National Sobriety Checkpoint Week VNR (07/02/1996)
This week (National Sobriety Checdkpoint Week July 1-7), Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), drunk driving victims and police agencies launch a nationwide sobriety checkpoint blitz...Increased use of checkpoints to prevent deaths and injuries over the July 4th holiday weekend. The July 4th holiday was the deadliest road travel holiday in both 1994 and 1995. The National Safety Council predicts that 653 Americans are likelt to die on the nation's highways over the Independence Day Holiday period...making it possibly the deadliest road travel holiday weekend this year. The Ameerican Automobile Association expects the heaviest road travel Fourth of July holiday in nearly a decade. While alchohol related traffic deaths have been cut by 40 percent since MADD was founded in 1980, MADD will release new statistics that show that drunk driving rose in 1995 for the first time in a decade. Drunk Driving is the most frequently committed violent crime in the United States and sobriety checkpoints are one of the most effective weapons in the war on drunk driving. The National Sobriety Checkpoint Week campaign will emphasize the effectiveness of checkpoints and will recommend safety precautions motorists should take to prevent impaired driving.
