China Torch 2 - Olympic torch relay travels through Haikou, Hainan

Runner in relay STORYLINE: The Olympic torch arrived in the city of Haikou in China's Hainan Province on Tuesday. China's national television station CCTV showed footage of cheering crowds waving flags as the torch continued on its way on what is expected to be a peaceful three-month journey to Beijing. The torch ended its first day on the Chinese mainland on Sunday evening with a ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame on stage by film star Jackie Chan and dance performances. The journey has been troubled by protests and distractions, but Chinese authorities are confident that the remaining three months before the Games open in August would be trouble free. Chinese citizens appeared to be very positive about the games and the torch relay has inflamed intense feelings of patriotism in many. Many felt that the disruptions along the torch route were an unexpected insult to the nation that is hosting the games. China, which is making the transition from a developing nation into an economic powerhouse, had hoped to use the international Olympic torch relay as a chance to promote its status as an emerging superpower and international player. But the relay was dogged by protests in London, Paris and other cities where demonstrators voiced their disapproval at Beijing's clampdown on a broad uprising among Tibetans against Chinese rule. The torch's three-month run across mainland China was likely to be less troubled than elsewhere, although disruptions could occur during the relay in Tibet or the western region of Xinjiang. After three days on Hainan island, the torch moves to Guangdong province in southern China, where millions of migrant workers labour in what has become the world's factory floor, making everything from Honda cars to Nike sneakers.

And we’re like, yeah, will do whatever you want, so he fully embraced everything about this script and also was just a complete consummate professional , while doing it, voracious. A21. South Korea: Firebombs: new police unit trained to counter firebombs
TAPE_NUMBER: EF01/0262 IN_TIME: 00:11:24 LENGTH: 02:41 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: FEED: LC SCRIPT: Korean/Nat xfa It was supposed to be a mock clash, but the gasoline bombs were all too real. At a police drill ground in Seoul, riot officers playing the role of protesters hurled about 100 firebombs at rows of colleagues, who dodged the missiles or batted them away with shields. Nobody got hurt in the drill Friday, but the exercise was an ominous signal that - after a long hiatus - Molotov cocktails have made a comeback at protests in South Korea. A feature of protests against military-backed rule in the 1980s, firebombs became a frequent sight at demonstrations in the past several weeks against layoffs at Daewoo Motor Co., South Korea's third-largest carmaker. Although most rallies are peaceful, the National Police Agency is so worried about the phenomenon that it launched a new unit trained to counter the firebombs, and invited journalists along to see it practise. Smaller units were launched in provincial cities as well. "Firebombs are back!" Seoul police chief Lee Pal-ho told 1,720 policemen in helmets, padded vests and white sneakers. "We expect that students and workers will join forces and protests will become more violent in the coming months." Police say activists threw 830 firebombs in six demonstrations so far this year, even before the traditional spring protest season. In 2000, 750 firebombs were tossed in seven protests. The return of firebombs is associated with rising frustration over President Kim Dae-jung's efforts to overhaul the economy in the wake of the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis. His fitful program of reforms has led to layoffs and painful corporate restructuring. Firebombs had largely disappeared from the scene after Kim, a former opposition leader who once enjoyed wide popularity among student activists and workers, became president in early 1998. Protests grew so tame that police even suspended the use of one of their favorite riot props, tear gas, later that year. At the riot drill Friday, police deflected firebombs before charging their adversaries through clouds of smoke and pools of flame, grabbing and dragging away mock protesters. "We must exterminate firebombs. We must arrest those who throw firebombs at the scene," Lee said. He handed out envelopes of cash as a reward to his company commanders for their successful handling of the mock riot. A gasoline bomb usually consists of a rag stuffed in the neck of a glass bottle. The rag is set ablaze, and the hurled bottle explodes on impact. At some recent protests against layoffs, the use of firebombs seemed heavily ritualized. Applauded by comrades, protesters arrived with crates of the missiles. Then they lit them and marched in files to the front of the crowd to fling them at police. "Firebombs are our means of making our voices heard and securing a place for our demonstrations," said Park Sung-bae, spokesman of the Daewoo Motor union. SOUNDBITE: (Korea) "We must exterminate firebombs and violent protest. As the selected ones from various riot police units, you must arrest those who throw firebombs at the scene despite any hardships. ANTI - GUN PROTEST (05/03/1998)
In lieu of the argument between Barbara Streisand and Charleton Heston, this story has a bit more significance. Heston is taking shots at Streisand's new TV movie about a 1993 shooting that left six people dead, which airs tonight. Streisand is producing "The Long Island Incident," which will be shown on NBC tonight. She says Heston hasn't even seen it. Heston says the movie misrepresents the National Rifle Association. The actor is an NRA vice president. He's to hold a news conference tomorrow. Meanwhile, more than 5 thousand American children die from gunshot wounds each year. And Saturday, several hundred protesters journeyed to Springfield, Massachusetts from as far away as New York and Pennsylvania. They were marching on the gun manufacturer, Smith and Wesson. The whole affair was part of a nationwide anti-gun protest yesterday and Audrey Laganas has the Springfield perspective. (TAKE PKG)

Dancer jumping to pose in front of Olympic flame brazier as music ends amid jets of smoke on stage JACKIE CHAN ENDS TORCH'S FIRST DAY OF RELAY ON MAINLAND The Olympic torch ended its first day on the Chinese mainland on Sunday evening with a ceremonial lighting of the Olympic flame on stage by film star Jackie Chan and dance performances. Jogging slowly through heavy security and press, Chan ran the last section of the day's torch relay, accompanied by a local town official. The torch bearers jointly lit the large brazier before the torch was extinguished. "I am very, very moved. Very, very happy. I hope that as we have lit this sacred flame, we can send this compassion, peace and love to the entire world," Chan told the enthusiastic audience. Earlier on Sunday, the Olympic torch relay started its mainland leg in Sanya city, on the tropical island of Hainan, the first stop in what is expected to be a peaceful three-month journey to Beijing. China, which is transitioning from a developing nation into an economic powerhouse had hoped to use the international Olympic torch relay as a chance to promote it's status as an emerging superpower and international player.

Various of riot police and vans in street STORYLINE: Thousands of extra police officers flooded the streets of London on Wednesday to deter rioters after Prime Minister David Cameron warned that the government would take any necessary action to restore order and confidence to Britain's streets. An eerie calm prevailed over most of the city as night fell, although in the south London neighbourhood of Eltham, the Metropolitan Police said some objects had been thrown at officers. But the Met said the incident had been "dealt with" and that a group had been dispersed - leaving a highly-visible police presence on Eltham's streets. Earlier in the day, Cameron promised not to let a "culture of fear" take hold and recalled Parliament from its summer recess for an emergency debate on the riots on Thursday. Scenes of ransacked stores, torched cars and blackened buildings have frightened and outraged Britons just a year before their country is to host next summer's Olympic Games, bringing demands for a tougher response from law enforcement. Police across the country have made almost 1,200 arrests since the violence broke out in the capital on Saturday. The number of arrests in London alone has climbed to 805, with courts staffing around the clock to process alleged looters, vandals and thieves - including one as young as 11. The surge in police numbers came on Tuesday, as armoured vehicles and convoys of police vans backed up some 16,000 officers on duty - almost triple the number who were out on Monday night. The show of force seems to have worked - there were no reports of major trouble in London on Tuesday night, although there were scores of arrests. England's riots began on Saturday when an initially peaceful protest over a police shooting in London's Tottenham neighbourhood turned violent. That clash has morphed into a general lawlessness in London and several other cities that police have struggled to halt. While the rioters have run off with goods many teens want - new sneakers, bikes, electronics and leather goods - they also have torched stores apparently just to see something burn. They were left virtually unchallenged in several neighbourhoods, and when police did arrive they often were able to flee quickly and regroup. Now, after 100 years China is finally standing up and this has made many people uncomfortable. So now we all have to work even harder to make our country stronger. In this way we can give the 'noise' of the rest of the world an appropriate response." 17. Wide of remote controlled dragon blimp flying with Beijing Olympic sign and flags STORYLINE Sweating, cheering people stood on their chairs and waved flags as the Olympic torch relay finally started its mainland leg on Sunday on the tropical island of Hainan, the first stop in what is expected to be a peaceful three-month journey to Beijing. Protests followed the torch overseas, but organisers and ordinary Chinese in the seaside resort of Sanya promised a trouble-free national tour that will wind through every Chinese province and region before arriving in Beijing before the Olympics start on August 8. Some Chinese, including the torch bearers, seemed to be relieved that the torch was safely home. "This has really been hard, China has not had it easy," said Zhang Chaoyang, the CEO of major Internet portal Sohu.com, during a news conference after the relay started. He criticised the Western media's recent coverage of China and of the international leg of the relay, which was marked by protests against China's policies and its treatment of Tibetans. A man watching the torch relay said now that the torch was in China it was guaranteed a smooth trip. "Here there could not be any of the kinds of disturbances like we saw happening outside China. Now it is inside China, the Chinese government and the Chinese people won't let that kind of thing happen here," said Li Binfeng, from Guilin in Guangxi Province. The Olympic flame went out briefly at the beginning of the ceremony as it was being passed among local leaders on stage and given to the first runner, former Olympic speedskating gold medallist Yang Yang. A member of the team of paramilitary police that has followed the torch around the world quickly relit the flame. The torch seemed to go out again several minutes later with another runner, but it was quickly exchanged. Basketball star Yi Jianlian was one of the first torch bearers, and actor Jackie Chan was set to be one of the day's last. Overall, 208 people would carry the torch Sunday along palm tree-lined roads looking out over the South China Sea. At the lighting ceremony, echoes of China's recent troubles were almost absent. A few people wore T-shirts with slogans saying Tibet was and will always be a part of China. After three days on Hainan island, the torch moves to Guangdong province in southern China, where millions of migrant workers labour in what has become the world's factory floor, making everything from Honda cars to Nike sneakers.
