87584 STEEL IS A FARMER 1960s AMERICAN IRON & STEEL INSTITUTE PROMOTIONAL FILM
This color film “Steel Is A Farmer” was produced for the American Iron and Steel Institute sometime in the 1960s. It opens with a farmer on a tractor (:27). The importance of this profession is measured in crops to feed people (:52) and produce clothing, represented as men’s suits and ties (1:00), on clothing racks (1:06), and on mannequins of women wearing dresses with Peter Pan collars and a head scarf (1:11) and paisley prints (1:18). A Massey Ferguson tractor pulls a plow (1:50) and a Massey Ferguson combine thrashes a field (1:58). Other farming steel equipment is shown (2:19), including a disc (2:44) and fertilizer equipment (3:02). A crop duster airplane is also used (3:33). Sweet and field corn is harvested by machinery (3:49-4:20). A Massey Ferguson 510 combine is shown in action (4:22), as is a peanut harvester (4:40), a broccoli harvester (4:42), and a potato harvester (4:50). Farms also use steel arch buildings (5:05) and grain elevators (5:28). Steel machinery can automatically mix the perfect blends of feed (5:29-6:22). Dairy farms use steel feed storage structures into which a machine blows in grain (6:31) and milking parlors use stainless steel and glass to prevent contamination until it can be transported (6:49-7:26). Swine raising also uses feed stored in steel structures that is then distributed to the hogs via machinery (7:34-9:50). A woman uses a keypunch machine and computer punch cards to program their growth and health statistics (9:52-10:32). Poultry also uses steel automation to feed the hens (10:38). Once a human verifies the non-viability of an egg using candling equipment (10:54), automated machine takes over again (10:55-11:20). Sheep wool is analyzed in a laboratory for strength (11:29-11:47). Cotton is harvested using steel equipment (11:52). Farms also use galvanized steel sheets (12:16), stainless steel (12:24), steel tubing (12:26), and steel fences (12:30). A person in protective gear performs steel research tests (12:57). Scientists can vaporize steel to produce pure metals (13:05-13:22). They can torture test steel (13:25) using laser beams to heat the steel (13:28) and listen to it under pressure (13:34), while a moving pen records the results (13:39). Rolling mills produce small samples of new experimental steels which are put through miniatures presses and cold worked, heat treated, quenched, pulled apart, broken, and dissolved (13:40-14:04). An Oliver 1850 tractor (14:12) plows. New machinery is tested in lettuce fields (14:29). Tomato fields have been genetically modified to work with machines. (15:23-15:59). A steel conveyer moves hay into the loft of a barn (16:08). An experimental machine chops and compresses hay into cubes (16:22). Another is a steel tree shaker that lives up to its name (16:35). Solar energy is combined with a double layer of steel on a hog building (17:22-17:59). A Farmall 140 tractor (18:21) pulls a John Deere spreader (19:00). Frozen vegetables are packed and canned (19:15). The American Iron and Steel Institute (represented by factories at 20:24) is proud to support farmers.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment!
