THORN? 11:10:19 WHERE DO I AGAIN HERE? NO, LOOK. 11:10:24 OBVIOUSLY, THE COUNTRY HAS GONE THROUGH A TOUGH STRETCH SINCE I 11:10:29 TOOK OFFICE. WHEN I WAS SWORN IN -- I KNOW 11:10:31 YOU SHOWED THE INAUGURATION. WE WERE LOSING AT THAT TIME 11:10:36 750,000 JOBS PER MONTH. THE ECONOMY WAS SHRINKING AT A 11:10:41 PACE OF ABOUT 6.5%, WHICH IS UNHEARD OF SINCE THE GREAT 11:10:48 DEPRESSION. AND SO THE LAST 20 MONTHS HAS 11:10:51 BEEN A NONSTOP EFFORT TO RESTART THE ECONOMY, TO STABILIZE THE 11:10:56 FINANCIAL SYSTEM, TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE CREATING JOBS AGAIN 11:11:00 INSTEAD OF LOSING THEM. AND IN THE MIDST OF ALL THAT, 11:11:03 WE'VE ALSO HAD THE OIL SPILL, WE'VE ALSO HAD TWO WARS, WE'VE 11:11:08 ALSO HAD A PANDEMIC, H 1 N 16R7B, THAT WE HAD TO MANAGE AND 11:11:14 A WHOLE HOST OF OTHER ISSUES. WHAT HAS BEEN GRATIFYING IS THE 11:11:18 FACT THAT THE ECONOMY NOW IS STARTING TO STABILIZE AND GROW 11:11:23 AGAIN AND WHAT'S BEEN SATISFYING IS JUST SEEING HOW RESILIENT THE 11:11:26 AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE. AS MUCH AS YOU SAID IT'S BEEN 11:11:31 TOUGH FOR ME, THE TRUTH IS IT'S NOT TOUGH FOR ME. 11:11:33 I MEAN, YOU KNOW, I'VE GOT PEOPLE, PUNDITS ON THE NEWS WHO 11:11:39 MAY SAY THINGS ABOUT ME. YOU NOTICED. 11:11:42 OF COURSE. BUT YOU THINK WHAT THE AMERICAN 11:11:44 PEOPLE HAVE GONE THROUGH. LOSING JOBS, SEEING THEIR HOME 11:11:47 VALUES GO DOWN, THEIR 401-K'S DECLINING. 11:11:54 THOSE ARE THE FOLKS I DRAW INSPIRATION FROM BECAUSE I GET 11:11:57 LETTERS FROM THEM EVERY NIGHT AND I READ THEM. 11:11:59 AS TOUGH AS IT'S BEEN, THEY REMAIN HOPEFUL AND OPTIMISTIC 11:12:03 ABOUT AMERICA. SO I DON'T SPEND A LOT OF TIME 11:12:06 WORRYING ABOUT ME. I SPEND A LOT OF TIME WORRYING 11:12:08 ABOUT THEM. THE ONE THORN, THE BIGGEST 11:12:10 THORN THIS PAST MONTH? WELL, YOU KNOW, THE REASON 11:12:17 IT'S HARD TO ANSWER IS THE THINGS THAT THE MEDIA MAY FOCUS 11:12:21 ON ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE THINGS I FOCUS ON. 11:12:24 I HAVE TO SIGN LETTERS TO PARENTS OF CHILDREN WHO HAVE 11:12:28 BEEN KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN OR THE HUSBANDS OR WIVES ARE PEOPLE 11:12:32 WHO HAVE BEEN KILLED IN BATTLE, AND THAT GIVES YOU A SENSE OF 11:12:37 PERSPECTIVE THAT IS JUST DIFFERENT FROM WHAT IS GOING ON 11:12:40 ON CABLE TV ON ANY GIVEN DAY. CAN I FOLLOW UP ON SOMETHING? 11:12:44 BECAUSE YOU'VE REALLY DONE A LOT, I THINK. 11:12:46 YOU'VE SIGNED 200 PLUS LAWS SINCE YOU'RE IN OFFICE. 11:12:50 FINANCIAL REFORM HAS TAKEN PLACE. 11:12:53 YOU'VE GOT HEALTH CARE. TWO WOMEN ON THE SUPREME COURT. 11:12:58 AND YET THE RIGHT WING, THROUGH FOX NEWS AND OTHER OUTLETS, SEEM 11:13:02 TO BE HIJACKING THE NARRATIVE. WHERE ON YOUR SIDE IS THE 11:13:07 NARRATIVE? WHERE IS YOUR ATTACK DOG TO COME 11:13:10 OUT AND TELL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, LISTEN, THIS IS WHAT WE 11:13:13 DID? JOY, THAT'S YOUR JOB. 11:13:16 [APPLAUSE] I DO IT. 11:13:21 NO. LET ME SAY THIS. 11:13:28 WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH, AS THEY HAVE BEEN, NATURALLY, THERE'S 11:13:32 GOING TO BE A POLITICAL ARGUMENT THAT'S GOING ON OUT THERE. 11:13:38 AND I VOLUNTEERED FOR THIS JOB. AND POLITICS IS NOT BEANBAG. 11:13:47 IT'S A CONTACT SPORT. YOU EXPECT PEOPLE GOING AT YOU. 11:13:51 THE ONE THING THAT DOES FRUSTRATE ME SOMETIMES IS THE 11:13:53 SENSE THAT WE SHOULDN'T BE CAMPAIGNING ALL THE TIME. 11:13:56 THERE IS A TIME TO CAMPAIGN. AND THEN THERE IS A TIME TO 11:14:01 GOVERN. WHAT WE'VE TRIED TO DO OVER THE 11:14:03 LAST 20 MONTHS IS TO GOVERN. ON HEALTH CARE OR FINANCIAL 11:14:07 REFORM, RIGHT NOW WE HAVE A BIG DEBATE ABOUT HOW TO GET SMALL 11:14:12 BUSINESSES MORE CREDIT BECAUSE THEY GENERATE THE JOBS. 11:14:14 WHEN YOU FEEL AS IF EVERY SINGLE INITIATIVE THAT WE'RE DOING IS 11:14:19 SUBJECT TO WASHINGTON POLITICS INSTEAD OF IS THIS GOOD FOR THE 11:14:23 COUNTRY, THAT CAN BE FRUSTRATING. 11:14:25 BUT HAVING SAID THAT, LOOK, THERE ARE LEGITIMATE DIFFERENCES 11:14:28 TO BE HAD BETWEEN THE PARTIES. I'M NOT PERFECT. 11:14:31 MY ADMINISTRATION IS NOT PERFECT. 11:14:34 AND A LOT OF THIS CRITICISM I TRY TO LISTEN TO AND, IF I THINK 11:14:36 IT'S FAIR, THEN WE TRY TO CORRECT IT. 11:14:40 NOW, SOME OF IT, I'LL GRANT YOU, JOY, I TEND TO THINK NOT IS 11:14:43 FAIR. MICHELLE DOESN'T THINK ANY OF IT 11:14:46 IS FAIR. I WANT TO ASK YOU ABOUT THE 11:14:48 COUNTRY, TOO. SEEING YOU HERE, IT TRULY IS AN 11:14:50 HONOR TO HAVE YOU HERE AS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. 11:14:52 THANK YOU. IT DOES SEEM AS THOUGH WE ARE 11:14:56 A VERY DIVIDED STATES OF AMERICA ON SO MANY ISSUES. 11:14:59 EVEN THOSE WHO DIDN'T VOTE FOR YOU FELT A HOPE THERE WOULD BE A 11:15:04 UNITING FACTOR WHEN YOU TOOK OFFICE. 11:15:06 ARE YOU FRUSTRATED THAT THIS COUNTRY STILL FEELS SO DIVIDED 11:15:08 AND YOU HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE YET TO BRING -- 11:15:11 I AM. -- THAT UNITY? 11:15:13 RIGHT AFTER THE ELECTION, THERE WAS A SENSE OF HOPEFULNESS 11:15:17 AND UNITY. I THINK AT THE TIME PEOPLE 11:15:19 DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HOW BAD THE ECONOMIC CRISIS WAS GOING TO BE. 11:15:23 AND AS A CONSEQUENCE, I THINK THAT THE POLITICS OF THE 11:15:30 ECONOMIC RECOVERY, THE STEPS WE HAD TO TAKE TO MAKE SURE THAT 11:15:33 THE BANKING SYSTEM DIDN'T COLLAPSE, WHAT WE HAD TO DO FOR 11:15:37 THE AUTO INDUSTRY TO THAT DIDN'T COLLAPSE, A LOT OF THOSE BECAME 11:15:42 CONTROVERSIAL. UNFORTUNATELY, WE LIVE AT A TIME 11:15:45 WHEN A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT THE NEXT ELECTION 11:15:49 INSTEAD OF THE NEXT GENERATION. MY HOPE IS THAT I'VE TRIED TO 11:15:53 SET A TONE IN THE DEBATE THAT SAYS, LOOK, WE CAN DISAGREE 11:15:57 WITHOUT BEING DISAGREEABLE. BUT THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS 11:16:02 THAT THE MEDIA CULTURE RIGHT NOW LOVES CONFLICT. 11:16:07 AND IF THERE IS A STORY ABOUT COOPERATION BETWEEN THE TWO 11:16:11 PARTIES, THAT STORY DOESN'T MAKE THE NEWS. 11:16:13 WHAT MAKES THE NEWS IS SOMEBODY WHO SAYS SOMETHING AS OUTLANDISH 11:16:17 OR OUTRAGEOUS AS POSSIBLE. I THINK, FRANKLY, THE AMERICAN 11:16:20 PEOPLE WOULD RATHER HEAR A CIVIL DEBATE. 11:16:24 BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT THEY'RE GETTING A LOT OF TIMES. 11:16:26 MR. PRESIDENT, WE HAD SHIRLEY SHERROD, THE USDA OFFICIAL WHO 11:16:30 WAS FIRED OFFER THIS RACIALLY CHARGED CLIP THAT WAS TAKEN OUT 11:16:34 OF CONTEST AND POSTED ON A BLOG. WHEN YOU TOOK OFFICE, I THINK A 11:16:37 LOT OF PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT WE WERE GOING TO GET BEYOND RACE. 11:16:39 BUT IT SEEMS LIKE EVERY SINGLE DAY IT'S SOMETHING RACIALLY 11:16:43 CHARGED. DO YOU THINK THAT WE ARE STILL 11:16:47 -- AMERICA IS RACIST? LOOK. 11:16:49 I THINK THAT WE HAVE MADE SO MUCH PROGRESS AND I HAD A 11:16:53 CONVERSATION WITH SHIRLEY SHERROD, WONDERFUL WOMAN. 11:16:56 SHE'S THE FIRST ONE TO ACKNOWLEDGE HOW MUCH PROGRESS 11:16:58 WE'VE MADE. THINK ABOUT HER HISTORY AND WHAT 11:17:00 SHE WENT THROUGH. HER FATHER BEING MURDERED. 11:17:04 THAT'S RIGHT. AND HER GROWING UP IN THE JIM 11:17:07 CROW SOUTH. NOW SHE'S ON THE PHONE TALKING 11:17:10 TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. 11:17:11 AND SHE HAD BEEN ON THE SOUTH LAWN FOR A CELEBRATION OF 11:17:14 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES JUST A COUPLE WEEKS EARLIER. 11:17:17 AND THAT'S A TESTAMENT TO THE PROGRESS THAT WE'VE MADE. 11:17:20 WHAT I DO THINK HAPPENED IN THAT SITUATION IS THAT A 24/7 MEDIA 11:17:26 CYCLE THAT'S ALWAYS LOOKING FOR CONTROVERSY AND OFTENTIMES 11:17:30 DOESN'T GET TO THE FACTS FIRST GENERATED A PHONY CONTROVERSY. 11:17:35 A LOT OF PEOPLE OVERREACTED, INCLUDING PEOPLE IN MY 11:17:39 ADMINISTRATION. AND PART OF THE LESSON THAT I 11:17:42 WANT EVERYBODY TO DRAW IS LET'S NOT ASSUME THE WORST OF OTHER 11:17:47 PEOPLE BUT LET'S ASSUME THE BEST. 11:17:51 LET'S MAKE SURE WE GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE WE ACT. 11:17:54 AND WHEN IT COMES TO RACE, LET'S ACKNOWLEDGE THAT, OF COURSE, 11:17:57 THERE'S STILL TENSIONS OUT THERE. 11:18:00 THERE'S STILL INEEK EQUALITIES OUT THERE. 11:18:02 THERE'S STILL DISCRIMINATION OUT THERE. 11:18:04 BUT WE'VE MADE PROGRESS. AND IF EACH OF US TAKE IT UPON 11:18:07 OURSELVES TO TREAT PEOPLE WITH FAIRNESS AND BE ABLE TO STAND IN 11:18:12 SOMEBODY ELSE'S SHOES AND SEE THROUGH THEIR EYES AND RELATE TO 11:18:15 WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM, THAT WE CAN MAKE MORE PROGRESS. 11:18:19 AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE NEXT GENERATION -- WHEN I TALK TO 11:18:22 MALIA AND SASHA'S FRIENDS, THEY HAVE HEALTHIER ATTITUDES AROUND 11:18:27 THESE ISSUES THAN OUR GENERATION DOES. 11:18:33 AND WE HAVE HEALTHIER ATTITUDES THAN PREVIOUS GENERATIONS DO. 11:18:37 THAT'S THE PROGRESS WE WANT TO KEEP MAKING. 11:18:39 THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO ASK YOU. 11:18:41 I'M SURE YOU'RE OLD ENOUGH TO REMEMBER THIS MOVIE. 11:18:44 BUT IN 1967, "GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER." 11:18:48 I WAS ONLY 6. I FIGURE. 11:18:51 [LAUGHTER] THE REST YOU REMEMBER VERY 11:18:55 WELL. I DO REMEMBER THE MOVIE. 11:18:57 DO YOU REMEMBER THIS? SIDNEY POITIER IS SMOOTH. 11:18:59 PLEASE. HE'S THE GREATEST EVER. 11:19:01 BUT HE SAYS TO HIS FATHER, YOU THINK OF YOURSELF AS A NEGRO MAN 11:19:09 AND I THINK OF MYSELF AS A MAN AND THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE. 11:19:13 IS THAT STILL RELEVANT TODAY? I ASK YOU, WHAT ARE WE? 11:19:18 WHO ARE WE? WELL, WE ARE AMERICANS. 11:19:23 WE SHARE COMMON HOPES. WE SHARE COMMON DREAMS. 11:19:26 WE SHARE COMMON ASPIRATIONS. WE'RE GOING THROUGH COMMON 11:19:30 STRUGGLES. THE FACT IS THAT EVERYBODY HERE 11:19:32 -- AND I LOOK AT THIS AUDIENCE AND IT'S REPRESENTATIVE OF THE 11:19:36 COUNTRY. EVERYBODY HERE IS CONNECTED IN 11:19:38 SOME FASHION. AND OUR SUCCESS AND OUR 11:19:42 CHILDREN'S' SUCCESS IS TIED UP TOGETHER. 11:19:46 AND SO I THINK MOST AMERICANS FEEL THAT WAY. 11:19:49 BUT WHAT IS STILL TRUE IS THAT THERE'S STILL KIND OF A 11:19:54 REPTILIAN SIDE OF OUR BRAIN THAT PART OF OUR BRAIN, IF SOMEBODY 11:20:00 LOOKS DIFFERENT OR SOUNDS DIFFERENT, THAT THERE'S A PART 11:20:04 OF US THAT IS CAUTIOUS. WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IS FIGHT 11:20:07 AGAINST THAT. THAT'S PART OF WHAT SHIRLEY 11:20:09 SHERROD WAS TRYING TO SAY IN THE SPEECH, IF YOU ACTUALLY READ THE 11:20:12 WHOLE SPEECH. SHE WAS ACKNOWLEDGING, I HAD MY 11:20:15 OWN BIASES BASED ON MY EXPERIENCES, BUT, IF I AM ABLE 11:20:19 TO LOOK INWARD AND REFLECT, THEN I CAN GET BEYOND MY BIASES AND 11:20:25 THAT'S AN EXERCISE ALL OF US HAVE TO UNDERGO DAY IN, DAY OUT. 11:20:28 IT'S A CONSTANT STRUGGLE AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT THERE'S 11:20:33 NOBODY IN AMERICA WHO DOESN'T HAVE TO AT SOME POINT THINK 11:20:36 ABOUT THEIR OWN RACIAL ATTITUDES. 11:20:39 BUT IF WE DO, THINK I THINK THERE IS NO REASON WE CAN'T 11:20:42 OVERCOME IT. TO FOLLOW UP ON WHOOPI'S 11:20:46 QUESTION, YOU DO NOT DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A BLACK PRESIDENT, 11:20:49 BUT THAT'S THE WAY YOU'RE DESCRIBED. 11:20:51 YOUR MOTHER WAS WHITE. WOULD IT BE HELPFUL, OR WHY 11:20:56 DON'T YOU SAY I'M NOT A BLACK PRESIDENT, I'M BIRACIAL? 11:20:59 WELL, YOU KNOW, WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND GOING THROUGH THE 11:21:06 IDENTITY CRISES THAT ANY TEENAGER GOES THROUGH -- I WROTE 11:21:09 A WHOLE BOOK ABOUT THIS. YES. 11:21:14 [APPLAUSE] WE ALL READ IT. 11:21:18 PART OF WHAT I REALIZED WAS THAT, IF THE WORLD SAW ME AS 11:21:26 AFRICAN AMERICAN, THEN THAT WASN'T SOMETHING THAT I NEEDED 11:21:28 TO RUN AWAY FROM. THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I COULD GO 11:21:32 AHEAD AND EMBRACE. AND THE INTERESTING THING ABOUT 11:21:34 THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN THIS COUNTRY IS THAT WE ARE 11:21:37 SORT OF A MONGREL PEOPLE. WE'RE ALL KIND OF MIXED UP. 11:21:41 YEAH. THAT'S ACTUALLY TRUE FOR 11:21:46 WHITE AMERICA AS WELL. BUT WE JUST KNOW MORE ABOUT IT. 11:21:51 YEAH. AND SO I'M LESS INTERESTED IN 11:21:55 HOW WE LABEL OURSELVES. I'M MORE INTERESTED IN HOW WE 11:21:58 TREAT EACH OTHER. AND IF WE'RE TREATING EACH OTHER 11:22:01 RIGHT, THEN I CAN BE AFRICAN AMERICAN, I CAN BE MULTIRACIAL, 11:22:06 I CAN YOU NAME IT. WHAT MATTERS IS AM I SHOWING 11:22:10 PEOPLE RESPECT? AM I CARING FOR OTHER PEOPLE? 11:22:13 [APPLAUSE] THAT'S I THINK THE MESSAGE WE 11:22:16 WANT TO SEND. IF YOU'RE NOT SICK OF US YET, 11:22:20 STICK AROUND AND WE'LL COME BACK. 11:22:27 [ Female Announcer ] SMOOTH SKIN? 11:22:28 [ Female Announcer ] 100% BABY-SMOOTH 11:22:30 PERFECTION HAS ARRIVED. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] 11:26:18 BECAUSE OF WHAT WE DID ON THIS DAY, IN THIS ELECTION, AT 11:26:22 THIS DEFINING MOMENT, CHANGE HAS COME TO AMERICA. 11:26:26 AMERICANS WHO SENT A MESSAGE TO THE WORLD THAT WE HAVE NEVER 11:26:30 BEEN JUST A COLLECTION OF INDIVIDUALS OR A COLLECTION OF 11:26:34 RED STATES AND BLUE STATES. WE ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE 11:26:39 UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] 11:26:44 WE ARE GLAD TO BE BACK WITH PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA. 11:26:47 LET'S TAKE CARE OF SOME BUSINESS. 11:26:49 CAN I JUST POINT OUT? I DON'T HAVE AS MUCH GRAY HERE 11:26:52 IN THAT CLIP. I NOTICED. 11:26:54 I WASN'T GOING TO BRING IT UP. THE PRESIDENCY AGES EVERYONE, 11:26:59 I NOTICE. BUT BLACK DOESN'T CRACK. 11:27:03 [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] I'M GOING TO GET TO SOMETHING 11:27:07 -- BUT IT TURNS GRAY. 11:27:09 -- IMPORTANT TO SO MANY AMERICANS. 11:27:12 YOU PROMISED THAT THE STIMULUS BILL WOULD CAP UNEMPLOYMENT AT 11:27:15 8%. WE'RE NEAR 10% ACROSS THE 11:27:17 COUNTRY. 12% IN MY HOME STAYED OF RHODE 11:27:19 ISLAND. WE'RE IN A STATE OF CHRONIC 11:27:22 JOBLESSNESS. WE HEARD IN THE BEGINNING OF THE 11:27:25 SHOW, YOU CLAIM THERE'S SAVED JOBS, A STANDARD NOT USED BEFORE 11:27:29 BY ANY ADMINISTRATION. IT'S FRUSTRATING TO HEAR THAT 11:27:33 SAVED JOBS BOASTING BECAUSE IT DOESN'T FEEL THAT WAY TO 11:27:39 AMERICANS WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE JOBS AND THEY'RE LOSING JOBS. 11:27:44 HOW CAN YOU CONTINUE AND YOUR ADMINISTRATION CONTINUE TO SAY 11:27:47 THAT YOU ARE SAVING JOBS WHEN IN FACT PEOPLE ARE LOSING JOBS? 11:27:50 WELL, ACTUALLY, ELISABETH, WHAT'S HAPPENED IS THAT WE'VE 11:27:55 GAINED PRIVATE-SECTOR JOBS FOR THE LAST FIVE MONTHS. 11:27:58 SO WE WERE LOSING JOBS WHEN I WAS SWORN IN. 11:28:01 AS I SAID, 750,000 JOBS PER MONTH. 11:28:05 WE'VE NOW GAINED JOBS FOR FIVE CONSECUTIVE MONTHS IN THE 11:28:08 PRIVATE SECTOR. YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT THAT 11:28:11 IT'S NOT ENOUGH. AND IF YOU DON'T HAVE A JOB 11:28:13 RIGHT NOW, THE ONLY ANSWER THAT YOU WANT TO HEAR IS I'M HIRED. 11:28:17 SO THE FRUSTRATION THAT PEOPLE HAVE IS ENTIRELY JUSTIFIED. 11:28:20 NOW, I HAVE TO TELL YOU, THOUGH, THIS ISN'T JUST MY STANDARD OR 11:28:24 MY ADMINISTRATION'S STANDARD. THERE WAS A REPORT THAT CAME OUT 11:28:26 BY A COUPLE OF ECONOMISTS JUST TODAY, INCLUDING JOHN MCCAIN'S 11:28:33 FORMER ECONOMIST, THAT SAID HAD WE NOT TAKEN THE STEPS THAT WE 11:28:36 TOOK, YOU WOULD HAVE ACTUALLY SEEN MILLIONS OF MORE JOBS LOST 11:28:40 AND WE WOULD BE IN A GREAT DEPRESSION. 11:28:43 SO I KNOW THAT'S NOT SATISFYING AND IT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH. 11:28:46 I THINK THE WORD "SAVED" IS WHAT'S TROUBLING PEOPLE. 11:28:50 WELL, IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE, THOUGH, IF YOUR JOB WAS ONE OF 11:28:54 THE ONES THAT WAS SAVED. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] 11:29:01 I'LL JUST GIVE YOU A VERY SPECIFIC EXAMPLE. 11:29:04 THE STATES GOT HAMMERED AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THIS FINANCIAL 11:29:08 CRISIS. AND IF WE HAD NOT PROVIDED 11:29:12 IMMEDIATE ASSISTANCE TO THE STATES, THEY WOULD HAVE HAD TO 11:29:15 LAY OFF TEACHERS, POLICE OFFICERS, FIREFIGHTERS. 11:29:19 THIS WAS NOT JUST A MATTER OF THE JOBS FOR THOSE PEOPLE. 11:29:23 IT'S ALSO THE SERVICES THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN LOST, KIDS WHO 11:29:26 WOULD NOT HAVE HAD TEACHERS IN THE CLASSROOM. 11:29:29 SO HERE'S THE CHALLENGE. WE WENT THROUGH THE WORST CRISIS 11:29:32 SINCE THE GREAT DEPRESSION. AND WE ARE NOW BOUNCING BACK. 11:29:37 BUT WE'RE NOT BOUNCING BACK AS QUICK AS WE NEED TO. 11:29:41 THERE ARE SPECIFIC STEPS THAT WE CAN TAKE THAT WILL MAKE A 11:29:43 DIFFERENCE. FOR EXAMPLE, WE'VE GOT A BILL 11:29:46 RIGHT NOW FOR SMALL BUSINESSES. I JUST MET WITH SMALL BUSINESS 11:29:49 FOLKS OVER IN EDISON, NEW JERSEY, RIGHT BEFORE I CAME 11:29:53 HERE. THEY WANT TO GROW. 11:29:55 THEY WANT TO EXPAND. SOME OF THEM ARE HAVING TROUBLE 11:29:57 GETTING CREDIT. SOME OF THEM WANT TO BUY NEW 11:30:02 EQUIPMENT BUT ARE WONDERING CAN THEY GET TAX BREAKS THAT WOULD 11:30:05 HELP SAVE THEM MONEY. AND THIS BILL WOULD ADDRESS 11:30:08 THAT. IT HAS GOTTEN TANGLED UP IN 11:30:10 POLITICS AND MY HOPE IS THAT WE GET IT THROUGH. 11:30:13 BUT MY EXPECTATION IS THAT WE ARE GOING TO KEEP ON PUSHING AND 11:30:18 PUSHING AND THE ECONOMY IS GOING TO SLOWLY GET BETTER, AND PEOPLE 11:30:22 WERE TRAUMATIZED. SO CONSUMERS NOW, THEY KIND OF 11:30:25 PULLED BACK A LITTLE BIT. BUSINESSES, WHO ACTUALLY ARE 11:30:29 PROFITABLE AGAIN AND HAVE A LOT OF CASH, ARE HESITATING IN TERMS 11:30:32 OF INVESTMENT. AND SLOWLY, AS PEOPLE GET MORE 11:30:36 CONFIDENT THAT THIS COIFER IS STABLE AND HERE TO STAY, THEN I 11:30:39 THINK WE'RE GOING TO DO BETTER. AND I JUST WANT TO GIVE YOU ONE 11:30:42 EXAMPLE OF AN INDUSTRY WHERE WE ARE IMMEDIATELY SEEING PROGRESS 11:30:45 AND THAT'S THE AUTO INDUSTRY. BECAUSE I THINK IT TELLS A GOOD 11:30:48 STORY ABOUT WHAT WE'VE GONE THROUGH. 11:30:51 YOU REMEMBER, WHEN WE DECIDED TO GO AND RESTRUCTURE THE AUTO 11:30:54 INDUSTRY, THERE WERE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS OUT THERE. 11:30:56 WHY ARE WE BAILING OUT THE CAR COMPANIES? 11:30:59 WE HAD BEEN BAILING THEM OUT FOR YEARS BEFORE THAT, JUST ASKING 11:31:02 NOTHING IN RETURN. WE FINALLY SAID YOU RESTRUCTURE. 11:31:05 AS A CONSEQUENCE, GM AND CHRYSLER DID NOT GO THROUGH 11:31:09 LIQUIDATION. YOU NOW HAVE ALL THOSE U.S. AUTO 11:31:12 COMPANIES SHOWING A PROFIT. THEY'VE REHIRED 55,000 WORKERS. 11:31:17 WE ARE GOING TO GET ALL OF THE MONEY BACK THAT WE INVESTED IN 11:31:21 THOSE CAR COMPANIES AND THE BEST THING IS WE'RE NOW CREATING AN 11:31:26 ENTIRELY NEW CLEAN ENERGY, CLEAN CAR TECHNOLOGY AROUND ADVANCED 11:31:30 BATTERIES AND WHATNOT THAT WILL MAKE US A WORLD LEADER. 11:31:35 NOW, THAT PROGRESS IS SIGNIFICANT. 11:31:37 BUT WE'VE STILL GOT A LONG WAY TO GO BEFORE WE'RE ALL THE WAY 11:31:40 BACK. AND THE ONE THING I WANT TO JUST 11:31:43 TELL EVERYBODY HERE IN THIS AUDIENCE, DON'T BET AGAINST 11:31:46 AMERICAN WORKERS. DON'T BET AGAINST AMERICAN 11:31:53 INGENUITY. WE HAVE THE BEST UNIVERSITIES IN 11:31:55 THE WORLD. IF WE GET OUR MOJO BACK OVER THE 11:31:59 NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS, I'M ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENT WE ARE 11:32:02 GOING TO BE DOING TERRIFIC. BUT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAY 11:32:08 FUNDAMENTAL, STRUCTURAL CHANGES AS WE GO ALONG. 11:32:10 WE HAVE MORE TIME LATER ON. BUT I'VE GOT TO GET TO 11:32:13 AFGHANISTAN BECAUSE IT'S SO MUCH IN THE NEWS RIGHT NOW. 11:32:16 THIS WEEK CONGRESS VOTED TO SPEND ANOTHER $59 BILLION FOR 11:32:20 THE WAR. BUT 100 DEMOCRATS, MUCH LARGER 11:32:23 NUMBER THAN LAST YEAR, REFUSED TO VOTE FOR YOUR PLAN. 11:32:27 AND NOW WE HEAR ABOUT A LEAK OF SECRET DOCUMENTS, PAKISTANI MAY 11:32:32 BE FREQUENTLIER TO THE REBELS THAN YOU ARE. 11:32:38 SUPPOSEDLY WE'RE THERE BECAUSE OF AL QAEDA. 11:32:40 THERE ARE ONLY 50 OR SO MEMBERS OF AL QAEDA IN AFGHANISTAN. 11:32:43 WHY DON'T WE GET OUT? WELL, LOOK. 11:32:47 WAR IS ALWAYS TOUGH AND I WANT TO POINT OUT THAT, WHEN I CAME 11:32:52 IN -- AND DURING THE CAMPAIGN I WAS VERY EXPLICIT. 11:32:56 WE NEED TO BRING AN END TO THE WAR IN IRAQ AND REFOCUS OR 11:32:59 STRATEGY IN AFGHANISTAN BECAUSE IT'S NOT WORKING. 11:33:02 ALL THE LEAKS THAT CAME OUT IN THIS WICKY LEAKS -- WIKILEAKS 11:33:09 THING THAT OCCURRED THIS WEEK JUST CONFIRMED WHAT I WAS SAYING 11:33:11 DURING THE CAMPAIGN, WHICH WAS FROM 2004 ONWARD, AFGHANISTAN 11:33:17 WAS UNDERRESOURCED. WE TOOK OUR EYE OFF THE BALL. 11:33:21 WE WERE DISTRACTED WITH IRAQ. NOW HERE'S THE GOOD NEWS. 11:33:24 WE ARE ENDING OUR COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAQ THIS MONTH. 11:33:30 BECAUSE OF THE INCREDIBLE HEROISM OF OUR TROOPS AND 11:33:33 BECAUSE OF THE IRAQI PEOPLE, WE ARE NOW IN A POSITION TO END OUR 11:33:39 COMBAT OPERATIONS IN -- COMBAT OPERATIONS. 11:33:47 IN AFGHANISTAN WE STILL HAVE A LOT OF WORK TO DO. 11:33:50 ALTHOUGH AL QAEDA IS IN THE BORDER REEMINGS BETWEEN 11:33:53 AFGHANISTAN AND PAKISTAN, IT IS NOT HARD FOR THEM TO MOVE 11:33:57 BETWEEN THE BORDERS. THESE ARE UNCONTROLLED BORDERS. 11:34:00 AND THE FOLKS WHO PERPETRATED 9/11 AND THEIR ALLIES ARE STILL 11:34:04 CONGREGATED THERE. THAT IS STILL THE EPICENTER OF 11:34:08 TERRORISM TARGETING THE UNITED STATES. 11:34:10 AND WHAT WE NEED IS TO HAVE A STABLE AFGHANISTAN AND A 11:34:13 PAKISTAN THAT IS NOT A SANCTUARY FOR TERRORISM. 11:34:16 NOW, WHAT I'VE SAID IS WE'RE GOING TO GET AN OPPORTUNITY, 11:34:23 WE'RE GOING TO GIVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO THE AFGHAN 11:34:25 GOVERNMENT TO BUILD UP ITS SECURITY FORCES AFTER 30 YEARS 11:34:29 OF WAR, WE'RE GOING TO HELP THEM WITH SOME DEVELOPMENT, WE'RE 11:34:32 GOING TO ALLOW THEM TO STABILIZE AND IN JULY OF 2011, NEXT YEAR, 11:34:38 WE'RE GOING TO START THINNING OUT OR TROOPS. 11:34:40 BUT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO UNDERSTAND WE HAVE REAL SECURITY 11:34:43 INTERESTS THERE. BECAUSE IF YOU'VE JUST GOT WHAT 11:34:47 SOME PEOPLE CALL CHAOSST STAN IN THIS REGION WHERE THERE IS NO 11:34:54 FUNCTIONING GOVERNMENT AND WARLORDS AND TERRORIST 11:34:57 AFFILIATES ARE ABLE TO OPERATE, THAT IS GOING TO BE THAT MUCH 11:35:00 TOUGHER FOR US TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT ATTACKING US. 11:35:03 SO I'M NOT INTERESTED IN OPEN-ENDED COMMITMENT. 11:35:05 THE SACRIFICES OUR MILITARY HAVE BEEN MAKING HAVE BEEN 11:35:10 EXTRAORDINARY. AND I SAID WHEN I ANNOUNCED OUR 11:35:12 NEW STRATEGY THAT, AT A CERTAIN POINT, WE'VE GOT TO FOCUS ON 11:35:16 BUILDING THE -- DO SOME NATION BUILDING HERE IN THE UNITED 11:35:19 STATES AND NOT OVERSEAS. THAT'S GOT TO BE A PRIORITY. 11:35:22 BUT WE'VE GOT TO FINISH THE JOB THAT WE STARTED AND IT'S NOT YET 11:35:25 DONE. JULY 2011? 11:35:27 WE'RE GOING TO START DRAWING DOWN. 11:35:30 WE WILL BE BACK WITH MORE. FOR A VERY MINOR 11:35:37 DINNER TABLE INFRACTION AND OH LOOK 11:35:41 HE'S HELPING HIMSELF TO MY UNGUARDED 11:35:42 KRAFT MACARONI AND CHEESE. DING! 11:38:30 WHAT WAS THAT? THAT WAS THE NOISE [ Male Announcer ] 11:38:32 REMOVE THREE TIMES MORE SOAP SCUM 11:38:33 PER SWIPE WITH THE NEW 11:38:34 MR. CLEAN MAGIC ERASER 11:38:35 BATH SCRUBBER. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] 11:41:02 WE'RE BACK WITH PRESIDENT OBAMA. 11:41:04 OK. YOU THOUGHT THOSE QUESTIONS WERE 11:41:06 HARD. NOW THESE ARE REALLY GOING TO BE 11:41:08 HARD. I'M GOING TO DO A LITTLE 11:41:10 LIGHTNING ROD. FIRST IMPRESSIONS. 11:41:12 LET'S GO. DO YOU KNOW THAT LINDSAY 11:41:14 LOHAN IS IN JAIL [LAUGHTER] 11:41:16 I ACTUALLY KNOW THAT, YES. DOES MEL GIBSON NEED ANGER 11:41:20 MANAGEMENT? I -- I -- I -- 11:41:28 [LAUGHTER] LET ME ANSWER THE AFGHANISTAN 11:41:30 QUESTION. LOOK I HAVEN'T SEEN A MEL GIBSON 11:41:37 MOVIE. THE TAPES ARE BETTER THAN ANY 11:41:39 MOVIE HE EVER MADE. PLEASE. 11:41:42 SHOULD SNOOKI RUN AS MAYOR OF WASILLA? 11:41:45 [LAUGHTER] I'VE GOT TO ADMIT, I DON'T 11:41:48 KNOW WHO SNOOKI IS. [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] 11:41:51 YOU DON'T? I'M SORRY. 11:41:55 GTL! ONE MORE BECAUSE THESE ARE 11:42:00 OBVIOUSLY -- YOU DON'T KNOW ANY POP CULTURE. 11:42:02 WHICH IS GOOD NEWS. WE DON'T WANT YOU -- 11:42:04 I KNEW LINDSAY WAS IN JAIL. HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT? 11:42:07 I DON'T KNOW. MR. PRESIDENT, DO YOU TWEET? 11:42:12 I DON'T TWEET. DO YOU FACEBOOK? 11:42:17 I THINK THERE IS AN OFFICIAL PRESIDENT'S TWEET. 11:42:21 BUT SOME 20-YEAR-OLD IS DOING A LOT OF THE TWEETING. 11:42:26 DO YOU LET YOUR GIRLS TWEET? THEY TOOK YOUR EMAIL AWAY 11:42:29 WHEN YOU CAME IN. BUT DO YOU DO IT ON THE SIDE? 11:42:32 I HAVE A BLACKBERRY. BUT ONLY 10 PEOPLE HAVE IT. 11:42:35 AND I'VE GOT TO ADMIT, IT'S NO FUN BECAUSE THEY THINK THAT IT'S 11:42:40 PROBABLY GOING TO BE SUBJECT TO THE PRESIDENTIAL RECORDS ACT, SO 11:42:43 NOBODY WANTS TO SEND ME THE REAL JUICY STUFF. 11:42:47 IT'S ALL VERY OFFICIAL. MR. PRESIDENT, YOU HAVE A 11:42:50 MEETING COMING UP AND WE'D LIKE TO BRIEF YOU. 11:42:52 AND THAT'S IT? THAT'S ALL. 11:42:54 HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT AN IPHONE, MAKING THE SWITCH? 11:42:57 I HAVEN'T MADE THE SWITCH YET. 11:43:00 I DO HAVE A POD, THOUGH. I GOT A GREAT IPOD. 11:43:04 WHAT'S THE FIRST COUPLE OF SONGS ON YOUR IPOD? 11:43:07 YOU NAME IT, I'VE GOT IT. I'VE GOT JAY-Z ON THERE. 11:43:15 I'VE GOT FRANK SINATRA ON THERE. JUSTIN BIEBER? 11:43:20 I'VE GA MARIA CALLAS ON THERE. 11:43:24 I DO NOT HAVE JUSTIN BIEBER ON THERE. 11:43:27 [APPLAUSE] I HAVE MET HIM. 11:43:29 HE CAME TO SING AT THE WHITE HOUSE. 11:43:32 HE'S A VERY NICE YOUNG MAN. MR. PRESIDENT, ARE YOU GOING 11:43:34 TO CHELSEA CLINTON'S WEDDING? I AM NOT GOING AND I HAVE TO 11:43:37 SAY, IT WOULD BE TOUGH ENOUGH HAVING ONE PRESIDENT AT A 11:43:40 WEDDING. YOU DON'T WANT TWO PRESIDENTS AT 11:43:42 A WEDLE. THAT'S TRUE. 11:43:44 [APPLAUSE] WITH ALL THE SECRET SERVICE 11:43:48 AND EVERYBODY GETTING MAKINGED AS THEY'RE GOING IN AND 11:43:52 EVERYTHING GETTING RIPPED UP. WERE YOU INVITED TO CHELSEA 11:43:55 CLINTON'S WEDDING? YOU KNOW, I WAS NOT INVITED 11:43:58 BECAUSE I THINK THAT HILLARY AND BILL, PROPERLY, WANT TO KEEP 11:44:03 THIS AS A THING FOR CHELSEA AND HER SOON-TO-BE HUSBAND. 11:44:08 AND I AM GOING -- I'M LETTING YOU GUYS KNOW NOW. 11:44:11 Y'ALL PROBABLY WILL NOT BE INVITED TO MALIA'S WEDDING OR 11:44:17 SASHA'S. [APPLAUSE] 11:44:21 WE UNDERSTAND THAT. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT 11:44:23 MICHELLE AND I ARE SO ADAMANT ABOUT IS MAKING SURE THAT MALIA 11:44:27 AND SASHA HAVE AS NORMAL A LIFE AS POSSIBLE. 11:44:29 AND I KNOW BILL AND HILLARY, WHO ARE TERRIFIC PARENTS, HAD THAT 11:44:33 SAME ATTITUDE WHEN IT CAME TO CHELSEA. 11:44:36 HAVE BOYS ENTERED THE PICTURE YET FOR YOUR GIRLS? 11:44:38 THANK FLU, NO! [APPLAUSE] 11:44:41 MR. PRESIDENT, IF YOU WANT GREAT BABYSITTERS -- 11:44:47 NO, I'M NOT BABYSITTING. ACTUALLY, THEY'RE NOW OLD 11:44:52 ENOUGH WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO BE DOING THE BABYSITTING. 11:45:01 KNO' WHEN SOMETHING'S SAFE? 11:45:05 YOU TALK TO THESE GUYS. CALL OR CLICK TODAY. 11:49:08 [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] WE ARE BACK WITH PRESIDENT 11:49:20 BARACK OBAMA. PRESIDENT OBAMA, YOU'VE BEEN IN 11:49:22 OFFICE 18 MONTHS. CLEARLY YOU HAVE NOT BEGUN TO 11:49:25 WALK ON WATER, THOUGH PEOPLE EXPECTED YOU TO RIGHT AFTER THE 11:49:30 ELECTION. YOU WERE TOLD YOU WERE TOO SLOW 11:49:32 ON RESPONDING TO BP OR TOO FAST ON MISS SHERROD. 11:49:38 YOU HAVEN'T EXPLAINED YOURSELF. NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. 11:49:40 SIR, CAN YOU WIN AS PRESIDENT? ARE YOU ON ZOLOFT? 11:49:46 [LAUGHTER] LOOK. 11:49:48 WHEN I LOOK BACK OVER THESE LAST 20 MONTHS, THEY HAVE BEEN AS 11:49:52 CHALLENGING BUT AS SATISFYING AS ANY IN MY LIFE. 11:49:56 AND I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO SAY AT THE END OF JUST THE FIRST 11:50:00 HALF OF MY FIRST TERM THAT EVERY AMERICAN IN THIS COUNTRY IS SOON 11:50:06 GOING TO BE ABLE TO GET HEALTH INSURANCE IF EVEN THEY'VE GOT A 11:50:11 PREEXISTING CONDITION. [APPLAUSE] 11:50:13 I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO SAY THAT TOBACCO COMPANIES CAN'T 11:50:15 MARKET THEIR PRODUCTS TO KIDS. [APPLAUSE] 11:50:18 I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO SAY WE HAVE A CREDIT CARD LAW IN PLACE 11:50:20 THAT MAKES SURE THAT YOU DON'T HAVE ANY HIDDEN FEES AND THAT 11:50:24 YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S GOING ON WHEN IT COMES TO CREDIT CARD 11:50:27 COMPANIES. [APPLAUSE] 11:50:29 WE'VE GOT THE TOUGHEST FINANCIAL REGULATORY REFORM LAW SINCE THE 11:50:32 GREAT DEPRESSION AND WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO ENFORCE THESE LAWS 11:50:35 SO THERE ARE NO MORE TAXPAYER BAILOUTS. 11:50:39 WE'VE SAVED AN ECONOMY FROM A GREAT DEPRESSION AND WE HAVE 11:50:42 CREATED, I THINK, A WHOLE RANGE OF REFORMS ON EDUCATION THAT ARE 11:50:48 GOING TO PAY OFF OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS SO THAT MORE KIDS ARE 11:50:51 GOING TO COLLEGE, MORE KIDS ARE STUDYING MATH, MORE KIDS ARE 11:50:54 STUDYING SCIENCE. WILL THEY HAVE JOBS WHEN 11:50:57 THEY'RE OUT OF THERE? THEY'RE GOING TO CREATE THESE 11:50:59 JOBS. THAT'S THE THING. 11:51:02 WHEN OUR KIDS ARE DOING WELL IN SCHOOL, WHEN WE'VE GOT THE BEST 11:51:06 -TRAINED WORKFORCE, WHEN THEY'RE INNOVATING AND CREATING JOBS 11:51:10 THROUGH SMALL BUSINESSES, THAT'S WHEN AMERICA SUCCEEDS. 11:51:13 AND SO I FEEL VERY OPTIMISTIC AND I DO THINK THAT THE REASON I 11:51:21 SEEM CALM ALL THE TIME, EVEN IF SOMETIMES WE'RE GOING THROUGH 11:51:26 SOME TURBULENCE, IS I TRY TO TAKE THE LONG VIEW. 11:51:28 I TRY TO SAY, IF I WAKE UP TODAY AND I KNOW I'M DOING A GOOD JOB, 11:51:33 SOMEWHERE DOWN THE ROAD, THAT'S GOING TO PAY OFF AND PEOPLE ARE 11:51:36 GOING TO BE ABLE TO LOOK BACK AND SAY HE MADE THAT DECISION 11:51:40 BASED ON WHAT'S BEST FOR THE COUNTRY AS OPPOSED TO SHORT-TERM 11:51:45 POLITICS. I THINK THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO 11:51:47 GOVERN. [APPLAUSE] 11:51:48 THE FACT THAT YOUR RATING IS SO LOW, DOES THAT BOTHER YOU? 11:51:54 WASHINGTON IS OBSESSED WITH POLLS. 11:51:56 SO I CAN LOOK HISTORICALLY AND SAY MY POLLS AT THIS POINT ARE 11:52:00 HIGHER THAN RONALD REAGAN'S OR BILL CLINTON'S OR JIMMY CARTER'S 11:52:07 WERE. BUT THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS 11:52:10 THAT DOESN'T MAKE TOO MUCH DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THESE THINGS 11:52:13 CHANGE VERY QUICKLY. WHAT I CONSTANTLY AM FOCUSED ON 11:52:20 IS AM I DOING WHAT IS RIGHT FOR THE COUNTRY? 11:52:22 AM I MAKING THE BEST POSSIBLE DECISIONS I CAN BE MAKING? 11:52:25 IF I DO THAT, THEN I HAVE CONFIDENCE THAT I'LL BE REWARDED 11:52:30 BECAUSE I THINK THAT GOOD POLICY IS GOOD POLITICS. 11:52:32 WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR LEGACY TO BE? 11:52:36 I'D LIKE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO BE ABLE TO LOOK BACK AND SAY 11:52:40 THIS WAS A TIME WHEN WE TACKLED A BUNCH OF PROBLEMS THAT WE'D 11:52:44 BEEN PUTTING OFF FOR TOO LONG. HEALTH CARE. 11:52:48 [APPLAUSE] WE'D BEEN PUTTING IT OFF FOR TOO 11:52:50 LONG. EDUCATION. 11:52:52 WE'RE FINALLY MAKING SCHOOLS BETTER FOR OUR KIDS. 11:52:54 WE NEED AN ENERGY POLICY SO WE'RE NOT DEPENDENT ON FOREIGN 11:52:57 OIL. [APPLAUSE] 11:52:59 WE'RE DEALING WITH CHALLENGES TO OUR ENVIRONMENT. 11:53:02 AS I SAID BEFORE, I AM SO OPTIMISTIC ABOUT AMERICA BECAUSE 11:53:05 I'M OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. 11:53:08 EVERY TIME I TRAVEL, EVERY TIME I GET OUT OF WASHINGTON AND I 11:53:11 SIT DOWN AND TALK TO FOLKS, THEY ARE GENEROUS, THEY ARE STRONG, 11:53:15 THEY ARE RESILIENT, THEY ARE FULL OF IMAGINATION, THEY ARE 11:53:19 FULL OF DRIVE, THEY ARE FULL OF PLUCK, AND THERE'S NO REASON WHY 11:53:23 AMERICA SHOULDN'T CONTINUE TO BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON EARTH 11:53:29 FOR DECADES AND CENTURIES TO COME. 11:53:32 BUT WE JUST HAVE TO REMIND OURSELVES OF WHAT MAKES US GREAT 11:53:37 AND HOPEFULLY I'LL BE ABLE TO HELP LEAD THE COUNTRY THROUGH 11:53:39 THIS DIFFICULT TIME SO THAT WE CONTINUE ON THIS EXTRAORDINARY 11:53:44 JOURNEY THAT WE'VE BEEN ON. MR. PRESIDENT, ALL FIVE OF US 11:53:48 WERE DELIGHTED THAT YOU WERE HERE AND HONORED TO HAVE YOU. 11:53:51 I HAD A WONDERFUL TIME. THANK YOU. 11:53:54 [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] [ Woman #2 ] I'D LIKE TO 11:54:02 ENJOY THINGS AGAIN. [ Woman #3 ] 11:54:05 I FEEL THESE ACHES AND PAINS. MR. PRESIDENT, ARE YOU GOING 11:43:34 TO CHELSEA CLINTON'S WEDDING? I AM NOT GOING AND I HAVE TO 11:43:37 SAY, IT WOULD BE TOUGH ENOUGH HAVING ONE PRESIDENT AT A 11:43:40 WEDDING.
