Woman giving birth with the aid of forceps, 1960s, USA. The woman has had an episiotomy, a surgical incision made in the perineum, the tissue between the vagina and anus, to help ease the delivery. The obstetrician inserts the forceps into the vagina around the baby's head and pulls the head free of the birth canal. He then uses a suction device to aspirate any mucus from the mouth and nostrils to keep the baby's airways clear, before delivering the baby's body. The baby is held upside down to drain any mucus away from the lungs and the suction device is used again. The baby's skin is coated in vernix caseosa. This is a white waxy substance secreted by the foetus's sebaceous glands to protect the skin from dehydration in the womb. Film published in 1963.
