STORYLINE:
A huge lottery jackpot in the U-S has got Americans in the grip of Powerball fever.
The jackpot for Saturday night's draw in this popular lottery is a massive 295 (m) million (U-S) dollars, the second highest in Powerball history and the third largest lottery jackpot ever in the United States.
Near-record numbers of people were lured by the chance to win a fortune beyond their wildest dreams, for an outlay of just one dollar per ticket.
The numbers were drawn on Saturday night in Des Moines, Iowa, the host of the Powerball lottery that is played in 21 states and the District of Columbia.
The winning Powerball numbers were 8-17-22-42-47 and Powerball 21.
Powerball officials didn't immediately announce whether any winning tickets were sold.
The odds of winning are one in 80 (m) million, but lottery players were not deterred, and many people travelled hundreds of kilometres (miles) to cross into a Powerball playing state to buy tickets for the big draw.
The biggest Powerball jackpot ever was the 295.7 (m) million U-S dollars won in 1998 by a group of factory workers in Ohio.
The richest lottery prize in U-S history was the 363 (m) million U-S dollars Big Game jackpot, won in May last year by two players in Illinois and Michigan.
