Rappelling from the top floor of the building, members of the group unfurled a huge banner condemning Monsanto, a multinational company, for what they called "environmental destruction". According to the protesters, Monsanto could unleash environmental havoc in Southeast Asia with the local distribution of the BT Corn, the first genetically engineered crop commercially released in the Philippines. Monsanto's office in the Philippines refused to comment on the allegations. The Greenpeace protest took place as the World Trade Organisation, or WTO, met in Cancun, Mexico.
Greenpeace activists hold protest during Annual Davos summit
DAVOS, SWITZERLAND - JAN. 21, 2025: Members of Environmentalist NGOs Greenpeace held a protest on Tuesday, Jan. 21, during the five-day annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Switzerland, also known as the Davos summit. They displayed a banner reading, "Tax The Super Rich! Fund A Just & Green Future ," calling for wealth redistribution to support environmental and social justice initiatives. Over 200 sessions at the high-profile gathering of political and business leaders will concentrate on ways to boost social and economic resilience, use new technology, and restore prosperity. In the sessions, speakers will share their assessments of the policies of the US’ incoming Trump administration – also set to start Monday – fragmentation resulting from the gradual weakening of global cooperation, trade policies, artificial intelligence and digitization, clean energy transformation, combating climate change, central banks’ monetary policies, and interest rates and inflation. Among these sessions, one will particularly focus on the current state of European economies and how to boost economic growth without additional taxes and debt. The summit is expected to be attended by 60 heads of state and 1,600 representatives from the global business world, including 900 senior executives.(Footage by Omer Sercan Karkus/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)

Greenpeace activists on roof STORYLINE: Supporters of environmental group Greenpeace blockaded the British headquarters of gas company Esso and some of its gas stations on Monday to protest what they claimed was the company's support for a possible U.S.-led war on Iraq. Up to 1,000 staff at the company's headquarters at Leatherhead, south of London, were sent home for their own safety, a company spokesman said. Greenpeace said more than 300 activists closed over 100 gas stations in England and Wales, but there was no independent verification of this figure. The Esso spokesman said that by 9 a.m. (0900 GMT), protesters had visited some 50 of its 1,300 gas stations in Britain. Greenpeace accuses Esso and its parent company, the Texas-based Exxon Mobil Corp., of supporting the war and committing crimes against the environment. "The action comes in response to Esso's ongoing campaign to keep the U.S. hooked on oil, fueling war and causing global warming," said spokesman Ben Stewart. The Esso spokesman said protesters "have every right to express their views but it is ludicrous to suggest that Exxon Mobil is in any way encouraging a potential war in Iraq. Protesters, some dressed as Esso's tiger mascot, shut down power to some Esso petrol pumps and locked delivery nozzles together to prevent them being used. Greenpeace said some 30 activists had been arrested.
