Activists waving banners, reading (Korean) "Let's send pro-North Korea forces back to North Korea", "Punishing the Pan-national Alliance for Korea's Reunification which follows North Korean missile." 10. Activists chanting STORYLINE Protesters staged a rally in Seoul on Wednesday denouncing North Korea's plan to launch a rocket. Protesters slashed North Korean flags and chanted against those activists who, according to them, were supporting North Korea's nuclear plans. During the past few weeks, groups of pro North Korea activists have staged demonstrations across Seoul, denouncing their government's policies and urged them to move towards the reunification with North Korea. These protesters have called on South Korean government to stop criticising North Korea's upcoming rocket launch. North Korea has recently announced plans to launch a satellite into space using a long-range rocket, as part of celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the April 15 birth of its late President Kim Il Sung. Critics say North Korea's rocket launches are a cover to test delivery systems for long-range missiles it hopes to mount with nuclear weapons. Pro North protesters have called it a double standard to agree to the launch of a South Korean rocket but to disagree with North Korea's Unha-3 rocket launch. However anti North Korea activists believe such statements support North Korea's decision to launch the rocket. "I think people who are praising those decisions are truly wrong. So we gathered today to strongly denounce them," Choo Sun-hee, Anti-North Korea demonstrator said. In other words, nuclear power and a rocket are connected together. Therefore, if North Korea succeeds in launching the rocket, North Korea's negotiation power with the US will strengthen." 12. Various of Koh speaking 13. SOUNDBITE: (Korean) Koh Yu-hwan, Professor of North Korean Studies, Dongguk University: "With its announcement that it (North Korea) is a nuclear power state, North Korea is trying to use this rocket launch to show that it will deter any attack from the international community by proving it has nuclear weapons." 14. Mid of Koh speaking STORYLINE: A South Korean official on Monday described North Korea's plan to launch a long-range rocket as "a grave provocation." Kim Hyung-suk, spokesman for the South Korean Ministry of Unification, urged North Korea "to withdraw its plan immediately and work in compliance with the international community's demands." The North Korean launch, set for 10 to 22 December, is likely to heighten already strained tensions with Washington as well as Seoul. South Korea plans to hold a presidential election on 19 December and US President Barack Obama is preparing to begin his second term. According to Koh Yu-hwan, Professor of North Korean Studies at Dongguk University, North Korea is trying to put on a show of power following the appointment of China's new leadership and the re-election of Obama. "After the election on new administrations (in the United States and China), North Korea is trying to send a message to those nations if the rocket launch succeeds. In other words, nuclear power and a rocket are connected together. Therefore, if North Korea succeeds in launching the rocket, North Korea's negotiation power with the US will strengthen," Koh said. It would be North Korea's second rocket launch attempt under leader Kim Jong Un, who took power following his father Kim Jong Il's death nearly a year ago. That first launch eight months ago earned North Korea widespread international condemnation, despite ending in an embarrassing misfire. Some analysts have expressed scepticism that North Korea has corrected whatever caused the first failure. North Korea says the rocket will be mounted with a polar-orbiting Earth observation satellite. People in Seoul on Monday said the planned launch was unlikely to have any serious consequences. "I don't think that kind of behaviour would lead to war," said 23 year-old student Park Hyun-woo. Yoon Yang-jong, 79, commented: "I don't think the impact of this will be that serious. The reason why North Korea is trying to do that (launching a rocket) is because the Kim Jong-un regime is unstable."
