Sidewinder snake (Crotalus cerastes) moving across desert sand. It is named for its unusual method of locomotion, which gives it traction on the sand. The sidewinder is a type of rattlesnake, and hunts lizards and deserts rodents which it kills with its venomous bite. Although its venom is weaker than other related snakes, it is still potent, and a bite can be fatal to humans. The sidewinder can reach a length of up to 80 centimetres.
