Various of people waiting in queue inside STORYLINE: A huge lottery jackpot in the U-S has got Americans in the grip of Powerball fever. The jackpot for Saturday night's draw in this popular lottery is a massive 295 (m) million (U-S) dollars, the second highest in Powerball history and the third largest lottery jackpot ever in the United States. Near-record numbers of people were lured by the chance to win a fortune beyond their wildest dreams, for an outlay of just one dollar per ticket. The numbers were drawn on Saturday night in Des Moines, Iowa, the host of the Powerball lottery that is played in 21 states and the District of Columbia. The winning Powerball numbers were 8-17-22-42-47 and Powerball 21. Powerball officials didn't immediately announce whether any winning tickets were sold. The odds of winning are one in 80 (m) million, but lottery players were not deterred, and many people travelled hundreds of kilometres (miles) to cross into a Powerball playing state to buy tickets for the big draw. The biggest Powerball jackpot ever was the 295.7 (m) million U-S dollars won in 1998 by a group of factory workers in Ohio. The richest lottery prize in U-S history was the 363 (m) million U-S dollars Big Game jackpot, won in May last year by two players in Illinois and Michigan.

Various of tickets printing 18. Store clerk handing ticket to customer STORYLINE Powerball officials in the United States said the one winning ticket sold for Saturday's 314 (M) million US dollars jackpot was purchased in Indiana. The jackpot was huge because there had not been a big winner in any of the drawings since late June. The game is played in 29 states as well as Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands. In Wisconsin and Connecticut, scores of people had lined up to buy last-minute tickets during the day. "It's just funny to watch all the people buy Powerballs that don't normally buy them," said one shop clerk who was kept busy selling tickets. Saturday night's six Powerball numbers were: two, eight, 23, 29 and 35, with a Powerball of 19. The jackpot for the next draw, on Wednesday, is to start over at a mere 15 (M) million dollars. But Americans wanting a bigger gamble, the Mega Millions jackpot has reached at least 200 (m) million for Friday's drawing. Mega Millions is played in 12 states and hasn't had a top winner since 6 July.

US Xmas Lottery - Christmas lottery grips Americans

People waiting in line to buy tickets 3. Attendant taking money and giving out tickets 4. Man buying tickets 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Vox pop: "Oh, I think my chances are pretty good, being Christmas and all. When the price gets up there, somebody has to win so why not play?" 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Vox pop: "I heard that the Lotto powerball is up to 300 million, so I think I'll take a chance." 7. More people buying tickets STORYLINE: With an estimated value of 280 (m) million US dollars, America's Powerball lottery jackpot - the fifth largest lottery payoff in the world - was attracting plenty of attention as a last-minute gift ahead of the Christmas night draw. Customers jammed stores on Tuesday in the 23 states where Powerball is played. Officials say the Iowa-based Multistate Lottery is in uncharted territory because the draw is being held on Christmas Day, when stores are often closed. People were queuing outside stores at 7:30 in the morning. In some parts of the country, Powerball sales were about double compared to normal, and many customers were buying five, or 10 tickets at a time. The odds of winning the grand prize are one in 120 (m) million. Wednesday's draw is the third largest since the Powerball game started. The largest Powerball jackpot was 297.5 (m) million US dollars on July 29, 1998. Last summer it reached 295 (m) million. If the prize goes unclaimed on Wednesday, the jackpot would reach record levels.
