The 30 year old man launched himself from the top of the waterfall, but was unable to build up sufficient lift and speed. The wing clipped the water and the adventurer was dragged with the current until reaching a small ledge midstream, 100 metres (329 feet) above ground. The temperature outside during the emergency was minus 10 degrees Celsius. The victim was winched to safety by a team from the 330 Squadron Sola Air Base, the Royal Norwegian Air Force Search and Rescue Squadron based near Stavanger. Despite being caked in ice, the man sustained only minor injuries and was taken to hospital for immediate treatment.

SOUNDBITE: (German) Roland Ampfinger, Bavarian Mountain Rescue Service: "It was a very tense night, not only for those trapped, but also for our rescue operation. We were thinking of every conceivable way to get these people out of the gondola. Our main priority was that no one would get hurt." 9. Wide of gondola 10. Wide of helicopter hovering, person being lifted into helicopter STORYLINE Emergency helicopters on Saturday rescued 20 people who had been trapped for 17 hours overnight on an Alpine cable car in southern Germany. Helicopter crews lifted the cable car operator and 19 tourists to safety from a gondola suspended 330 feet (100 metres) above the ground on Tegelberg mountain. A mountain rescue specialist had been lowered into the 130 square foot (12 square metre) gondola late on Friday to provide food and clothing for the stranded travellers, ranging in age from four to 75. Saturday's operation to bring the group back to safer ground took about two hours and more than 200 emergency personnel were on site, Bavaria's mountain rescue service said. The cable car that climbs the 6,170-foot (1,880-metre) mountain was halted on Friday after a paraglider tandem flight crashed into its cables. The collision also blocked Tegelberg's second gondola, but that gondola was halted only 230 feet (70 metrEs) above ground and its 30 passengers were roped down to safety in the evening. Emergency services also airlifted some 130 people trapped at the mountain's top back to the nearby village of Schwangau. The two paragliders involved in the accident - a 54-year-old pilot and a 35-year-old passenger - were rescued by helicopter on Friday and suffered only minor injuries. Tegelberg is within sight of one of Germany's most popular tourist attractions, Neuschwanstein Castle, which is often viewed as the inspiration for one of Walt Disney's fairy tale castles. Various of waves hitting Malecon sea wall with US Interests Section in background STORYLINE Gustav howled into Cuba's Isla de Juventud as a monstrous Category Four hurricane on Saturday while both Cubans and US citizens scrambled to flee the path of the fast-growing storm. Forecasters said it could gain yet more power, becoming a top-scale hurricane with 160 mile-per-hour (255 kilometre-per-hour) winds in the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, before weakening a little ahead of a likely collision on Monday with the US coast. Gustav rolled over the Cayman Islands on Friday with fierce winds that tore down trees and power lines. Big surging waves pounded at Grand Cayman island, but there was little flooding, and wind damage was limited due to preparation work ahead of the storm's arrival. "Well the storm, thank God it wasn't any worse. Thinking back about four years ago, when Ivan hit - this is nothing to compare with Ivan," said Eziathamae Bodden, a Georgetown resident. Across the Gulf of Mexico, Americans made wary by Hurricane Katrina streamed out of New Orleans and other coastal cities. A million people have taken to highways along the US Gulf Coast, boarding up homes and businesses and fleeing Gustav by bus and automobile as the season's most powerful Atlantic storm took aim at Louisiana. Even forecasters at the National Hurricane Centre in Miami were surprised at how quickly Gustav gained strength as it charged toward Cuba. In the Mexican touristic resort of Cancun, though, things appeared as normal and tourists were seen swimming in the sea. Gustav already has killed 81 people by triggering floods and landslides in other Caribbean nations. In Cuba officials were evacuating some 190-thousand people from low-lying parts of westernmost Cuba, Pinar del Rio province, where the tobacco for Cuba's famed cigars is grown. The state news agency reported that 50-thousand already had been evacuated farther east. Cuban state television announced that all buses and trains to and from Havana were suspended, as was ferry service to the Isla de Juventud, the outlying Cuban island next in Gustav's path. Residents evacuated out of the town of Surgidero de Batabano, south of the capital and approximately 5-thousand people strong. The town is also 50 centimetres (19.6 inches) above the sea level and one of the first to flood anytime a storm hits the area. Stiff winds whipped intermittent rains across Havana, where police officers in blue and orange rain coats supervised workers removing stones, tree branches and other debris from the storied beachfront. Angry waves crashed against the sea wall below. Authorities announced they were prepared to "protect" the 20-thousand tourists in Matanzas province, which includes the famous beach resort of Varadero.
