MINNESOTA CURLERS CONNECTIONS ON USA CURLING TEAM (2021)
When looking at this year's roster for the men's and women's USA Olympic curling teams, Minnesota and Wisconsin connections are everywhere. They competed this weekend for their chance to represent the country next year during the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. Of the four main curlers on the men's team, three are from Minnesota. On the women's team, two are from Minnesota. "Curling is here to stay. It's really cool to have a hometown vibe with those teams," said former Olympic curler John Benton, now the director of curling for Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine. Benton played with some of the soon-to-be Olympians when he curled in the 2010 Olympics, including John Shuster. "What is the draw to curling? I think the draw to this is you look at curling as an Olympic sport, and you say, 'I can do that!' What other Olympic sport can you really do that with?" he said. Director of Men's Coaching Phill Drobnick is also from Minnesota. "It's exciting for USA Curling to be able to send two medal contenders to the Olympic games," he shared upon returning home from the trials in Omaha. Drobnick says the next couple of months will be filled with ice time and competition leading up to February. "It'll be practice, practice, practice," Drobnick said. "Really focusing on the physical side and the mental side, and really making sure they're prepared for the battle that will come at the Olympics." Athletes make it look easy with their special shoes, brooms, sweeping techniques and holding that pose. "It takes a lot of core strength: your abs, your glutes, your quads," Benton said. "There's a lot of lower body in the delivery, and there's a lot of upper body in the sweeping, so it's a really good workout." A sport with many complexities that more spectators are taking notice of. "Our top-level athletes are all about growing the sport together, and they want to share their support with everyone else across the country," Drobnick added. While Minnesota and Wisconsin are known for curling, Benton says curling clubs are popping up all over the country with interest in California, Arizona and the Carolinas.

43314 JUNE 1941 SOKOL MOVEMENT SPORTS COMPETITION SOLDIER FIELD CHICAGO
This fascinating full color, silent home movie from June, 1941 shows the American Sokol Slet, a gymnastics and sporting competition, held in Chicago including Soldier Field. The film begins with important members of the organizing committee meeting to plan the games. At 1:27, a sign announcing the games is seen at the Sokol headquarters and shortly thereafter is a title card noting that for three days competitions in diving, gymnastics, swimming and athletics were held in Douglas Park, Pilsen Park, and the Sokol Chicago gymnasium. Various sporting events are seen including track at 5:40, women and then men's gymnastics at 6:40, etc. At 18:00, a swimming and diving competition is shown with ladies posing in one-piece swimsuits, and men at 20:10. At 20:15, rehearsal is seen at Soldier Field. At 25:58, the crowded parking lot of Soldier Field is seen on the day of the big event, and a color guard is seen at 27:00 marching across the field. The flag is saluted and the competition begins, with an enormous crowd in attendance including Colonel V.S. Hurban, the Czech ambassador to the USA. The Polish ambassador is also shown at 34:00, J. Ciechanowski.

The Sokol movement (from the Slavic word for falcon) is an all-age gymnastics organization first founded in Prague in the Czech region of Austria-Hungary in 1862 by Miroslav Tyrš and Jindrich Fügner. It was based upon the principle of "a strong mind in a sound body." The Sokol, through lectures, discussions, and group outings provided what Tyrš viewed as physical, moral, and intellectual training for the nation. This training extended to men of all ages and classes, and eventually to women.

The movement also spread across all the regions populated by the Slavic culture (Poland (Sokól), Slovene Lands, Serbia (SK Soko), Bulgaria, the Russian Empire (Poland, Ukraine, Belarus), and the rest of Austria-Hungary (e.g. present day Slovenia and Croatia)). In many of these nations, the organization also served as an early precursor to the Scouting movements. Though officially an institution "above politics," the Sokol played an important part in the development of Czech nationalism, providing a forum for the spread of mass-based nationalist ideologies. The articles published in the Sokol journal, lectures held in the Sokol libraries, and theatrical performances at the massive gymnastic festivals called slets helped to craft and disseminate the Czech nationalist mythology and version of history.

The Slet are milestones in the life of the Sokol movement. They are periodic gymnastics festivals, surveys of what has been accomplished in the past working period and demonstrations of individual and collective achievement in the field of physical culture. To the Sokols, they are as significant as the Olympic games were to the ancient Hellenes. The Slets are organized on a regional, national and international scale. The most
significant and the most famous, however, are the international Sokol Slets, held every six years at Praha, Czechoslovakia (Prague, Czech Republic). The first slet was held in 1882, in
celebration of the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the Sokol organization, and was presided over and directed by Dr. Miroslav Tyrs. Every subsequent Slet reflected the amazing
growth of the movement and the spreading of the Sokol idea far beyond the national frontiers of Czechoslovakia. This constant progress is probably best documented by the growing numbers
of gymnasts participating in the various Slet events and in the growing number of countries represented. While the first Slet in 1882 was, more of less, a local affair with 720 gymnasts
taking active part, the tenth Slet, held in 1938, was a significant international affair, with more than 250,000 gymnasts participating actively in the gymnastics displays – among them Sokols
from all over the world. Transcending all man-made barriers – national, social and political – the Sokol Slets have become manifestations for international understanding and brotherhood.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! Again, I think our president is very clear, as soon as this matter came out he immediately decided to investigate, he immediately asked the Ethics Commission to enter, he immediately instructed me and others to investigate everywhere. And so there would be no point to start discussing assumptions of results or whatever as long as we don't know who did what." 8. Cutaway 9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Francois Carrard, Director-General International Olympic Committee "This was in response to certain rumours saying is the figure skating, as such, in question as a sport. Q: Will you be ready? "We are certainly ready. Up to now we have prepared ourselves very well and I think this is proven by the fact that we are now a candidate city and we will certainly work very hard because we find that now as an obligation to work very hard to convince the members of the IOC in July next year that we are very good." 14. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kim Nam-Soo, managing director of Korean 2010 Olympic bid "I am very pleased and proud of being chosen as a candidate city for the 2010 winter Olympics. We understand Pyeongchang, South Korea has the capability to host the 2010 winter olympics 15. Exterior of IOC headquarters STORYLINE: The front-running cities of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Salzburg, Austria, were among four finalists selected on Wednesday in the race for the 2010 Winter Olympics. Bern, Switzerland, and Pyeongchang, South Korea, also made the cut as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive board halved the field of eight candidates to a short list of official bidders. Eliminated from the race were Andorra La Vella, Andorra; Harbin, China; Jaca, Spain, and Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina. The 2010 winner will be selected by the full IOC assembly at its session in Prague, Czech Republic, in July, 2003. Meanwhile, the IOC confirmed that figure skating would remain in the Olympics despite the judging and fixing scandals which tainted the sport at the Salt Lake City Games. Director general Francois Carrard said the executive board declared its support for skating to dispel speculation the sport could be kicked out of the games. Also announced from the IOC's Swiss headquarters, was the decision of the executive board to recommend the expulsion of Indonesian committee member Mohamad "Bob" Hasan. Hasan, a business partner of former Indonesian strongman Suharto and an IOC member since 1994, is in an Indonesian jail serving a six-year sentence on corruption charges. The final decision to exclude Hasan must be made by the full session of the IOC, meeting in Mexico in November.
