Nineteen women in their underwear, and another one naked, stood and sat on the floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney on Wednesday (4/08) The audience watched the models and the models watched the audience. The "minimalist" show which had been the toast of the New York art scene left some Australians wondering about the direction of their contemporary art. Nudity and art have long been synonymous. But New Yorkbased Italian artist, VANESSA BEECROFT has taken the association to the extreme. Rather than photographing or painting models in a studio, she brings them to an audience. Beecroft says she's experimenting with images of women. But in Sydney, she backed away from having as many totally nude bodies as she had in past performances. The 30yearold artist who wowed them in New York and Venice with a similar show of female flesh prepared 20 Australian women for the live portrait event. Both artist and helpers documented their spontaneous poses. The show was unleashed on a sellout audience at the Museum of Contemporary Art, where the models stood, occasionally moved, but mostly stared right back at the audience. Gallery chairman JOHN KALDOR put 50thousand US dollars of his money to bring Vanessa Beecroft to Sydney. Earlier this week ALEXANDER McQUEEN sent his models out on an icy catwalk for a highly innovative and original fashion show. And yesterday, February 25, it was the turn of Welsh wonder JULIAN MACDONALD to have his models and latest designs sliding down a snowy catwalk. On Wednesday night, MacDonald unveiled a stunning autumn/winter 1999 collection that featured models in sleek designs gliding down an icy catwalk. This was winter coats as inspired by woolly bears; part of a collection the designer says is aimed at showing off the female form, and wrapping it in items that are both familiar -- like an old scarf or a teddy bear -- and luxurious -- like a sparkling gown. With faux-snow flurries opening his show, MacDonald said his collection and his ice-draped catwalk was inspired by the Alaskan landscape. But MacDonald eschews trends that alternatively raise and lower hemlines, saying he looks to creates items that are glamorous and sexy -- made for women with an attitude. MacDonald used models Jodie Kidd and Alek Wek, who like him, are rising stars in the fashion world. Later on, avant-gardist HUSSEIN CHALAYAN wowed crowds with a show replete with minimalist futurism. The Central St Martin's graduate, who is already developing a reputation of leaving audiences gasping with disbelief, produced another show that verged on the bizarre, with intricately designed items. Chalayan shocked audiences in the past by sending models down the catwalk wearing mouthpieces that clamped their jaws into a scream. But the designer who remains unapologetic about his shock tactics, this year displayed a more simple line, featuring only blacks and whites with futuristic collars.
