STORY: SANTANA
LOCATION: LONDON
DATE: JAN 26TH 2000
Until the release of his new album SUPERNATURAL and the single, SMOOTH , six months ago, it had been a quiet decade for CARLOS SANTANA and his band a quiet two decades in fact, since they last enjoyed a top ten hit. But the fiftysomething Mexicanborn rocker has completely dominated the US charts since June. Smooth has been bedded in at number one in the Singles Chart for over four months making it by far and away the biggest single of the year and Supernatural has hovered in the top five of the Billboard Album chart since it came out, with six million copies already sold. Not bad for a musician who first came into the wider public eye in 1969 at Woodstock.
Thirty years later, Carlos Santana and Supernatural have been nominated for eleven Grammys in ten categories including Record of the Year for "Smooth" and Album of the Year for "Supernatural."
The winners will be announced during the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards telecast at the end of February. APTN caught up with Santana in London. Although Mike Tyson was rumoured to attend, the celebrity contigent wasa restricted to Melanie Blatt from girl band ALL SAINTS, IAN BROWN from THE STONE ROSES and KATE MOSS.
Santana was helped on Supernatural by a long list of friends. Among those contributing were: LAURYN HILL, ERIC CLAPTON, DAVE MATTHEWS, EVERLAST, WYCLEF JEAN, EAGLE EYE CHERRY, MANA, KC PORTER and THE DUST BROTHERS. Smooth features ROB THOMAS OF MATCHBOX 20.
Long before anyone heard of, "World Music," Carlos Santana was playing it. Skillfully blending elements of 12bar blues, fiery rock riffs and sensuous AfroCuban rhythms, and featuring his passionate, unforgettable guitar style, Carlos Santana created a unique, magical sound. It is a sound that earned Carlos many awards, including his 1998 induction (along with the Santana Band) into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.
The original lineup of Santana consisted of GREGG ROLIE, MICHAEL SHRIEVE, DAVID BROWN, MARCUS MALONE and MIKE CARABELLO. Later important members were JOS? CHEPITO AREAS, NEAL SCHON, TOM COSTER, ARMANDO PERAZA, RAUL REKOW, GRAHAM LEAR, ORESTES VILATO and COKE ESCOVEDO.
The first three Santana albums, released in 1969, 1970 and 1971 respectively were and still are outstanding examples of the AfroLatin genre. SANTANA, ABRAXAS and SANTANA III spent months high in the US charts, the latter two staying at number 1 for many weeks. These albums included numerous memorable tracks including 'JINGO', TITO PUENTE 'S 'OYE COMO VA', a definitive version of PETER GREEN 'S 'BLACK MAGIC WOMAN' and one of the most sensual rock instrumental of all time, 'SAMBA PA TI'. CARAVANSERAI (1972) marked a change of style as Rolie and Schon departed to form Journey. This album, almost a single suite, showed a move towards jazz in the mode of Miles Davis 's In A Silent Way.
Carlos Santana's story begins in the village of Autlan, Mexico, where, at age five, Carlos was introduced to "traditional music" by his father, Jose. An accomplished mariachi violinist and experienced musician, he taught Carlos the basics of music theory and gave him an understanding of the value of a note.
The family moved to the boom town of Tijuana in 1955. Eightyearold Carlos picked up the guitar, studying and emulating the sounds of B.B. King, TBone Walker and John Lee Hooker. Soon he was playing with local bands like the "T.J.'s," where he added his own unique touch and feel to the popular songs of 50's rock 'n roll. As he continued to play with different bands along the busy "Tijuana Strip," he started to perfect his style and sound.
In 1960, Carlos' family moved to San Francisco while he stayed in Tijuana to hone his musical skills in local clubs. When he moved north to join his family a year later, he immersed himself in the colorful atmosphere of San Francisco, with its diverse cultural influences and musical styles.
In 1966, that music exploded on the streets of San Francisco with the debut performance of the Santana Blues Band. For the next two years, the group was caught up in a wave of popularity that took them from the stage of San Francisco's Fillmore West to their historic appearance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. With that electrifying performance, Carlos Santana had arrived; and with him came both a powerful new Latinflavored rock sound and an uncompromising dedication to his music.
Fans also loved his messages, the gentle urgings toward peace, compassion, joy and understanding, that have been consistently delivered in a personal, heartfelt manner at performances in more than 50 countries. And, they loved his guitar playing which today remains among the most distinctive in all the world.
More recent work includes the boxedset retrospective, "DANCE OF THE RAINBOW SERPENT" released in 1995, the highlypersonal "BLUES FOR SALVADOR", a featured performance on John Lee Hooker's album, "CHILL OUT", the 1996 "MYSTIC MAN" by Italian composer Paolo Rustichelli, a 1988 video retrospective, "VIVA SANTANA!", the band's 1993 South American concert video, "SACRED FIRE", the 1997 release of "A HISTORY OF SANTANA: THE RIVER OF COLOR AND SOUND" CDROM and "SANTANA: LIVE AT THE FILLMORE", a double CD that features tracks recorded at the group's 1968 performances at the legendary San Francisco club.
Carlos has been voted the best poprock guitarist several times in the Playboy Magazine's annual readers' poll and, in 1977, the Santana Band was the first to earn the CBS Records Crystal Globe Award for selling 5 million albums or more internationally. He received a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1988 and was the subject of a special tribute concert by N.A.R.A.S. during the Grammy Awards celebration in 1996, in conjunction with his induction into the Hollywood Rock Walk. In 1996, Carlos received the Billboard Century Award, Billboard Magazine's highest honor for creative achievement, and he was named the Latino Music Legend of the Year by the Chicano Music Awards in 1997.
