WORLD CUP REFEREES HELP OFFICIATE USA CUP (2015)
It's been an especially exciting year for the 31st Schwan's USA Cup in Blaine for a number of reasons. This year, a record 1,153 teams are participating in the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. A handful of coaches and parents have also played in the tournament years ago, making their children 2nd generation players. Grabbing the most attention, however, is a duo of Chinese referees that are fresh off of officiating in the Women's World Cup.It now takes 550 referees from 16 different countries to run the USA Cup, but Barclay Kruse, the Media Director, said Fang Yan and Qin Liang are the talk of the tourney."Players want to take pictures with them," said Kruse. "They're a different kind of celebrity."Players like Hannah Quick, of the TwinStars Academy in Coon Rapids, are eagerly hoping to play in a game officiated by them."I though tit was amazing," said Quick. "I wish they could ref our games, that would be crazy."Liang says officiating in the World Cup is the highest honor, but youth tournaments certainly have their perks."I think the players, the coaches, and the parents are more relaxed," said Liang. "More enjoyable."Yan said she doesn't approach the two any differently."Every match you must do like the World Cup level," said Yan. "You can improve, it's very important."The Schwan's USA Cup wraps up Saturday.
