Piglets trained to run and play football took part in the annual Russian Open Championship, held during the 'Zoo Russia 2006' exhibition near Moscow. Numerous spectators witnessed little two-month-old squealing piglets from Russia, Senegal and other countries competing in the Pig Olympic finals. To adhere to the games' policy, all piglets had to pass a dope test and were thoroughly checked by veterinarians before the championships. The main event was a short-distance running race. As piglets are not natural athletes, their coaches had to run behind them to keep them on track, clapping their hands and stamping their feet in an effort to make the piglets run faster during the race. Each year since its inception in 2004, the annual pig championship has attracted more and more spectators and fans, who really love the show. Cheered on by dozens of spectators, the winning piglets were awarded golden cups for their efforts and given a trough of mashed carrots. The organisers of the event said they hope to introduce pig-boxing or pig fighting into next year's games.
