Orbital ring, animation
Animation of an orbital ring around the Earth. This is a structure that completely encircles the entire planet in a closed loop, composed of inner and outer loops. They can surround the Earth (or any other planetary body) at any height and inclination. The inner segment moves slightly faster than orbital speed, so that it remains taught and balanced against gravity. The outer (visible) portion is suspended above or around the inner one using electromagnetic levitation. A person standing on the structure would experience almost as much weight as on the surface of the planet, as they are not in orbit/freefall (only the inner segments are). Structures could be built upon these rings, such as factories. They could also be used as launch platforms for space-bound vehicles, or be connected to the ground via cables that elevators could climb.

HOW THE EARTH WAS BORN
Titles read: "How the Earth was born. Throughout the ages, Man has tried to visualize the creation of the world. One of the theories of today is the "Tidal Theory" - so let us see what took place (according to modern science) on our planet in the dawn of the universe - ".

Various diagrams and pictures accompany this educational (American) commentary, explaining the Tidal Theory of how the earth and other planets in our solar system were created. The general gist of it is that a star passing close to the sun caused immense tidal agitation which led to the formation of the planets.

Pointer Sisters At Planet Hollywood (03/28/1996)
The Pointer Sisters brought the big band music of Fats Waller to the Majestic Theater Wednesday evening. The hit trio showed up at Planet Hollywood to present the restaurant with a gold record--and to invite the public to come see the Tony Award-winning musical "Ain't Misbehavin'."
Birth of a quasar
Animation depicting the birth of a quasar, seen from a distant planetary system. A quasar is a type of highly energetic active galactic nucleus (AGN), and they are the most luminous objects known. Their active nuclei are thought to be powered by matter in an accretion disc around a supermassive black hole at the galaxy's centre. The gravitational force accelerates the infalling matter, causing it to emit radiation. The process can switch on and off depending on the availability of matter near the black hole. Quasars and other AGNs often show bipolar jets, streams of matter and energy directed away from the black hole's poles. One such jet is directed straight at the planet here.
