Kik: Capeman Opens (01/30/1998)
The much anticipated and sometimes controversial musical "The Capeman" opened on Broadway last night. The show, which is the first musical by singer and songwriter Paul Simon, considers the life of a Puerto Rican immigrant who in the late 50's killed two other teenagers. At the show's opening about 60 people demonstrated against the production, while celebrities and general audiences waited in line to enter the theater. Some of the demonstrators were relatives of the murder victims, upset that their family tragedies were now componential to a main stream entertainment. The show, which received mixed reviews in previews, was attended by Jimmy Smits, Penny Marshall, Jerry Orbach, and other celebrities.
