SOT Lucien King (Guest Curator) - "One can look back over forty years and start to see some patterns, it's quite a long time even though luckily everybody's still alive, so we spend a lot of time talking to as many people as possible over the last four years; and that's literally thousands of people and the documents started like this size (hand gestures), as an open standards approach, it grew to this sort of size (hand gestures) and we looked at the space; the concepts of how to break it down remain pretty much the same, but how we filled in as much representative input from as many people as possible was what we tried to get right for this particular venue and it'll tour like this and develop as it goes round." 5. G.V. Old Computer. 6. G.V. Pokemon machine. 7. SOT Lucien King - on start of arcades - "The summary of it is, he put Pong, which was his, Noland Bushnall, put Pong, his refined version, the classic tennis for two which you all remember as iconic, into a bar called 'Andy Naps' I think it is, in California, and left it there. He got a call, or one of the technicians, later that evening saying one of the machines stopped working, you know come and fix it, etcetera etcetera; they went down there and the only problem was that the place you put your quarters was absolutely jammed full of coins, so you couldn't get any more in. That was the first public reaction to arcades, and you know it grew from there." 8. G.V. Pong game. 9. G.V. Pac-Man machine. 10. Clip: Tomb Raider. 11. SOT Lucien King - on Tomb Raider - "Tomb Raider was a very successful game; it sold about 30 or 40 million units to date. It's a game which you know people, you either like it or you don't like it, and we've presented it here as one of the games which like Pacman, Mario and Sonic brought a new character to the world, and Lara Croft has been someone now who has gone on, as you say, to take the form of comic books, tea cosies, cartoons and a big movie; you'd probably be better to ask someone from Core to give you the official line. I think people going and watching the movie and saying, oh that's a terrible thing, it's just a licensing thing and it's a money thing probably are forgetting how they felt when they went to see Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom or something, where it was kind of a no account movie, it was good, it was fun, it was real, there you all go and you're hanging out with your buddies again." 12. G.V. Tomb Raider posters. 13. SOT Lucien King - "They're what they are, and there's a lot of artistic things about them, a lot of artistic people involved with them, but what does it add to video games to recognise them as art? That would be my view. So, they've had a huge impact outside of video games; in cinema, in music videos, in architecture, in fashion, in graffiti, in lots of different areas of creative expression, and that's the measure of their influence and I don't know how important it is to say that they are, or aren't, art themselves." 14. G.V. Two people playing table videogame. 15. G.V. Space Invaders. 16. SOT Lucien King - on success of videogames - "I think there'll be very few people on the planet, who don't know, something of a video game or a videogame character or a towel in their wardrobe which they didn't know was related to a videogame but had pokemon on it in Venezuela, I don't know. But they've had a long impact and a big impact for a lot of people but they are just games, you know, and you make of them what you will. You can take them as seriously as you want to." 17. GAME ON 'Game on' is the latest exhibition to feature at London's Barbican Art Gallery, but arts lovers maybe surprised to find it's videogames and not traditional works of art on display there. Spanning 40 years, the exhibition explores the culture, history and future of videogames. As well as featuring arcade, console and hand held games, the exhibits also highlight the creative people involved from the designers and artists through to musicians and programmers. The oldest electronic game in the exhibition 'Spacewar' dates all the way back to 1962, eleven years before the first commercially available game 'Computer Space' , was produced by Nolan Bushnell. Bushnell went on to found Atari in 1972, the classic computer game creators, responsible for what most people remember as the first arcade game, the tennis challenge, 'Pong'. 'Game On' also contains sections dedicated to specific classic games such as the controversial 'Grand Theft Auto' which started in the mid 1990s on the PC and then PlayStation, role playing favourite 'Final Fantasy' which is currently in its 11th version and 'Tomb Raider' with the sexy animation, Lara Croft, which has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide. Other sections on display include the history of kids games, Japanese games culture and the future trends in gaming technology. The exhibition runs until 15th September 2002.
