ALL PART OF CNN"S SPECIAL COVERGE "THE FRONT LINE AGAINST ISIS"

 --REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
BURSTS OF GUNFIRE … AND ARTILLERY EXPLOSIONS … A CONSTANT REMINDER THAT THE ENEMY - ISIS - IS RELENTLESSLY PROBING FOR VULNERABILITIES IN THE IRAQI ARMY"S DEFENSES.
(General Najim Al-Jubouri, Ninevah Operations Commander) "ISIS, and especially now, and we are on the perimeter of what is their so called caliphate. They are using waves of suicide bombers backed by fighters."
COALITION AIRSTRIKES LEVELED THIS BUILDING ISIS MILITANTS HAD SNUCK INTO THE NIGHT BEFORE WE ARRIVED.
THE HILLSIDE IS STREWN WITH THE BLOATED BODIES OF DEAD ISIS FIGHTERS … ONE OF THEM LOOKS PARTICULARLY YOUNG, A TEENAGER THE IRAQIS SAY.
THE GENERAL JUBOURI"S MEN ONLY RECENTLY RE-CAPTURED THIS VILLAGE AND A HANDFUL OF OTHERS - THE FIRST TENTATIVE STEPS IN THE BATTLE FOR MOSUL, IRAQS SECOND LARGEST CITY THAT HUMILIATINGLY FELL TO ISIS AFTER IRAQI SECURITY FORCES ABANDONED THEIR POSITIONS AROUND 2 YEARS AGO. THESE ARE MEN RETRAINED, UNDER NEW COMMAND, FORCES THAT WILL REPEATEDLY BE PUT TO THE TEST - WILL THEY HOLD THIS GROUND AND FIGHT OR AGAIN FLEE?
KEY OF COURSE TO THE EQUATION IS US SUPPORT.
(General Najim Al-Jubouri, Ninevah Operations Commander) "For us, we have enough ground forces, the most important thing is to see ongoing US backing with the air support, advisors and logistical support. It"s not an urgent thing for us right now - boots on the ground. - we can liberate our lands."
ISIS HAS HAD PLENTY OF TIME IN ITS DEFENSES IN MOSUL AND HERE - STILL SOME 45 KILOMETERS OR 30 MILES AWAY FROM THE MAIN BATTLEGROUND.
DEEP IN ONE OF THE HILLS -- A LABYRINTH ...
(Arwa Damon/Reporting) "This is not just a tunnel complex its actually a tunnel and sleeping quarters complex that has been dug well underground."
WINDING PASSAGES THAT VEER OFF IN MULTIPLE DIRECTIONS … THIS ONE LEADS TO A SMALL OPENING - FOR OXYGEN CIRCULATION WE ARE TOLD.
AND THIS IS JUST THE START OF THE IMPENDING BLOODY BATTLE TO TRY TO LIBERATE MOSUL, ONE THAT WILL BE A DEFINING CHAPTER IN THIS NATIONS HISTORY AND BEYOND.

YPRES reel 7
Reel 7. <br/><br/>"Further advances are made increasingly difficult by the enemy's erection of innumerable concrete forts known as "pill-boxes" which, armed with machine guns, wreak great havoc." M/S of soldiers crawling on the ground towards a pill-box. "Tanks are brought up to deal with the new menace." M/S of large tanks being driven towards the camera. "Many give a good account of themselves in spite of the glutinous morass over which they fight." M/S of tanks passing the camera amidst gunfire. Men climb onto the top of the tank. "Discovering the morning that shell fire has obliterated his tapes, Captain Robertson guides his tanks on foot, in full view of the enemy, rather than fail the infantry depending on them." Robertson walks through a very muddy field in front of a tank. "As is inevitable, his devotion costs him his life, but not before his foremost tanks have reached their objective and make possible the success which follows. Captain Robertson was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross." M/S of German soldiers in trench behind pill-box firing at oncoming tanks. Soldiers tend to a wounded man before climbing back into their tank and moving off. C/U of tank advancing over German trench. "Pill boxes still prove formidable, but, Australia has a way of dealing with formidable objects. Lance Corporal Peeler A.I.F. furnishes a typical example." M/S of Australian troops lying on the ground firing their rifles. Peeler runs forward holding a grenade. Interior of the pill box - German soldiers operating a gun. <br/><br/>"On the 3rd October Captain Clement Robertson, to ensure his tanks coming effectively into action on the following morning, spends the night under continuous shell fire marking a path through the swamp." Night shots of Robertson laying down a white stream of cloth to mark the path. M/S of the troops firing at the pill box. M/S of Peeler getting closer to his target. He throws the grenade through the hole in the pill box. Interior - we see an explosion and the German gunner falling to the ground. Peeler clambers over the pill box. <br/>The soldiers advance. "Not content with having routed the enemy, Lance Corporal Peeler completes their annihilation with one of their own machine guns - and wins the Victoria Cross." Peeler climbs down into the pill box and emerges carrying a machine gun. He lies down in the mud and fires off the machine gun. "Save for a brief respite, the weather grows steadily worse - winter is approaching and still Passchendaele remains impregnable." Aerial view is used again to show how the British are advancing. "A final effort is launched. Throughout the day the issue remains in doubt." Men advance uphill. "By evening 20 weary Canadians find themselves in possession of Belle Vue Spur, an arm of Passchendaele Ridge." M/S of tired soldiers advancing upon a ridge. "In ignorance of the value of their capture, they rest in some disorder until Lieutenant Shankland, gathering reinforcements, rallies them and maintains the position against repeated attacks." Various shots of soldiers on the ridge. Shankland persuades them to stand up and carry on. "During a lull Lieutenant Shankland, though wounded, hurries back to his commander to report." Shankland is seen in silhouette running through shells to report. M/S of Shankland arriving at his destination and being greeted. He reports to his Commanding Officer: "I have fifty men on Belle Vue Spur sir - give me reinforcements and the ridge is ours!" The field radio operator gives his ear piece to the C.O. "The wires hum - the attack is recommenced. Shankland gets his reinforcements and later, a well merited Victoria Cross." the C.O. shakes Shankland's hand, gives him a drink of water then sends him on his way.<br/><br/>"The capture of Belle Vue makes possible the final assault. Wearied and exhausted battalions are called upon to make one last endeavour." Men "at ease" sleep on the ground. They are roused by a Sergeant. One man has a helmet over his face, it is taken off and it looks like he is having a nice dream. Through a camera trick we see an image of his dream superimposed over his head - he is riding a bicycle in the countryside.<br/><br/>He is woken up, looks a bit cross then yawns, resigning himself to putting on his battle dress. "In a war of heroic deeds, Passchendale will rank among the most heroic struggles. On 7th December, after five months of gruelling fighting, the crest of that tragically famous ridge is gained." Various shots of men running across the ridge through shots and explosions. They set up position at the top of the ridge. "And the victors can look down upon country unknown to British eyes since the fateful October of '14." Men standing on top of the ridge wave their helmets in victory. <br/><br/>This is presumably the end of the film although I would have expected more celebration and an end title. <br/><br/>Note: fantastic film with great battle footage - although reconstruction it is very well done and mostly realistic. Some overacting by today's standards though! There are a few sections which look like actuality footage filmed during the 1910s rather than in the 1920s - soldiers on parade and leaving for the front rather than actually at the front. Some very touching scenes such as men receiving mail from home and helping wounded comrades. All very nicely shot.<br/><br/>Note: footage taken from Imperial War Museum catalogue.

FIREARMS CASES HIGH / AGENCIES WORRY ABOUT AUTOMATIC GUNFIRE (2024)
While the number of cases involving firearms hit an all-time high in Minnesota, the attorney and sheriff of the state’s most populated county say they’re worried not just about the numbers…but the firepower behind those guns. According to the most recent County Attorney Firearms Report, highlighting felony cases where defendants allegedly had or used a firearm and committed offenses, there were 1,805 cases in 2023 — a 14% increase from the year before. When asked what sticks out most as she reflects on last year’s cases, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty says the number of switches — which are also known as ‘auto sears’ — her office is seeing involved in cases is increasing. Switches are small modifications made to guns that turn them into automatic weapons. “Gun violence is dangerous [and particularly when we’re seeing the assault rifles, and the guns with switches, we’re seeing like a spray of gunfire and it is harming people who are in the community, gun violence is harming our young people,” Moriarty said. She says that violence is getting more dangerous due to the proliferation of switches. “The idea that there are now assault rifles [and] guns with switches is really scary,” Moriarty said. Another agency tracking this issue closely is the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) — the ATF’s St. Paul Field Division told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, “The Twin Cities were not the first to start recovering these auto sear devices, but certainly among the first areas to start seeing them proliferate with such intensity.” The region’s Special Agent in Charge Travis Riddle also shared the following statement. “Auto sears are wreaking havoc here in the Twin Cities and in cities across the U.S. These small devices by themselves are considered machineguns, and when attached to a firearm, they present a significant threat to not just the intended targets, but also any innocent bystander that happens to get in the way. I know I speak on behalf of all law enforcement that this is something that needs to stop, and we are committed to ensure people who are driving this violence be held accountable.” The ATF is one of the partners the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is working with in a coordinated effort to rid the streets of these kinds of weapons. “It is not uncommon for [my deputies] to be doing their job and finding these guns with switches almost on a daily detail,” Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said. “We’re doing a lot of collaboration work on what we call focus enforcement details which we collaborate with MPD, the BCA, the ATF, and going into these targeted areas,” she added. Both Witt and Moriarty say reaching the youth and young adults will be key in this battle, adding it will take everyone to be successful. “It has to be a team effort,” Witt said. “There’s not one of these agencies that can do it by themselves.”

21354 " THE FLEET THAT CAME TO STAY " 1945 INVASION OF OKINAWA WORLD WAR II KAMIKAZE ATTACKS
This film from the end of the Second World War was produced by the U.S. Navy as part of the industrial incentive scheme, and shows the naval engagements that took place during the invasion of Okinawa. It opens with a note informing viewers that this was the final battle fought by the Navy in WW2 and it had the greatest concentration of ships in men in all of history thus far (:09). The film is presented by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard (:38). Explosions as warships fire shells at shoreline installations open the film (:59). A barrage leads to a long line of successive explosions (1:51). British allied forces were attacking to the south at the bypass fortress of Formosa (1:56). Fukushima is seen being hit with shell fire and bombs (2:02). Task Force 58, under the command of Admiral A. Mitscher, stepped up their continued aerial assault on Kyushu (2:24) and targeted Japanese shipping, harbors, air fields and factories. Men of the Navy called the day “Love Day” while in the rest of the world it was Easter Sunday (4:08). In the morning, Marine and Army forces moved in for a beach landing (4:20) and footage follows as troops spill out from amtraks (4:26) / amtracs. 100,000 men were sent ashore (4:33). The first week of the landing was mysteriously quiet and men aboard the 1,400 ships supporting the invasion are seen searching the skies anticipating an attack (5:24). The first Japanese Kamikaze corps plane arrives and takes a suicide dive onto one of the 1,400 ships (5:43). Men of the Japanese Kamikaze corps wore red sashes (5:56) and their target was the deck or hull of any American ship (6:00). Another Kamikaze plane drops near a ship and explodes in the water (6:12). The Kamikaze corps was considered to be Japan’s secret weapon, though U.S. forces were very familiar with them as they had been hitting in the Pacific for months (6:22). In this final attempt, Japan sent every plane it could fly (6:37). Combat continued into the night as gunfire and explosions light up the darkness (8:59). This Navy fleet was the "fleet that came to stay" as it had to support the land invasion (10:21). Foot soldiers are seen moving through rice paddies and over ridges as the fleet provided close support (10:48). Strikes were ordered from the air control room aboard the command ship (10:59). A brigade of ships was set up across the waters to provide the men with a steady line of supply (11:41). Kamikaze fighters are seen at the end of the long supply line (11:55). A Japanese plane is seen hit and breaking apart into the water (12:15). Troops simultaneously fixed their own ships and continued on fighting (13:20). As a plane lands on an aircraft carrier, a missile breaks loose and runs across the deck without exploding (13:39). US forces received news of President Roosevelt's death on April 13th, 1945 and take a moment to pay respects (14:34) before continuing to fight (15:06). The fighting would continue for three months (15:10). Only about 10% of enemy crafts made it through the US air patrol (15:16). Watchmen on the early hours of May 9th received news of Victory Day in Europe (15:59) or VE-Day though the Pacific war still carried on (16:21). Heavy batteries of cruisers, destroyers, and battleships fired against the hills of Okinawa (16:35). A headline from Washington Post reads “Navy Okinawa Casualties Near 10,000” (18:03). An impressive shot of black smoke puffs in the sky above popping white splashes along the water during intense combat follows (18:20). The film concludes just after a note informing citizens to continue to buy Victory bonds to ensure the end of the war (18:35). <p><p>The Battle of Okinawa, Apr 1, 1945 – Jun 22, 1945, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by United States Marine and Army forces against the Imperial Japanese Army. <p><p>We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
