VP Joe Biden:
"We lost because of an awful lot of hardworking Americans who live in areas where we did not pay much attention to. They are not racist. Barack Obama won these people before. It"s not like they are racist. They voted for a black man. But they did not vote this time for the Democrats."

OBAMA DEFENDS SENATE LEADER REID RACIST COMMENT / TV ONE INTERVIEW
President Obama remarks on alleged racial comments by Harry Reid in book "Game Change." Video is from TV-One and must include mention of primetime "Washington Watch with Roland Martin" special airing on Martin Luther King Day. HARRY REID IS A FRIEND OF MINE. HE HAS A STALWART CHAMPION OF VOTING RIGHTS, CIVIL RIGHTS. HE'S SPEND A LOT OF HIS POLITICAL CAPITAL IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ELECTION TO PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO EVERY AMERICAN, AND THAT'S GOING TO HAVE A GREAT IMPACT ON AFRICAN-AMERICANS, LATINOS AROUND THE COUNTRY. THIS IS A GOOD MAN WHO'S ALWAYS BEEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY. FOR HIM TO HAVE USED SOME INARTFUL LANGUAGE IN TRYING TO PRAISE ME, AND FOR PEOPLE TO TRY TO MAKE HAY OUT OF THAT MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. HE APOLOGIZED, RECOGNIZING THAT HE DIDN'T USE APPROPRIATE LANGUAGE, BUT THERE WAS NOTHING MEAN-SPIRITED IN WHAT HE HAD TO SAY AND HE'S ALWAYS BEEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ISSUES. THE FACT THAT WE SPEND DAYS ON THIS INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE OR TALKING ABOUT HOW WE DEAL WITH CRITICAL ISSUES LIKE ENERGY AND HEALTH CARE IS AN INDICATION OF WHY I THINK PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WASHINGTON. I GUARANTEE YOU THE AVERAGE PERSON, WHITE OR BLACK, RIGHT NOW IS LESS CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT HARRY REID SAID IN A QUOTE IN A BOOK A COUPLE YEARS AGO THAN THEY ARE ABOUT HOW ARE WE GOING TO MOVE THE COUNTRY FORWARD. THAT'S WHERE WE NEED TO DIRECT OUR ATTENTION

A CLOSER LOOK POLITICS AND RACE
FTG FOR DEBORAH ROBERTS CS VO ON A CLOSER LOOK AT RACE AND POLITICS / THIS IS THE FIRST TIME AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN CANDIDATE, PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SENATOR BARACK OBAMA (D-ILL), HAS A REAL CHANCE OF BEING NOMINATED BY A MAJOR POLITICAL PARTY AND PERHAPS EVEN ELECTED PRESIDENT / INTV W/ SHELBY STEELE, AUTHOR OF A BOOK ON OBAMA DR. SHELBY STEELE 145 He's what I call a bargainer. Bargainers enter the mainstream by telling whites, by giving them the benefit of the doubt, by saying I won't rub the shameful history of American racism in your face if you won't hold my race against me. and Americans respond with gratitude. 218 Obama has taken bargaining into politics. he is the first one to do so and he's gotten a great response. the problem with a bargainer is that they can never tell you what they truly feel, what their deep abiding convictions are because...that xxxxxxxx that charisma, that comes to them. I think that the bargain has taken obama very far. and it may take him all the way, I don't know. but it seems to be he needs to be a lot more specific about who he is, what he mean by change, what direction he wants to take the country in, that sort of thing. It's hard to get elected without at least doing some of that 316 he's very remarkably disciplined. 410 talks about Clinton race comment ... 431 If obama talks too much about that and makes too big a deal about that than whites are going to say we liked you barack precisely because you didn't talk about that kind of thing, you didn't have a super hyper sensitivity about race and whites are going to hold it against them. // if he //doesn't protest//then blacks are going to say you're not really black, you're not loyal to your own people and to their cause. so how does he handle it, he handles it by nurturing an invisibility around those issues. 705 the irony of barack obama is that race has a great deal to do with the phenomenon that he is, the xxx of his candidacy the popularity among whites is because basically he is offering them a chance to overcome their racial past. on the other hand, one word, if he starts to talk about race, he's going to start to look like al sharpton and barack obama is popular today because he is an anti al sharpton. // if he starts to talk about race to much that would very quickly undermine his support among whites 807 he is dramatically different. // sometimes he's john f. Kennedy, sometimes he's a black militant from the 60's , sometimes he's martin Luther king. //Hillary Clinton probably does the same thing, last year trying to talk to a black audience, so they all do that. what is disturbing in the case of barack is that again, we don't really know underneath who he is, what his convictions are and what he stands for. he's a little bit of a shape shifter in that regard. 912 He represents a racial overcoming, if this black man were to become the president of this largely white nation and for the very first time America could be able to say we are not a racist society. it would be a great moral evolution for American society. hasn't found his voice 1050 he has found various voices the speeches after his Iowa victory // echoes of martin Luther king, then other times he's sort of understated like a Kennedy...I don't yet know what the authentic barack obama voice is or what it sounds like. 1145bargainers always say to white America I will not annoy you and exhaust you by rubbing in your face the American history of racism if you will not hold my race against me. if you will give me a chance.//obama's basically saying to america I'm going to bet on your better self, you are not a racist, that flatters whites. bargainer get an enormous amount of white support. oprah winfrey is the classic example. 1240 challengers on the other hand are the al sharptons of the world. challengers say we will never give you the benefit of the doubt. you are a racist until you do something to prove otherwise. 1300 barack obama is the opposite of that. he is the anti-al sharpton. he is liked precisely because he doesn't not annoy people with it's history of racism. 1410 describes why blacks like the Clintons 1530 one thing whites know about obama - he can't resume all whites are racist - b/c his mom was white 1700 question he ought to be asked - where's the rest of his family? 1844 oprah winfrey - she can in some way contribute to obama's campaign. 2110 you've got a white woman running against t a black man . she has to be very politically correct in the way as she talks about barack obama or she's going to step into that territory of racial insensitivity. he has to be careful that he doesn't seem to be above it all, otherwise he's going to start to look as a protester, look a little bit sharpton like and lose some of his support. so it's s third rail for both of them. it doesn't surprise me that they've come to a truce and agreed not to get into that directly. speech 2255 in obama's case it's pretty dramatic. what's interesting to me about it, more than the fact that he speaks in different voices is that when he's talking with black audiences he's trying to come off as a protester who is a challenger as the guy who is like sharpton, holding people's fee to the fire. then he goes back to Iowa and he's the transcendent figure, he's above race, race is irrelevant. that's dicey for him . shows the dilemma he is in 2347 on the one hand he is liked because he seems to transcend race. but in transcending race that means that his whole campaign is based on race. based on white America's longing for someone to transcend race. so in an ironic sense, race explains his popularity, the obama phenomenon even through he is a figure who attempts to be beyond race
Barack Obama talking about how race relations have gotten better within the new generation and that he has seen improvements in this area during his presidency
