1980s NEWS
Host Robert Lipsyte welcomes viewers and announces show topic, "Who is a Jew"? And he goes on toexplains concept of today's show... "When that question resurfaced in the mainstream media last month, it was presented as a political issue seemed rather simple. It was reported that orthodox politicians in Israel wanted to amend the law of return so that Converted Jews would be denied Israeli citizenship unless their conversion was conducted by an orthodox rabbi. Many American Jews were outraged. Most of the conversions here are conducted by reform or conservative rabbis. But there seems to be a more complicated story, not so much about the relationship between assimilated American Jews and Israeli fundamentalists, but about the uneasy relationship among American Jews. Some say the religion may be split into two separate religions. As Catholicism was once split by the Protestant Reformation."

ORTHODOX JEWS CHARGED/ REACTION (5/10/1996)
Two Orthodox Jews serving a private security patrol were arrested in Brooklyn for allegedly beating a man with their radios. They claim the mans nephew was stealing bicycles. In protest of their arrests nearly 200 angry Orthodox Jews flooded the streets and congregated at the local police station. Seven people were charged with disorderly conduct and two with rioting. Two private security guards were charged with assault and criminal weapon possession. Now the Orthodox community is claiming they have police brutality on tape, which allegedly occurred during the arrests. They claim the officers beat the perpetrators with flashlights and billy clubs.
